Abstract:

The paper contains the substantial implication of the changing web as “web 2.0” for libraries and recognizes that while these implications keep very close to the history and mission of libraries. It describes the theory and definition to the practices of librarianship, specially addressing how RSS feed (popular tool of Web 2.0 technologies) might make changes in libraries provide access to their collection and user support for accessing the same. RSS aggregator applications installed in a library system, and coupled with the social network of the library, will enable users to have a single, customized personal library page that syndicates all the library content of interest to them and their research, elimination of irrelevant information. It also highlights the Download and installation of RSS reader software along with the activation process. Lastly, it provides the list of resources (both software & services) and libraries using these tools.

Abstract:

Electronic publishing has been revolutionizing the format of the recorded knowledge. Electronic information services are attracting reader’s attention in today’s network environment. This changing scenario in library environment has arisen for the need and use of e-journals along with print version. Electronic journals (e-journals) bring new challenges before the library and information professionals to give full text access to scholarly publications both in print and electronic version to its end users. The aim of this paper is to identify various issues relating to access and bibliographic control of e-journals, access management problems, policy issues, and development of e-journals consortium approach to subscribe scholarly peer reviewed journals for their library users in network environment. It also describes a brief account of UGC-INFONET E-Journals Consortium, INDEST, FORSA, and other consortium for providing access to scholarly journals to the end users of universities and institutions of higher learning for their R& D activities

Abstract:

Outlines the access methods and new technologies in accessing local and global electronic resources in the libraries. The subject gateways, portals, search engines and Library OPAC’s (Online Public Access Catalog) are an important method of providing current and reliable information in a variety of disciplines and research areas. This paper describes various access points that disseminate information to researchers, librarians, and other web users in the various disciplines. Summarizes some of the issues, and explore the potential role of World Wide Web portals in helping library consortia to fulfill their objectives. At the end the paper highlights the importance of portal service to the Indian academic community in the light of UGC-Infonet E-Journals consortium.
