Abstract: Standardisation in the exchange formats and structure of a database is essential to facilitate exchange of data in efficient and effective way between the libraries. The adoption of different standard creates incompatibility in exchanging data which act as a major barrier in the use of bibliographic and related information. Format compatibilities are necessary for computerized cataloguing data and these are being standardized by the ISO. The MARC 21 format is one of the popular standard exchange format which adhere to ISO 2709 standard and are using majority of the countries in the world. For exchanging data in machine readable form. This paper discusses the history and development of MARC formats, its structure and salient features which made MARC format a set of standard for identifying, storing and communicating cataloguing information. Abstract: The Web evolves rapidly. Day by day & WWW is currently experiencing a revolutionary growth due to its increasing participative community software applications. This paper highlights an emerging application development paradigm on the WWW, called mashup. Which uses latest generation of WWW tools and services enable web users to generate web applications that combine content from multiple sources, and provide them as unique services by adding values that suit their situational needs. This type of web applications is referred to as a Mashup. As blogs have enabled anyone to become a publisher, mashups stimulate web development by allowing anyone to combine existing data to develop single interactive web application. Current applications of mashups include tracking of events such as crime, hurricanes, earthquakes, meta-search integration of data and media feeds, interactive games, and as an organizer for web resources in a single interface. The implications of this emerging web integration and structuring paradigm remains yet to be explored fully. This paper describes mashups from a number of angles, highlighting current developments while providing sufficient illustrations to indicate its potential implications and their whole status in programmable Web.The role of Mashups on the web are presented, and existing & open emerging tools that assist in Mashup development are introduced. Abstract: The content of digital libraries includes data and metadata that describe various aspects of the digital record that consist of links or relationships to other data or metadata, whether internal or external to the digital library. Metadata is provided in order to provide richer searching than would be possible using standard free-text indexing. In particular it was desirable to allow users to search on a number of fields including Author, Title and Description. Metadata Expand the use of data incorporated in the digital object or text, and find ways of integrating different kinds of metadata. Metadata has been defined as “data about data”. It is information about an electronic resource which may be embedded in the resource. According to Gilliland-Swetland metadata is more than description; a more deeper conceptualization of metadata is needed as information professionals consider the range of their activities that may end up in included into digital information systems. There are three main types of metadata Descriptive metadata; Structural metadata; Administrative metadata. Traditional library cataloguing is a form of metadata and MARC21 and the rule sets used with it such as AACR2 are metadata standards. Metadata is particularly useful for large collections of documents or other materials, it can be used for managing the resource and for finding specific items. A Catalogue becomes as found by some libraries an essential tool for retrieval. Increasing size and complexity of the digital information available on the web, demands for new methods of its organization. Uniform and structured meta information which can effectively be employed to achieve this goal. “LibSys for library automation” is the prime mission of New Delhi based software company - Info-Tek Consultants Pvt. Ltd. The Libsys metadata facilitates ordering receiving loose issues, recording bound volumes of journals in print medium this can be easily converted to e- Journal recording by changing the item receiving data into e-journal release data. The location metadata in libsys can be easily converted to url.. Bound volumes can give the link to Url The Library of Congress’ Network Development and MARC Standards Office is developing a framework for working with MARC data in a XML environment. This framework is intended to be flexible and extensible to allow users to work with MARC data in ways specific to their needs. CONSER(2) began in the early 1970s as a project to convert manual serial cataloging into machine-readable records. It has evolved into an ongoing program to create and maintain high quality bibliographic records for serials. In keeping with its evolution, the name changed in 1986 from CONSER (CONversion of SERials) Project to the CONSER (Cooperative ONline SERials) Program. Describing electronic access to information is another challenge for the cataloger due to the different areas of the record involved, including the new electronic location and access field (856). 3rd Convention PLANNER -2005, Assam Univ., Silchar, 10-11 Nov., 2005 © , Ahmedabad 167 Metadata as a tool to facilitate exchange of information between interoperating systems and interoperability of metadata schemas themselves which can help to facilitate systems interoperability. Abstract: The paper examines the concept of return on investment (ROI) in the context of special libraries. The aim of ROI is to establish a relationship between the special library and its host institution that could be expressed in quantifiable terms and which would satisfy administrators and demonstrate the library’s economic value to the institution. The value of a library to its parent institution is difficult to measure. Many different methods have been used to measure value, including return on investment (ROI), contingent valuation, and other explicit and implicit measures — essentially derived from library services and user satisfaction. This article describes major functions, activities and services of the INMAS library. It briefly touches upon both print and e-resources subscribed by INMAS library. The article outlines activities undertaken by INMAS library which are leading to cost saving and cost recovery, thereby, increasing return on investment (ROI).This article elaborates on strategies used by INMAS library for effective promotion- for increased utilization of its resources, which shall in turn result in increased research output in form of various products and services and a better ROI. Lastly, this article outlines future endeavors of the INMAS library which shall ultimately result in increased for the library. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1648 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The libraries have been posed with a serious challenge to present evidence justifying the value of the services they offer, as well as for planning and decision-making about the future for its cost effectiveness. Attempts have been made to present the issues that can affect the success with which librarians can extend virtual reference services in an academic environment. Virtual reference services is no more complex than the other types of library and information services, may be at the beginning it may take time to use this sort of e-services but in due course of time this would yield fruitful result URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1611 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: As the Internet became an accepted source of electronic information, a variety of information communities have developed metadata to organize these resources to effectively serve their users. So metadata has taken on a more significant role of knowledge representation and data mining. In today's context, where the web contains the collection of massive heterogeneous objects, which need to be unified and linked in a single resource, we are witnessing both the growth of different metadata standards and the attempts to reconcile the common attributes in the existing overlapping standards. The goal is to access relevant information seamlessly, regardless of its type and location. This article addresses different aspects of metadata, the rationale behind it and gives a general picture of Dublin Core metadata elements. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/87 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: One of the key challenges facing information managers today is the need to inter-relate different sources and types of Information, whether it be in an internet search across a range of resources with different formats, data structures and description standards or an ecommerce system that needs to exchange data between proprietary applications in order to complete a transaction. Understanding the structure of the data allows this to occur and metadata is the means by which this happens. Using metadata to record data about Information sources allows an initial assessment of compatibility and provides an avenue for merging information or for exchanging Information between systems. In other wards the concept of “interoperability” has become a major theme for information managers and ultimately for users. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/533 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Metadata, data about data, describes objects of various multimedia content and types. One of the main functions of metadata is aiding in retrieval of the objects that it describes. However, with the emergence of semantic web technologies the role of metadata is changing. Paper discusses some of the important metadata schema. It highlights issues of ‘glut’ by way of a plethora of metadata that are emerging. In the given scenario, it is essential to devise a method for achieving interoperability among similar metadata standards. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1467 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The explosion of information on the Internet and information technology in general has created challenges for libraries to focus on developing more effective ways to meet the information needs of users. One practical approach is through customized portals performing simultaneous database searching. This paper presents a new library portal service used at the Indian Statistical Institute Library at Bangalore (ISIB). The key feature of a library portal is to allow searching across multiple databases without having repeat search. This feature is generally referred to as meta-search, parallel search, broadcast search or federated search. Discussion also includes strategies of local customization and the impact on library management in an electronic environment. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1558 Files in this item: 1
