Abstract: This paper reports on a human factors experiment with students’ Google searching. Two different student groups (novice and experienced) volunteered in this study. They carried out five search tasks and their performance was recorded through a computer screen recording application. Data was captured on the time taken, error rates and success score. After completion of search tasks, they all completed a questionnaire on their satisfaction with Google. The performance data showed that overall experienced students performed better. Differences were significant across all performance measures between groups. Students held neither highly positive nor highly negative perceptions about Google. Experienced students were significantly more satisfied with Google than the naive group. The findings could be used to redesign the present Google search engine. Abstract: Search engines are about excitement, optimism, hope and enrichment. Search engines are also about despair and disappointment. A researcher while using search engines for resource discovery might have experienced one or the other sentiments. One may say that user satisfaction depends much upon the search strategies deployed by the user. But at the same time its also depends upon the quality of search engine used for information retrieval. Today, there are many search engines used for resource discovery. They display the results of the searches made in readily-comprehensible manner with lots of customization possibilities including refining and sorting. This paper is an attempt to analyze qualitatively and quantitatively the three most used and popular search engines for academic resource discovery: Google Scholar, Scirus and Windows Live Academic. Abstract: The paper describes the importance of journal as an important medium of communicating recent developments in scientific research and the dependence of academic community of any University for their research work. It also presents the latest trend of journal publishing in electronic medium. Since, Indira Gandhi Memorial Library is the first University Library to introduce one of the major online medium to their academic community by subscribing EBSCO Online Journals Database, an analytical study of the usage statistics was undertaken in terms of number of sessions ,searches, abstracts and full text articles in order to measure deficiencies in the system. The data indicates that the usage is found extensive during initial years than the subsequent years. Abstracts and full text articles are more extensively referred Linking activity is also found to be constantly increased.. It is observed that the user’s unawareness regarding these developments is primarily affecting the usage of this new medium, whereas audit, renewal procedures, networking problems, etc. are added to the decline of the usage of e-journals. The paper suggests that a lot of orientation and publicity is still required to the academic community to increase the level of usage of such databases.
