Abstract: Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has a very vast meaning and it has been dominating each and every aspect of this universe. Due to ICT only whole world has been become a global village and the other side ICT is accelerating information explosion, which leads to the problem of bibliographical control. But there are some tools, which can help us to manage these digital contents in a systematic order for use. The concept of digital library is very much suitable for information management. Here, we have Greenstone and DSpace Open Source Software for content creation, which are being used for maintaining an institutional repository. After content creations, the objective should be accessing these contents globally, for this purpose we need some broadband networks. In India, UGC-Infonet is the example for such kind of country-wide network which is being responsible for improving the higher educational system in the country with state-of-the-art technology. Now contents and infrastructure with strong network are with us, UGC-Infonet: E-Journals Consortium is one of the good examples which show that how we can facilitate the educational system across the country through this kind of ICT system. Abstract: The whole chain of e-book publishing is changing as the distinction between author, publisher, reader or user and library are being hazy. In this context there are many issues that need to be addressed, developments that are admirable and emerging trends that need to be understood. These include tracing the development from print to e-book; various publishing models for ebooks; various distribution models for e-books, emerging and genuine document formats and file formats used in e-book; new file sharing technologies; authoring and reading e-book; policies and legislation; fighting with piracy and concept of fair use; e-book business models; growth and impact of the e-book market in both developed and developing countries and the latest e-book trends and future technologies. In addition to this changed context, librarians are facing several other challenges in providing information, which are discussed in this paper. Abstract: The online revolution brought about by the world wide web accompanied by other advancements in the Information & Communication Technology (ICT) is having a deep impact on the publishing industry. Readers are enjoying the fruits in the form of online journals and databases. Though the development in the area of e-books is not so rapid, yet people have started realizing its potential as an efficient & effective tool for knowledge storage and dissemination. More and more publishers are now coming up with ebook solutions for academic institutions and libraries too have started to develop collection development policies for e-books. The production, dissemination and consumption of e-books will increase substantially when certain issues regarding universal standard and copyright are resolved and we are in a better position to handle the e-books. Libraries will also look forward to more affordable and useful subscription policy for acquiring electronic books. At present there are several formats for e-books, many softwares available for e-book reading. Like Open Access journals, there are many e-books projects which offer free online books for reading and downloading which have been discussed in the present paper. The paper also discusses the commercial e-book publishers and the advantages of ebook subscription for academic libraries. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1432 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Developments in Information and Communication Technology (ICT), particularly in intranets, the Internet, hardware, multimedia software, and videoconferencing have created a tremendous potential for multi-site course delivery and on-demand training to people’s work sites. Four major areas for implementing E-learning are: knowledge management for corporates, education and training for corporate and individuals, performance support, and collaborative working. This paper describes these aspects in the verge of globalisation. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/309 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Advancement in the information and communication technology (ICT) has taken us in to the ‘information age’ and has given rise to ‘digital economy’ and form a part of the infrastructure sector of the digital economy. The two most important tools of ICT responsible for these unprecedented changes are ‘computers’ and ‘internet’. We can very well imagine the magnitude of development and success if these are made available to common people. But making these tools available to common people is a Herculean task and this has given rise to the issue of ‘digital– divide’, i.e. “disparities/differences based on economic status, geographic location, between those who ‘have’ or ‘do not have’ access to information, internet and other information and communication technological services and those who ‘have’ or ‘do not have’ the skills, knowledge and abilities to use information, internet and other information and communication technologies”. Hence this study/research is an another step ahead to find out real nature and the extent of digital divide existing in India and to suggest ways and means to bridge the gap between those who ‘have’ and ‘have not’ access to information and communication tools and services. Abstract: Information Communication Technologies (ICT) are undergoing rapid changes. Librarian needs to redesign the structure of their library to meet the changing needs by learning and implementing new practices and technologies. How does one provide excellent library service through digital technologies? What are the expectations of digital library patrons? How do we make library patrons satisfied in this digital era? What are the skills librarians need to possess? These questions are addressed in this articles. The digital librarian acts as guardian of the information superhighway and acts as a symbiotic human-machine guru. Article also highlights the roles and functions of a digital library information retrieval, navigation and browsing. This paper outlines professional skills and technological competencies for the development of library professional staff in order to meet the current and future need of users as well as to survive in a rapidly changing technological environment. Abstract: ICT plays a crucial role in today’s increasingly globalized world. Libraries are in a process of fundamental change brought about by radical changes in technology. In this state of transition to introduce electronic library services, traditional libraries offer support in the way of personnel, funding, information delivery and management for these electronic libraries. The electronic library is growing fast in parallel to the traditional library. The high rate of growth is dictated by factors outside the library. Libraries are under a lot of pressure to achieve their noble goals much faster than planned, to adopt new technologies, to compete with others in managing the tremendous growth of information and to be able to lead in the area. The management and delivery of information in an electronic library differs from traditional library in many ways. The purpose of this paper is to collect the management and delivery problems arisen out of adoption of the electronic library and to present possible solutions in the areas of five basic parts of scientific management – planning, organizing, staffing, directing and controlling. Abstract: Information is knowledge, facts or data. For the purpose of enabling the users to assimilate information, it should be repacked. Knowledge becomes information when it is externalized i.e. put in to the process of communication. The effectiveness of communication technology depends how well it provides its clients with information rapidly, economically and authentically. A large number of ICT enabled services including OPAC; e-resources etc. are available in the university library. Studies have been done to find the impact of ICT on different sections of CUSAT library by observing the activities of different sections; discussions with colleagues and visitors; and analyzing the entries in the library records. The results of the studies are presented here in the form of a paper. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1232 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Just like all other aspects of life, the digital revolution has taken on the world of publishing also. With digital publishing coming to the fore, the publishing world has undergone several fundamental changes. Electronic publishing is basically a form of publishing in which books, journals and magazines are being produced and stored electronically rather than in print. These publications have all qualities of the normal publishing like the use of colours, graphics, images and are much convenient also. Electronic publishing empowers all writers in ways that no technology has ever done before. The use of licensed electronic information resources will continue to expand and in some cases become the sole or dominant means of access to content Without violating any issues of privacy or confidentiality we can dramatically enhance our understanding of information use. The paper attempts to discuss the impact of electronic publishing on Library & Information Science area and radical changes in the publishing industry especially with impact of electronic media and Internet. This paper attempted to explain and predict ‘LIS’ intention of adopting this technology. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1253 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Increasing use of technology as a means of accessing information and the recent shift towards cooperative learning and group study have brought changes in the way patrons use libraries and library resources. This article is based on the part of a survey that investigated the ICT knowledge and skills of librarians at the Chandigarh City. A study population of 21 librarians of Chandigarh city were surveyed by a questionnaire to establish in what ways librarians were using ICTs, what were the level of ICT knowledge and skills amongst the librarians, what problems the librarians faced in the use of ICTs and what their ICT training needs were. Interpretation of the results revealed a low level of ICT knowledge and skill amongst librarians and a general lack of formal training for ICTs amongst the academic librarians.
