Abstract: With hundreds of millions of web pages online, we could spend a lifetime surfing the Web, following links from one page to another. Amusing perhaps, but not very efficient if we are after some specific information. One of the biggest complaints we hear concerns the difficulty of targeting information. Where do we Start ? Searching the Internet requires part skill, part luck and a little bit of art. Abstract: Content is in essence, any type or 'unit' of digital information that is used to populate a page. It can be text, images, graphics, video, sound etc - or in other words - anything that is likely to be published across an inter-, intra- and/or extranet. Content Management is effectively the management of the content, by combining rules, process and workflows in such a way that centralised webmasters and decentralised web authors/editors can create, edit, mange and publish all the content of a web page in accordance with a given framework or requirements. Abstract: Resource sharing is an age-old concept in the Library and Information profession, which is addressed by terms such as co-operation, consortia, networking etc. Information explosion has made it difficult for libraries to acquire all the required information resources, which are published. The change in information generation and transmission has made us to move from print to electronic in terms of acquiring information resources and to provide services. freeE-Journals Information Service (freeE-JIS) is a demonstration system, developed at NCSI as an extension for E-journal Information Service (E-JIS) provided by the Centre in IISc. The prototype freeE-JIS supports Co-operative E-journals Content Management System, where libraries willing to participate can share their knowledge of free E-journals, available on the Internet. The software for freeE-JIS was developed on Linux platform using Apache Web Server with MySQL database as the back end. Abstract: Most of the libraries and information centers now-a-days have acquired access to Internet. Users of these libraries and information centers are making good use of this facility. However, it has been observed that freshers and laymen find it difficult to browse the web effectively since the web is not indexed in any standard manner. Search engines are popular tools for locating web pages, but they often return thousand of results. Without a clear search strategy, using a search engine is like wandering aimlessly in the stacks of a library trying to find a particular book. The presents various methods of searching the web and also presents an easy to follow process using search engines and subject directories for finding relevant information on the World Wide Web. Abstract: Technology advances over the past two decades have made data retrieval faster and easier, giving rise to a substantial industry providing access to professional, business and scientific information. Some progress has been made towards increasing the relevancy of the data with the induction of various search engines and subject directories. Despite these activities, information sources remain scattered, hard to find and difficult to access. Using technology, visionary institutions, associations and individuals build a kind of network resource discovery service, called “Subject Gateways” on the web, which is de-facto network use environment. This subject gateways evolved during the last five years among early digital library projects within the library communities of the various countries. Subject gateways allows libraries and related organizations to explore the usefulness of their subject expertise in the organisation of knowledge in the word of network -based, digital information. This paper gives an overview of the subject gateways, its historical development, definitions, features and lastly the burning issues encompassing it.
