Abstract: Information retrieval in digital era especially due to non-compatibility between different systems, disparity of interfaces may lead loss of information in information dissemination and affect the precision. Paper emphasized needs of standards to solve interoperability, interconnection issues that adversely affect the success of an Information Retrieval System. ANSI/NISO Z39.50 discussed elaborately with its application, usage, implementation, its relationship with TCP/IP, as well as Information Retrieval, user interface etc that were proved to be essential for successful Information Retrieval System. Abstract: Interoperability refers to the ability of a Digital Library to work cooperatively with other Digital Libraries in an attempt to provide higher quality services to users. There are many approaches to achieve some degree of interoperability and one such approach involves the creation and use of Open Archives. The OAI is an initiative to develop and promote interoperability standards that aim to facilitate the efficient dissemination of content. The OAI Protocol for Metadata Harvesting (OAI-PMH) provides an application-independent interoperability framework based on metadata harvesting. OAI-PMH enables automated distribution of any kind of metadata, which may be aggregated into searchable databases by “harvesting” systems. It has reached version 2.0, intended for stable, production services. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/352 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Digital libraries were viewed as systems providing a community of users with coherent access to a large, organized repository of information and knowledge. A given digital library system should provide a coherent, consistent view of as many of these repositories as possible. From the user’s perspective, to the extent possible, there should appear to be a single digital library system. Users increasingly have access to various types of digital collections and information systems: personal information resources, workgroup and organizational information collections and collaboration environments, and more public digital libraries. The digital library system needs to extend smoothly from personal information resources, workgroup and organizational systems, and out to personal views of the content of more public digital libraries. Abstract: The technological development of the past 25 years, such as the electronic database, online services, CD-ROMs and the introduction of internet has radically transformed the process and access to information through catalogues. AACR2 rules cover the description of and the provision of access points for all library materials. The rules for description are based on the general frame work for the description of library materials the general international standard bibliographical description (ISBD(G)). The transformation of ISBD(G) to AACR2 is one phase. The second phase leads to creation of machine readable metadata. The most popular are Dublin core, UNIMARC, MARC21. Another local library software LIBSYS which is used in Indian libraries has also been used here for presentation of the mapping between different formats to draw conclusions to make them interoperable. As far as metadata interoperability is concerned, the OPAC display, now almost completely dependant on the AACR2 the world over requires minimum data aggregation, mainly the author, title, series, subject, etc. aggregation which are the mandatory fields prescribed by IFLA. Abstract: Today, not only business organisations, but also service organisations eye on enhancing their customer care strategies. Libraries are no exceptions. Library automation has made this task easy. This article examines how a Sri Lankan University Library has managed to cope with the issue. Also, this looks which customer care features Libsys automation software package has and how these could be further developed. Abstract: Invisible Web which is also known as ‘Deep Web’ or ‘Hidden Web’ refer to information content that is ‘invisible’ to conventional search engines. Public information on the invisible web is currently around 500 times larger than the commonly defined World Wide Web. Nearly 550 billion individual documents are available in the invisible web while the surface web has around only one billion documents. It has been estimated that around 2,00,000 invisible web sites exist on the Information Superhighway at present and is the largest growing category of new information on the Internet. The total quality content of the invisible web is also greater than that of the surface web and highly relevant to every information need, market and domain. But, a larger portion of the invisible web is missing from search engines’ results pages. In this context, this paper attempts to characterize the deep web’s content and relevance to information seekers and profile special tools available to mine the invisible web. Abstract: Many libraries in India acquires information sources in different media, one of which is digital media. The digital form enables the information source to be easily copied and transferred over the network. Digital media requires specific modifications in the Indian Copyright Law or altogether different law to ensure that the creator’s rights are protected by fair use of such media. Abstract: Computer networks are a crucial part of organizations. It is one of the fastest growing technological areas and brings benefits virtually to every country in the world. With the interconnection of network to the Internet, the world has truly become a global village where we depend more, on digital materials. So in the present century all digital works need protection because they can be easily copied. For that reason DRM technology has taken place, which is not a single technology or not a single philosophy. It refers to a broad range of technologies and standards. DRM is neither thin nor thick copy right. DRM is potentially a planned technique for absolute protection of works. Thus the present article is intended to highlight few technological aspects of DRM which are essential in the library profession. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1076 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The need to structure knowledge is as important now as it ever has been. This paper has tried to study the ISP knowledge portal to explore how knowledge on various resources and topics in photonics and related areas are organized in the knowledge portal of International School of Photonics, CUSAT. The study revealed that ISP knowledge portal is one of the best portals in the filed. It provides a model for building an effective knowledge portal in other fields. Abstract: Library consortia for purchasing electronic journals became recognized as a vital part of academic information infrastructure at the research community. The biggest challenge that newcomers to the consortium world face is grasping the fact that standard setting is about giving away rights in technology. Leading institutions in North America and Western Europe take a variety of positive measures to promote consortium activities and formed unique consortia of many kinds. On the other hand, a consortium in India is still in a developing stage and struggle to solve problems they face. The factors that have led to the development of consortia are diverse among countries. This paper describes definitions, aim, organizations, internal structures, policies and other characteristics of the UGC-Infonet E-Journal Consortium which is one of the well known consortia for Higher Education in India under the UGC. It will also highlight the characteristics and issues faced by the consortia and the measures taken up to promote consortium activities. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1407 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Paper discusses the need for developing institutional repositories for bringing visibility to their research put and interoperability. States that the contributions of the institutions and their own researchers remain diffused and scattered in various sources hidden to the potential consumers of the institutions themselves, as well inaccessible to the contributors of the research papers. Paper raises certain issues associated with institutional repositories needing professional attention to resolve them. Suggests as to what contents should fall under the purview of the institutional repositories and with what priority. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1137 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Big deal or the consortia site licensing is the most preferred way of e-journal subscription for Indian Consortia be it INDEST or the UGC Infonet. In the big deal model all the journals published by a publisher or hosted by an aggregator on its web site are made available to the consortia members at a so called “highly reduced” price. It has been seen that the librarians throughout the world haves been raising objections to this mode since beginning. There are various concerns which have been identified such as monopoly of the publishers, use of a limited number of titles, effect of citation ranking of journals published by the small publishers and the fear of death of journals published by the developing countries. Though a number of articles have been published on this topic but most of them have been on the qualitative aspects of such deals. There are a few studies that have been conducted on quantitative aspects. In this paper a study of use of Elsevier’s ScienceDirect at IIT Roorkee has been presented which clearly shows that a very limited number of titles are frequently used in the Institute. This data clearly indicates that the Big Deal mode of subscription is not at all in the favour of the consortia. Supports an alternate model for subscription which should be based on the fixed fee access to the limited set of journals which are frequently used and pay for use for the journals which are less frequently used.
