Abstract: The article outlines the overview of Institutional Repositories. A growing number of universities across the globe are running institutional repositories projects using open source software, while many others are in the planning stages. We move towards global sharing of information using these software and librarian have to play pivotal role in archiving the digital content, produced by the faculty members. Within next few years, I expect that universities in India also create repositories and effectively use open source software. This article describes about the current development of Open Access Initiative, Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) an important infrastructure component for Institutional repositories. A convergence of technology developments and other initiatives has made IRs possible. Technology costs, especially storage costs, have dropped significantly. There is now a variety of open source and commercial software platforms available for an institution wishing to develop an IR.. The paper highlights about general overview of Institutional Repositories, open source software, standard and protocol and role of INFLIBNET. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/421 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The paper explores the role of an intelligent software agent as a mediator in information retrieval (IR). Software agents are autonomous programs which perform a specific personalized task in a heterogeneous and distributed environment. These autonomous, intelligent agents make decisions on behalf of the user, by narrowing the search domain and decreasing the human computer interaction, phenomenally. With the increasing number of institutes and universities across the country and globe it has become very important to share library services rather than duplicating the library facilities everywhere and incurring huge expenditure. In the present paper, the architecture for a digital library DIGLIB is proposed, which helps a user or a group of users identify and find reading material in a virtual or brick and mortar library of his or her interest. DIGLIB uses a software agent which is a unique combination of filtering and information agent to facilitate intelligent search. The information agent performs a general search on various sites rigorously based on a keyword and phrases. The short listed sites are further subjected to a specific search by the filtering agent. The information agent performs a breadth first search on the links ahead and also provides navigation recommendation. A rule-base is maintained by the filtering agent using premises like broad area of interest, specific area of interest, type of article, book, magazine, journals, periodicals etc. to be searched for further narrowing the search domain and suggesting URNs of digital libraries of user’s interest. An attempt has been made to design a digital library interface using an intelligent agent which continually runs in the background and facilitates the task of finding a suitable match between the desired library service and user’s requirement. Abstract: Standardisation in the exchange formats and structure of a database is essential to facilitate exchange of data in efficient and effective way between the libraries. The adoption of different standard creates incompatibility in exchanging data which act as a major barrier in the use of bibliographic and related information. Format compatibilities are necessary for computerized cataloguing data and these are being standardized by the ISO. The MARC 21 format is one of the popular standard exchange format which adhere to ISO 2709 standard and are using majority of the countries in the world. For exchanging data in machine readable form. This paper discusses the history and development of MARC formats, its structure and salient features which made MARC format a set of standard for identifying, storing and communicating cataloguing information. Abstract: It is an indisputable fact that the computer information revolution has fundamentally changed library services across the nation for the past decades. Two recent advancements of information technologies, in particular, had significant impact on Library services. First, the introduction of CD-ROM technology has provided library users powerful access to large databases. Second, the creation of electronic networks has made online remote information access a reality. With the introduction of CD-ROM had a powerful impact on the storage and retrieval of information. CD-ROMs have proved particularly effective for storing bibliographical references. What are the CD-ROM Databases, why we use them and why we don’t want to use them in academic libraries are discussed briefly. Types of databases are explained by illustration. Search features commonly available in four selected CD-ROM databases such as keyword search, phrase search, Boolean search etc are discussed briefly. The selected CD-ROM databases are Ulrich’s on disc from Directory, Ei Compendex Bibliographic database, and Emerald full-text database of journal article. Some of the general issues related to the searching and retrieval of information from CD-ROM databases are briefly discussed. Some common points have been identified that the user must consider in order to quickly accessing information on CD-ROM databases in an effective way. Standards for Creating Bibliographic Databases in Indian Academic Libraries under INFLIBNET UmbrellaChandrakar, Rajesh; Prakash, K; Chand, Prem; Murthy, T A V (INFLIBNET Center, November NaN, 2004)[more][less]
Abstract: In the field of library and information science, importance of cataloguing, classification, abstracting and indexing standards play a major role to represent the appropriate information of any document for patron’s use. In beginning, these standards were used to the documents in the print formats like shelf list, catalogue card etc. Gradually, after the invention of the computer technology, representation of information in print format has changed into the electronic format. There with the development of technology, due to flood of information and variations in the representation of the information, were forced the profession to develop different bibliographic standards; till date almost more than 30 bibliographic standards has emerged. Thus, every country is following their own bibliographic standards for representing the print documents into the electronic format. Same way, India is also working in creating the bibliographic databases of the resources available in different academic libraries of the country. INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network) Centre, UGC, Ahmedabad has embarked upon this issue and working in war footing level to achieve the goal. The authors describe the bibliographic standards being used for creating databases by Indian Academic libraries under INFLIBNET umbrella. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/423 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Information is available in many different forms. Search Engines are very useful tools to find out information available on the net. The competition among Internet search engines is intense, and that’s good news for net users. But despite each search service’s attempt to become the ultimate online find-it tool, no single service can cater for every need. Library and Information professional use this type of tools and get better result from the site, use popular search engines. Internet is a wide network many type of information can get it. In this paper the Authors suggest that the resources are available in the net somehow know web address of the site without any information of the site find the information. For better use of this one should use the search engine. Search engines have a variety of ways to refine and control your searches. Some of them offer menu systems for this. Others require you to use special commands as part of the query. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/425 Files in this item: 1
