Abstract: The paper is an attempt to understand the basics of the information society and their application to enhance the library profession. For convenience, the paper has been divided into two parts; the part one discusses the basic features of the networked society. This society has influenced our life in many ways. Starting from personal life to business establishment and the government organizations, in the recent years, Information communication technology (ICTs) is of great help. The part two, however, discusses their application to upgrade the library profession, which could possibly change our orientation towards the profession and also to a large extent help the users. The application of ICTs in the libraries, in my opinion, will not only help in shedding the traditional mind-set, but also help to reduce the gap between nations. Use of Internet, online sources, and several such trends would help to overcome the digital divide and bring the knowledge to our doors. The part two discusses all these concepts and their possible application in our libraries and knowledge centres. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1334 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: History has proved that education and discovery are best advanced when knowledge is shared openly. Open Courseware (OCW) is a part of a comparatively new educational movement in the line of Open access and also an opportunity in the field of distance/elearning that leading institutions and universities around the world can capitalize for the betterment of the society. Great Universities and institutions constantly expand their reach, working across traditional boundaries to grasp and meet the global community’s most critical needs. Already world famous institutes like Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), all Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) are working along this way that will automatically inspire other institutions to openly share their course materials for open dissemination of knowledge and information that can open new doors to the benefits of education for humanity around the world. India is a vast country with different culture and languages. In this paper we studied different aspects of OCW and its impact on total learning process. Abstract: While digital technologies are enabling information to be created, manipulated, disseminated, located, and stored with increasing ease, preserving access to this information poses a significant challenge. Digital preservation involves the use of well-defined techniques to prevent the original artifact from deteriorating further and to perhaps even improve it to the point where it can be used again. It involves quite different methods, skills, and outcomes and can complement traditional preservation services, while simultaneously providing unique and dynamic new uses of information. Abstract: Web cataloguing’ or ‘metadata creation’ is an effective strategy to enhance the resource- discovery on digital collection that can be accomplished by standard metadata schema. Technological capabilities now allow multiple metadata schemas for discovering web resources. This paper aims to present the progress of web-cataloguing using ‘metadata’ and its impact on precision of search results, in discovering web resources. It also proposes various means of creating metadata in order to pursue with the large databases and/or dynamic web pages. Several metadata initiatives provide glimpses of recent activities on ‘metadata’. Here, an attempt has been made to discuss about different metadata schemas of which Dublin Core (DC) & MAachine Readable Cataloguing (MARC) seem to be widely accepted and used in cataloguing web resources. It also seems imperative to make a few modifications of the existing crosswalk between the DC & MARC-21 elements to be used in conversion of metadata from one into another. This discussion brings out the idea of OAI-PMH to make the metadata available to harvesters and attempts to explore the mechanism of DSpace for exposing metadata in a digital repository. Abstract: The emerging Information Technologies have brought many changes in libraries. These technologies have facilitated LIS professionals to work together to acquire and share library collection and provide digital library services to the user community. Increase of the literature in all subjects and shrinking of the library budget made the libraries depend upon each other. This leads to library cooperation, resource sharing and networking. Now the more accepted system of resource sharing is library consortia. Consortia approach is one of the many ways of maintaining cooperation and coordination among the libraries and in fact it has emerged as the ‘state of the art’ in library cooperation in recent years. The online databases; electronic journals are facilitate the formation of consortia among the libraries. This paper highlights the past and existing resource sharing and networking status of Bangladesh. In this paper the authors also depict the benefits of library consortia and try to provide some recommendations for the formation of library consortia in Bangladesh. Abstract: Meta search engines are powerful tools that search multiple search engines simultaneously. Unlike crawler-based search engines such as Google, AllTheWeb, AltaVista and others, meta search engines generally do not build and maintain their own web indexes. Instead, they use the indexes built by others, aggregating and often postprocessing results in unique ways. Meta search engines accept your query, and send it out to multiple search engines in parallel. They are often quite fast, using private “backdoor” servers made available by the search engines they query. They get this privileged status thanks to revenue sharing agreements. There are several advantages to using meta search engines, though they’re not always the most appropriate tool. The most obvious advantage is that you can get results from multiple search engines without having to visit each in turn. Apart from the time savings, there is some evidence that this gives your search a broader scope, since each individual search engine’s index differs from all others. Present paper attempts to highlights the role of meta search engine in web- based information retrieval URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1327 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Advances in Information Communication Technology (ICT) has created immense methods for creating, storing, maintaining, accessing and preserving the traditional printed documents in digital form. The different publishers have taken the full advantage of publishing the research outputs of the academicians and deprive the institutions and the community of the institution from the research outputs. This paper explores the importance of Institutional Repository (IR) and the role of the Open Source Software (OSS) in building the Institutional Repository of any institution. To publish and serve the community of an institution building institutional repositories is the most feasible solution. We have to take the help of some special software packages to build up an institutional repository and the role of open source software in this regard is very important. The institutions which are economically not strong enough can take the advantage of using open source software to build up their own institutional repository and can expose their knowledge stock to the world. Abstract: A general observation of the northeastern universities and specifics based on NEHU experiences indicates that the universities in the northeastern regions record comparatively lower percentage of usage. The poor statistical show is attributed to the infrastructural dwarf in the universities. The nature of skewed usage pattern is found similar to other empirical studies suggesting that such methods may be espoused to form the parameters for determining the core collection of the electronic journal consortium. The paper briefly examines the existing subscription deals and suggested that resorting to alternative deals may strengthen collection and ultimately the usage pattern. The paper also maintains that higher per capita expenditure per students should be encouraged in the region to buildup infrastructure and come at par with the mainstream. Abstract: Indian education system is one of the largest and oldest education systems in the world. now in the Indian education system, universities form the base for success in higher education. Global competition in education system forced the Indian universities to change their curricula frequently and introduce new subjects, which impose a great demand to have good communication network infrastructure so that researchers, scholars and students can tap the most up-to-date information. To bring quality in higher education, the University Grants Commission (UGC) has taken major initiative to modernise the university campuses with the state-of-the-art campus wide networks and has set up its own nationwide communication network named UGC-Infonet. This paper introduces a cross-sectional view of this initiative. URI: 81-902079-3-8 Files in this item: 1
