Abstract: Standardisation in the exchange formats and structure of a database is essential to facilitate exchange of data in efficient and effective way between the libraries. The adoption of different standard creates incompatibility in exchanging data which act as a major barrier in the use of bibliographic and related information. Format compatibilities are necessary for computerized cataloguing data and these are being standardized by the ISO. The MARC 21 format is one of the popular standard exchange format which adhere to ISO 2709 standard and are using majority of the countries in the world. For exchanging data in machine readable form. This paper discusses the history and development of MARC formats, its structure and salient features which made MARC format a set of standard for identifying, storing and communicating cataloguing information. Abstract: The contribution of networking technologies for a library is significant. The library network and its security are major issues for the library professionals. Libraries and information centers are changing rapidly towards digitization. Now a day’s stand-alone computer is of no use. It must be on network to utilize the resources. Computer networking involves connecting desktop computers, laptops, hubs, switches and other connectivity devices. Library professional requires inside planning in establishing library network in respect of data transmission speed and library applications. This paper presents model for library networks from low bandwidth application to the multimedia rich high bandwidth intensive library applications. The paper is also concentrating on library network security. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/428 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: As the supply of information grows more and more comprehensive, the complexity in handling it also grows. The need for reliable Content Management System (CMS) becomes more and more obvious. A Content Management System allows content to be stored, retrieved, edited, updated, controlled, then output in a variety of ways such that the incremental cost of each update cycle and output production shrinks dramatically over time. Since the amount of information is emerging day to day at a tremendous speed, to find particular information in the mist of information explosion is very difficult and so there is an urgent need for content or knowledge management and services to be adopted in Libraries. Content management is as set of tasks and processes for managing content explicitly targeted for publication throughout its life from creation to archive. CMS are essential for large or even small scale projects which involve the capture of creation of digital assets and is necessary for the creation of any basic Web sites. This paper explains about the concepts of content management, its components, needs and advantages. How the contents can be created, accessed and managed in the digital environment have also been discussed in this paper. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/437 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Slowly and steadily, Indian villages are getting wired up, we all saw the model of growth evolved by – neighborhood cable operators, it is only a matter of time. New ways of communicating with rural India are beginning to emerge. If cable television can happen, can broadband and convergence be far behind? Liberal exchange of information and experiences over the internet, person – to –person communication amongst virtual communities spread over thousands of miles, distribution of products and services though this multi- transactional conduit, is converting today’s world in to a vibrant global and information village. Abstract: Information is available in many different forms. Search Engines are very useful tools to find out information available on the net. The competition among Internet search engines is intense, and that’s good news for net users. But despite each search service’s attempt to become the ultimate online find-it tool, no single service can cater for every need. Library and Information professional use this type of tools and get better result from the site, use popular search engines. Internet is a wide network many type of information can get it. In this paper the Authors suggest that the resources are available in the net somehow know web address of the site without any information of the site find the information. For better use of this one should use the search engine. Search engines have a variety of ways to refine and control your searches. Some of them offer menu systems for this. Others require you to use special commands as part of the query. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/425 Files in this item: 1

Standards for Creating Bibliographic Databases in Indian Academic Libraries under INFLIBNET UmbrellaChandrakar, Rajesh; Prakash, K; Chand, Prem; Murthy, T A V (INFLIBNET Center, November NaN, 2004)[more][less]
Abstract: In the field of library and information science, importance of cataloguing, classification, abstracting and indexing standards play a major role to represent the appropriate information of any document for patron’s use. In beginning, these standards were used to the documents in the print formats like shelf list, catalogue card etc. Gradually, after the invention of the computer technology, representation of information in print format has changed into the electronic format. There with the development of technology, due to flood of information and variations in the representation of the information, were forced the profession to develop different bibliographic standards; till date almost more than 30 bibliographic standards has emerged. Thus, every country is following their own bibliographic standards for representing the print documents into the electronic format. Same way, India is also working in creating the bibliographic databases of the resources available in different academic libraries of the country. INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network) Centre, UGC, Ahmedabad has embarked upon this issue and working in war footing level to achieve the goal. The authors describe the bibliographic standards being used for creating databases by Indian Academic libraries under INFLIBNET umbrella. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/423 Files in this item: 1

Prakash, Nupur (INFLIBNET Center, November NaN, 2004)[more][less]
Abstract: The paper explores the role of an intelligent software agent as a mediator in information retrieval (IR). Software agents are autonomous programs which perform a specific personalized task in a heterogeneous and distributed environment. These autonomous, intelligent agents make decisions on behalf of the user, by narrowing the search domain and decreasing the human computer interaction, phenomenally. With the increasing number of institutes and universities across the country and globe it has become very important to share library services rather than duplicating the library facilities everywhere and incurring huge expenditure. In the present paper, the architecture for a digital library DIGLIB is proposed, which helps a user or a group of users identify and find reading material in a virtual or brick and mortar library of his or her interest. DIGLIB uses a software agent which is a unique combination of filtering and information agent to facilitate intelligent search. The information agent performs a general search on various sites rigorously based on a keyword and phrases. The short listed sites are further subjected to a specific search by the filtering agent. The information agent performs a breadth first search on the links ahead and also provides navigation recommendation. A rule-base is maintained by the filtering agent using premises like broad area of interest, specific area of interest, type of article, book, magazine, journals, periodicals etc. to be searched for further narrowing the search domain and suggesting URNs of digital libraries of user’s interest. An attempt has been made to design a digital library interface using an intelligent agent which continually runs in the background and facilitates the task of finding a suitable match between the desired library service and user’s requirement. Abstract: Universities and other organization are producing digital objects articles, reports, thesis, Audio/Video, datasets in ever increasing number. Libraries around the world are building up their own Institutional repository centre using a variety of software packages for digital asset and content management and also collect, preserve and provide access to these digital objects. This paper will highlight the needs of an Institutional Repository and the initiative taken up by the INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network Centre) in building up the Institutional Repository by using the open source software Dspace developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
