Abstract: The contribution of networking technologies for a library is significant. The library network and its security are major issues for the library professionals. Libraries and information centers are changing rapidly towards digitization. Now a day’s stand-alone computer is of no use. It must be on network to utilize the resources. Computer networking involves connecting desktop computers, laptops, hubs, switches and other connectivity devices. Library professional requires inside planning in establishing library network in respect of data transmission speed and library applications. This paper presents model for library networks from low bandwidth application to the multimedia rich high bandwidth intensive library applications. Abstract: It is an indisputable fact that the computer information revolution has fundamentally changed library services across the nation for the past decades. Two recent advancements of information technologies, in particular, had significant impact on Library services. First, the introduction of CD-ROM technology has provided library users powerful access to large databases. Second, the creation of electronic networks has made online remote information access a reality. With the introduction of CD-ROM had a powerful impact on the storage and retrieval of information. CD-ROMs have proved particularly effective for storing bibliographical references. What are the CD-ROM Databases, why we use them and why we don’t want to use them in academic libraries are discussed briefly. Types of databases are explained by illustration. Search features commonly available in four selected CD-ROM databases such as keyword search, phrase search, Boolean search etc are discussed briefly. The selected CD-ROM databases are Ulrich’s on disc from Directory, Ei Compendex Bibliographic database, and Emerald full-text database of journal article. Some of the general issues related to the searching and retrieval of information from CD-ROM databases are briefly discussed. Some common points have been identified that the user must consider in order to quickly accessing information on CD-ROM databases in an effective way. Abstract: In the field of library and information science, importance of cataloguing, classification, abstracting and indexing standards play a major role to represent the appropriate information of any document for patron’s use. In beginning, these standards were used to the documents in the print formats like shelf list, catalogue card etc. Gradually, after the invention of the computer technology, representation of information in print format has changed into the electronic format. There with the development of technology, due to flood of information and variations in the representation of the information, were forced the profession to develop different bibliographic standards; till date almost more than 30 bibliographic standards has emerged. Thus, every country is following their own bibliographic standards for representing the print documents into the electronic format. Same way, India is also working in creating the bibliographic databases of the resources available in different academic libraries of the country. INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network) Centre, UGC, Ahmedabad has embarked upon this issue and working in war footing level to achieve the goal. Abstract: This paper describes about the usefulness and advantage of Internet in day-to-day life, impact of Internet on the library and information services etc. and explains the aims and objectives of the present survey on the usage of Internet in Barak Valley, methodology used etc. The author highlights the use of Internet in this region is in nascent stage and it has become important to make people of this valley aware for the use of Internet and regarding its potential for having enormous resources of information which can be search instantly provided the minimum facility for Internet access is available. The survey results also reveals the users communities of different strata, use of Internet from personal connectivity or from Internet café or office, or academic institutions, types of connectivity for Internet account subscription, place and time for Internet search, time slot for Internet connectivity, use of Internet tools and services, mostly used search engines for Internet access, use of browsers for Internet search, rate of Internet access from Internet café etc. Besides above aspects, the final part of the paper describes the role of Internet in library and information services, problems of getting Internet connectivity, and some suggestions for making people aware for the use of Internet and popularise the use of Internet among the users communities by arranging short term training programme by Computer Institutions, Regional Engineering College(REC), Assam University and other private Institutions URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/440 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: An attempt has been made to study the IT awareness of the user community in the State of Manipur. The paper highlights the information needs and dependence of information on Community Information Centres (CIC) are analysed. The conclusion focuses on the considerable work and effort needed for imparting computer literacy, information literacy for preparing and powering the masses for the construction of knowledge based society. Further, according to the requirements of the user community, content preparation is necessary and it has been suggested that, the information available on internet may update on a frequent basis usually in local language for the benefit of local communities. Abstract: Politicians constitute a particular group of users whose information need and information seeking behaviour is quite specific. In our paper an attempt is being made to ascertain the information needs of politicians who belong to different parties in Manipur. The channels and sources of information they use and their involvement in information activities are some of the parameters on which emphasis has been given. Abstract: The paper discuss Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) library, digitization efforts and its custom made library software created with Visual Basic. The North Arcot Educational Trust established the Vellore Engineering College in 1984. This college is situated in the city outskirts of Vellore in Tamil Nadu; Southern India. To satisfy the information needs of faculty and students of the university, and to provide all possible user services, the institute established the Central Library in 1984. The VIT Central library at present is housed in a four-storied building with 51,000 square feet built-in area and is centrally air-conditioned. The library building is well designed and constructed keeping in mind all the necessary functions of a library. Mentions all available modules of the software. The VIT library is using simple in-house developed library software since 1998. The software was developed in Visual Basic, by the Center for Technical Support of the institute. The software consists of only two modules, namely, Circulation and OPAC modules and supported by bar code. The VIT library having a well planned library building and modern facilities is trying to digitize their library. Library and Information professional use this type of tools and get better result from the site, use popular search engines. Internet is a wide network many type of information can get it. In this paper the Authors suggest that the resources are available in the net somehow know web address of the site without any information of the site find the information. For better use of this one should use the search engine. Search engines have a variety of ways to refine and control your searches. Some of them offer menu systems for this.
