Abstract: The paper discuss Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) library, digitization efforts and its custom made library software created with Visual Basic. The North Arcot Educational Trust established the Vellore Engineering College in 1984. This college is situated in the city outskirts of Vellore in Tamil Nadu; Southern India. To satisfy the information needs of faculty and students of the university, and to provide all possible user services, the institute established the Central Library in 1984. The VIT Central library at present is housed in a four-storied building with 51,000 square feet built-in area and is centrally air-conditioned. The library building is well designed and constructed keeping in mind all the necessary functions of a library. Mentions all available modules of the software. The VIT library is using simple in-house developed library software since 1998. The software was developed in Visual Basic, by the Center for Technical Support of the institute. The software consists of only two modules, namely, Circulation and OPAC modules and supported by bar code. The VIT library having a well planned library building and modern facilities is trying to digitize their library. Abstract: Study on Web search services have reported that about 90% of Web searchers using simple queries and only 10% use advanced query operators. In this study, three search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN, are compared in the areas of coverage and duplication in terms of use of Query Operators. Google is found at the top in terms of coverage, as compared with the other two search engines, i.e. MSN Search and Yahoo!. Analysis shows that there is a significant change in coverage when using query operators in all the three search engines. It is found that correct use of query operators would increase the effectiveness of web searching. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/432 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Content originators and publishers are employing Digital Rights Management (DRM) to protect the digital content by continuous replication and prevent the abuse of their intellectual property. However, locking the content and controlling operations on the content have presented interesting challenges in supporting fair use in the digital world. Libraries are not only purchasing intellectual property, but they are also producing and maintaining it. The article highlights the importance of DRM, its fair use issues, how to improve content delivery and its beneficial services for libraries. Electronic access. Abstract: Politicians constitute a particular group of users whose information need and information seeking behaviour is quite specific. In our paper an attempt is being made to ascertain the information needs of politicians who belong to different parties in Manipur. The channels and sources of information they use and their involvement in information activities are some of the parameters on which emphasis has been given. The barriers encountered by the politicians have also been chalked out to draw solutions. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/442 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: It is an indisputable fact that the computer information revolution has fundamentally changed library services across the nation for the past decades. Two recent advancements of information technologies, in particular, had significant impact on Library services. First, the introduction of CD-ROM technology has provided library users powerful access to large databases. Second, the creation of electronic networks has made online remote information access a reality. With the introduction of CD-ROM had a powerful impact on the storage and retrieval of information. CD-ROMs have proved particularly effective for storing bibliographical references. What are the CD-ROM Databases, why we use them and why we don’t want to use them in academic libraries are discussed briefly. Types of databases are explained by illustration. Search features commonly available in four selected CD-ROM databases such as keyword search, phrase search, Boolean search etc are discussed briefly. The selected CD-ROM databases are Ulrich’s on disc from Directory, Ei Compendex Bibliographic database, and Emerald full-text database of journal article. Some of the general issues related to the searching and retrieval of information from CD-ROM databases are briefly discussed. Some common points have been identified that the user must consider in order to quickly accessing information on CD-ROM databases in an effective way. Abstract: As -and when the number of resources grows, complexity in organizing the static pages will also grow and it becomes very unfriendly to the end-users. In this situation one may have to think about database driven WebPages that would help the end users to interact with the stored information to retrieve the required information. The web databases have become very popular in the Internet world for organizing the Information resources. Library and Information centers can effectively utilize this web technoiogy for improving as well as delivering new services. This paper discusses the tools and the techniques of the 'Database Web' connectivity in brief. Description: This is only a Abstracts URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/447 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Digital libraries of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) offer an alternative to this waste of valuable academic scholarship and offer researchers and University Libraries in India opportunities to explore the possibilities electronic publishing trend in academic sector. The emergence of UGC Infonet, the aspiring and dream project of University Grants Commission, which also aims at Content Creation by Indian Academic Sector, will definitely boost this idea The idea of E- Theses and Dissertations (ETD) is coming up in International scenario, which can be easily located, readily accessible and delivered over the web. While describing a framework for Indian Universities to go zbout with creating their own Institutional Repositories of Theses and Dissertations, the paper also high lighten the Formats, Software and copyright issues related to ETD archiving. It suggests DSpace as the software. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/429 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has a very vast meaning and it has been dominating each and every aspect of this universe. Due to ICT only whole world has been become a global village and the other side ICT is accelerating information explosion, which leads to the problem of bibliographical control. But there are some tools, which can help us to manage these digital contents in a systematic order for use. The concept of digital library is very much suitable for information management. Here, we have Greenstone and DSpace Open Source Software for content creation, which are being used for maintaining an institutional repository. After content creations, the objective should be accessing these contents globally, for this purpose we need some broadband networks. In India, UGC-Infonet is the example for such kind of country-wide network which is being responsible for improving the higher educational system in the country with state-of-the-art technology. Now contents and infrastructure with strong network are with us, UGC-Infonet: E-Journals Consortium is one of the good examples which show that how we can facilitate the educational system across the country through this kind of ICT system. Abstract: Knowledge Discovery or Data Mining is the partially automated process of extracting patterns, usually from large data sets. Library and information services in schools, colleges, universities, corporations and communities obtain information about their users, circulation history, resources in the collection, and search patterns. Now a days many libraries have taken advantage of these data as a way to improve customer service, manage acquisition budgets, or influence strategic decision-making about uses of information in their organizations. The paper tries give an overview on data sources and possible applications of data mining techniques in the library. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/435 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The article outlines the overview of Institutional Repositories. A growing number of universities across the globe are running institutional repositories projects using open source software, while many others are in the planning stages. We move towards global sharing of information using these software and librarian have to play pivotal role in archiving the digital content, produced by the faculty members. Within next few years, I expect that universities in India also create repositories and effectively use open source software. This article describes about the current development of Open Access Initiative, Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) an important infrastructure component for Institutional repositories. A convergence of technology developments and other initiatives has made IRs possible. Technology costs, especially storage costs, have dropped significantly. There is now a variety of open source and commercial software platforms available for an institution wishing to develop an IR.. The paper highlights about general overview of Institutional Repositories, open source software, standard and protocol and role of INFLIBNET. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/421 Files in this item: 1
