Abstract: The Information and Comunication Technologies (ICTs) have made a profound impact on the life and work of people. Library and Information is no exception to this phenomenon. Declining library budgets and growing universe of users and documents are forcing us to develop policies and strategies to ensure massive realtime access to quality information in a cost-effective manner. Library consortia is a strategic professional response to obtain the above said mission. This paper is an attempt to map the impact of ICTs on libraries as a metaphor of our documentary heritage, and ascertain professional response to fiscal and technological changes. Particular emphasis has been laid on academic librarires and the Inflibnet initiatives. Description: This is only an Abstract URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/271 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Academic libraries in India have been affected by an uncertain financial environment in which resource buying has been restricted, causing them to look at ways of extending their purchasing capabilities to compensate for reduced budgets. Technological developments, electronic publishing of scholarly journals, emerging of consortia, prizing models of the publishers gives new opportunities for libraries to provide instant access to information. Library consortium is the one of the emerging tool kit for libraries to survive in the e-publishing environment. An attempt has been made to identify the objectives, types, major issues and approach for co nsortia in Indian environment. The paper also highlights some of the important consortia arrangements at International level. The proposed models for academic libraries through different vendors / publisher has been discussed at the end. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/50 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The present approach towards partnership, networking, consortia and resource sharing adopted by Indian libraries need radical changes to evolve responsive partnerships in order to achieve best performance in service. The current practices of journal acquisition in most of the libraries in the colleges and universities in India are print based, in which each library is an island with regard to access of information. Moreover, there is wide disparity in the availability and use of information among different universities and colleges. But, consortia based acquisition and electronic desktop delivery of information can eliminate this gulf and increase the access and use considerably. Thus the difficulty now faced by the students, teachers and scientists in getting academic and research information will be eliminated on achieving full bibliographical control on the information documents available world over. This paper depicts the benefits of library consortia, analyses the present trend in the formation of consortia in India and suggests a new model of library consortia in which all academic institutions and government research organizations could participate. The formation of such a unique consortium under the direction and full support by the Government of India is stressed. The role that can be played by the INFLIBNET Centre of the University Grants Commission in the formation and management of such a consortium is also depicted. The areas of re-defining and re-engineering the operations of the university libraries necessitated by the consortia based electronic information and document delivery services are also discussed. Abstract: Mashup is one of the many new phenomena in the Web 2.0 environment. They are largely experimental, but some of them are very useful, well-designed and very popular. Google Maps is the most popular component of Mashups. Amazon, Yahoo! Maps, and photo-sharing site Flickr are also a source for many of the sites. The libraries have been well adapting to the emerging technologies to integrate contents and services in order to provide innovative services to the users. The paper defines Mashup and discusses its various aspects with specific reference to the libraries. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1165 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: User is the key person in any library. The success of any library depends considerably on how best the system design is based on a close and accurate understanding of the users. The user is not only the important aspect but is also paradoxically a dynamic component of the library. The internet is a highly complex network that interconnects millions of computers around the world. In a medical college hospital campus, all the doctors and students are not able to come to the library to search the library resources, which are available; it may be print materials or online materials or non book materials. So, it is necessary to design/develop their own Intranet microsite or Campus network of the library, which could be connected to the LAN (Local Area Network) and make available to all the network computer terminals of the campus/hospital; this microsite should deliver/give all the facilities available in their library. The Manipal University Health Sciences Library also developed/designed and made access of library microsite for their users. Our study showed that 96.7% of respondents have awareness of Microsite developed by the library; 66.7% of the respondents were accessing the Internet resources through the library microsite and they are satisfied with the library resources. Abstract: In the early days of the Net revolution most of companies launched their Net presence through corporate Websites. They used their websites to show their products and services with significant information content. As websites grew in number it became difficult for customer to locate or search the net for sites of their choice. Search engines thus emerged and went on to become key players, directing millions of surfers to various sites to get online search of their choice. However the phenomenal growth of search engines was accompanied by unprecedented choices opening up for the customer. This phase was marked by the transformation of search engines/directories into portals. Instead of competing on width offered by horizontal portals, players were forced to compete on depth. The libraries did not become aloof from the Net revolution. They also launched portals to attract the specific group of interest. This concept brought paradigm shift in the sense of “right information to right user from approaching relevant information”, “save the time of users from separating irrelevant information”, “educate the users for self search by arranging contents in specific manner”. Abstract: This paper emphasizes the significance, elements and functionality of library portals, the role of librarian as selector and organizer of information on the web. The portal offers the user the ease of searching many sources at once, integrating results from licensed resources and local databases and bibliographical descriptions of digitized material. Equally, the familiar portal interface is an option for searching databases that are unfamiliar to the users. Librarians bring their expertise with content, their knowledge of copyright, their commitment to customer service and their experience in creating customized web-based information delivery systems. Abstract: With the growing acceptance of web portals on university campuses, many librarians are considering building library portals to make their collections accessible to users who expect all knowledge to be obtainable with just a few clicks from inside a web browser. After all, the World Wide Web has become the marketplace for documents, goods, services, and ideas. For many people, especially students, if something is not on the web, it does not exist. This trend is especially challenging for libraries, which are the traditional keepers of knowledge but whose knowledge is largely kept in many millions of books and journalsnot on the web. The idea of a library portal is misdirected. While it is vital that libraries have a presence on university enterprise portals, libraries should build portal pages, portal channels, and portal cameos rather than entire library portals. Abstract: Paper discusses the various indicators of assessing quality of the library services giving emphasis on input processing activities mainly responsible for quality products. Asserting that quality of output primarily based upon quality of input given by the library staff, therefore suggests that more weightage should be given to acquisition, content analysis, professional aptitude, maintenance etc rather than merely measuring the level of users satisfaction . Concludes, endorsing 5th point out of 14 points of Deming to improve constantly and forever the system of production (preparing documents for use) and services applicable to libraries to bring changes in the existing scenario. Abstract: It seems to recall a time when protocols and standards were two different things. In the past couple of years, the craze over new protocols has seemingly breathed new life into library information technology, replacing the doldrums of standards with the hope of new, universally accepted protocols. It must be admitted that to being too young to have been there, but It would be wonder if things felt like this when MARC and Z39.50 were poised to change the world of library automation. MARC and Z39.50? It’s XML and Open URL, and the Open Archives Initiative. In this paper I tried throwing light on ability to search the resources with a single interface. Abstract: The importance of Information and Communication Technologies in distance learning has been acknowledged as an essential component of strengthening LIS education in the remote areas of the north eastern states of India. (Rath). The same could be said of the use of ICT for LIS education in remote areas of Australia and in America. The infrastructure of physical, human and financial resources all attract students to the profession. This reflective essay discusses Robert Stueart’s 1999 challenge to information access in Asia: “One of the most important activities is information society is to maintain a cadre of qualified information professionals”. (Stueart, 1999). Maintaining a cadre of information professionals is also an appropriate challenge to India. Information professionals themselves are the channel of globalization of education because they see the need for standards in computerisation initiatives and promote communities of practice worldwide. Abstract: Content management technologies have been existing to cater to needs like records management and document management. Inclusion of Web-content in library repositories has necessitated current technological tools to be redesigned. A new content management technology focussing on the management of web-content is seen in the light of LIS. For the present paper, the phases of WCM implementation are factually checked against the findings of a pilot survey conducted for select 15 libraries of Mumbai. Survey findings indicate a definite shift in the activities of handling content. WCM features are juxtaposed against these activities to highlight the WCM benefits. Considering the expenses involved, the article suggests on exploring the Open Source Systems by testing the online demos available. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/378 Files in this item: 1
