Abstract: As the supply of information grows more and more comprehensive, the complexity in handling it also grows. The need for reliable Content Management System (CMS) becomes more and more obvious. A Content Management System allows content to be stored, retrieved, edited, updated, controlled, then output in a variety of ways such that the incremental cost of each update cycle and output production shrinks dramatically over time. Since the amount of information is emerging day to day at a tremendous speed, to find particular information in the mist of information explosion is very difficult and so there is an urgent need for content or knowledge management and services to be adopted in Libraries. Content management is as set of tasks and processes for managing content explicitly targeted for publication throughout its life from creation to archive. CMS are essential for large or even small scale projects which involve the capture of creation of digital assets and is necessary for the creation of any basic Web sites. This paper explains about the concepts of content management, its components, needs and advantages. How the contents can be created, accessed and managed in the digital environment have also been discussed in this paper. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/437 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Content originators and publishers are employing Digital Rights Management (DRM) to protect the digital content by continuous replication and prevent the abuse of their intellectual property. However, locking the content and controlling operations on the content have presented interesting challenges in supporting fair use in the digital world. Libraries are not only purchasing intellectual property, but they are also producing and maintaining it. The article highlights the importance of DRM, its fair use issues, how to improve content delivery and its beneficial services for libraries. Electronic access. Abstract: Digital libraries of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) offer an alternative to this waste of valuable academic scholarship and offer researchers and University Libraries in India opportunities to explore the possibilities electronic publishing trend in academic sector. The emergence of UGC Infonet, the aspiring and dream project of University Grants Commission, which also aims at Content Creation by Indian Academic Sector, will definitely boost this idea The idea of E- Theses and Dissertations (ETD) is coming up in International scenario, which can be easily located, readily accessible and delivered over the web. While describing a framework for Indian Universities to go zbout with creating their own Institutional Repositories of Theses and Dissertations, the paper also high lighten the Formats, Software and copyright issues related to ETD archiving. It suggests DSpace as the software. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/429 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Study on Web search services have reported that about 90% of Web searchers using simple queries and only 10% use advanced query operators. In this study, three search engines, Google, Yahoo and MSN, are compared in the areas of coverage and duplication in terms of use of Query Operators. Google is found at the top in terms of coverage, as compared with the other two search engines, i.e. MSN Search and Yahoo!. Analysis shows that there is a significant change in coverage when using query operators in all the three search engines. It is found that correct use of query operators would increase the effectiveness of web searching. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/432 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The article outlines the overview of Institutional Repositories. A growing number of universities across the globe are running institutional repositories projects using open source software, while many others are in the planning stages. We move towards global sharing of information using these software and librarian have to play pivotal role in archiving the digital content, produced by the faculty members. Within next few years, I expect that universities in India also create repositories and effectively use open source software. This article describes about the current development of Open Access Initiative, Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) an important infrastructure component for Institutional repositories. A convergence of technology developments and other initiatives has made IRs possible. Technology costs, especially storage costs, have dropped significantly. There is now a variety of open source and commercial software platforms available for an institution wishing to develop an IR.. The paper highlights about general overview of Institutional Repositories, open source software, standard and protocol and role of INFLIBNET. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/421 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Universities and other organization are producing digital objects articles, reports, thesis, Audio/Video, datasets in ever increasing number. Libraries around the world are building up their own Institutional repository centre using a variety of software packages for digital asset and content management and also collect, preserve and provide access to these digital objects. This paper will highlight the needs of an Institutional Repository and the initiative taken up by the INFLIBNET (Information and Library Network Centre) in building up the Institutional Repository by using the open source software Dspace developed by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Abstract: The paper explores the role of an intelligent software agent as a mediator in information retrieval (IR). Software agents are autonomous programs which perform a specific personalized task in a heterogeneous and distributed environment. These autonomous, intelligent agents make decisions on behalf of the user, by narrowing the search domain and decreasing the human computer interaction, phenomenally. With the increasing number of institutes and universities across the country and globe it has become very important to share library services rather than duplicating the library facilities everywhere and incurring huge expenditure. In the present paper, the architecture for a digital library DIGLIB is proposed, which helps a user or a group of users identify and find reading material in a virtual or brick and mortar library of his or her interest. DIGLIB uses a software agent which is a unique combination of filtering and information agent to facilitate intelligent search. The information agent performs a general search on various sites rigorously based on a keyword and phrases. The short listed sites are further subjected to a specific search by the filtering agent. The information agent performs a breadth first search on the links ahead and also provides navigation recommendation. A rule-base is maintained by the filtering agent using premises like broad area of interest, specific area of interest, type of article, book, magazine, journals, periodicals etc. to be searched for further narrowing the search domain and suggesting URNs of digital libraries of user’s interest. An attempt has been made to design a digital library interface using an intelligent agent which continually runs in the background and facilitates the task of finding a suitable match between the desired library service and user’s requirement.
