Abstract: Though literature on information and knowledge management is vast, there is much confusion concerning the meaning of these terms. According to the literature review, technology-oriented information management includes data management, information technology management and strategic information technology management. The main emphasis of these approaches is the effective and efficient use of information technology. In contrast, content-oriented approaches focus on information and its use. They can be distinguished in records management, provision of external information, human-centered information management, and information resources management. The reading of the literature on knowledge management reveals that this term is either used synonymously for information management or for the management of work practices with the goal of improving the generation of new knowledge and the sharing of existing knowledge. This article identifies various aspects that are embraced by the terms information and knowledge management. Thus, it should contribute to more terminological clarity and finally improve communication both in science and in professional practice. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/540 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Information Flow refers to the technique in which information is acquired, analyzed, and distributed by Metropolitan Planning Organizations. Information Flow can be studied taking into account three stages of the process such as (i) Accomplishment of Data in Electronic form, (ii) Analysis and Management of Data, and (iii) Distribution of information. The ameliorated telecommunication systems, a convergence of an assortment of technologies such as telecommunication, computer, satellite, microwave etc. have a far-reaching upshot to adopt a changed system of flow of information. Telecommunication technology pooled with Computer technology in this respect is an indispensable medium that transmits information by electromagnetic means. A wide variety of information can be transferred through a telecommunications system, including voice and harmony, still-frame and full-motion pictures, computer files and applications, and telegraphic data. This paper throws light on the information flow using various devices. Description: This is only an Abstract URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/263 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The present study is an attempt to identify cancer institutes and associations’ web sites that provide free information useful in research and scientific endeavors. Thirty seven cancer web sites have been identified by using Google search engine for the study with the site domains .org, .edu, and .ac. This ensures the organization is not a commercial body. Availability of research & review articles, clinical trials, scientific reports, conferences proceedings, and other information of scientific importance in full text form are studied by visiting respective sites. The study reveals that though there are innumerable sites on cancer and information content for cancer patients as well as their relatives, the coverage of free full text scientific information for cancer scientific community is woefully inadequate. Even though the sites are developed and hosted by professional bodies, access to full text scientific literature / information for scientists and clinicians is restricted. Abstract: Subject Gateways provides search facilities of relevant information sources on the Internet and are created, designed, maintained and reviewed by librarians/information professionals and/or subject experts with the aim of providing access to high quality sources of information and contain the full range of subject oriented internet material which negate the possibility of repetition in the search results. The use of traditional cataloguing and classification aims to ensure accurate subject description. Thus the quality input provides a quality output search and it is for the user to decide whether the output is capable to match their requirement. Gateways also give an opportunity to authors/scholars/users to provide an input of information resource through its template, though it is further evaluated and assessed by gateway editors. Selection procedure, collection management policy, scope policy and reviewing the information Gateway has been included in brief. ICSSR is the sponsoring body of the Information Gateway of Social Sciences, thus the paper has been concluded by providing the recommendations for ICSSR. Dhiman, Anil Kumar (INFLIBNET Center, February 2, 2006)[more][less]
Abstract: The present age is Information Age, and the pedagogic implications of this age are that people should learn new skills to use information stored on computers. Libraries and Information Centers have responded by acquiring information technology and encourage computer literacy. The information that is available through libraries, community resources, special interest organizations, media and Internet comes to individuals in unfiltered formats, rising question about its authenticity, validity and reliability. In addition, information available through multiple media poses new challenges for individuals in understanding the landscape of information and to acquire knowledge of how to gather, evaluate and use information in today’s world. Information literacy therefore, is increasingly important in the contemporary environment of rapid technological change and proliferating information resources. It enables learners to master content and extend their investigations, become more self-directed and assume greater control over their own learning. With the advances in Information and Communication technologies (Dhiman, 2001, 2002 & 2003), the traditional concepts of organization, user orientation, bibliographic description and dissemination of information are to be fine-tuned to the new environment by the Library and Information Professionals. So the LIS professionals working in the environment have to face challenges for providing the right information to the right user at the right time. Abstract: In the present information society, the world is changing into global village, classrooms are changing into virtual class rooms and libraries are changing to information centers. Students are more technology oriented and so the whole teaching-learning process. The students are expected to learn beyond the syllabus and teachers should play a role of facilitator. This is due to advent of information and communication technology. Every aspect of education is changed. e-learning, e-resources, etc. are the common words. Everyone in the education system is depend upon the information. As a result of it, we are facing new challenges like information overload, information poverty, etc. To face this challenges the librarians and educationist must think collaboratively to impart information literacy among the students so as to survive in this information age. The teachers should be information literate so that they can implement the information literacy programme in their schools. But there is a need to impart the information literacy skills among the teachers during their pre service teacher education. This paper tries to suggest a model and a draft programme with teaching and learning techniques which will be suitable to impart information literacy skills among the teachers during their pre-service teacher education in India. And it demands collaborative efforts of librarians, teachers, educators, educationists and policy makers. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1630 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Information literacy (IL) which is described as the ability to recognize when information is needed, and to be able to locate and evaluate the appropriate information and use it effectively, have become prerequisite for all levels of education including higher education. Objective of this study is to examine to what extent the IL is practiced in university libraries in Sri Lanka. It studies the effectiveness of existing user education (UE) programs as well as IL programs in 15 national university libraries in Sri Lanka. The survey questionnaire is used as the primary data collection instrument and the findings of the study are discussed in this paper. Study revealed that all the responded university libraries (73%) are conducting UE programs and only 63% out of them have introduced IL programs. However, it was identified that majority of these IL programs are only extensions of existing UE programs and as a result, no proper contribution can be expected by them on the improvement of IL skills among user community. Suggestionsare made to overcome this issue and the study has emphasized the need for a national policyframework on IL skills development. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1639 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Universities are expected to play a vital role in development issues of their countries and beyond as they engage in teaching, learning and research. The world-wide recognition of information as a key resource to the development of economies in the 21st century places even more responsibility on universities as they are looked upon as major consumers and creators of information touching on all sectors of the economy. Their contribution to development therefore largely depends on how applicable the information they generate through research is relevant to the needs of their immediate communities; as well as on the quality of their graduates, and their contribution towards global information reserves. The introduction of Free Primary Education (FPE) by the government of Kenya and its financial support to public secondary school students, coupled with the high demand for university education and high population growth are factors that have led to high enrolments in the country’s universities. On the other hand, the lack of a national policy on school libraries, the general lack of information literacy programmes in universities, high reliance on the lecture method and the reading-for-exams-only culture are inter-related issues that need to be tackled if the country is to benefit from quality teaching, learning and research. Based on brief literature reviews and the personal experiences through involvement of the author as a teacher-librarian and lecturer and Secretary, Kenya Library Association, this paper gives a general picture of information literacy-related activities in Kenyan universities; and efforts by some stakeholders towards encouragement, adoption and implementation of information literacy efforts in universities in Kenya. Suggestions on the way forward are given.Key words: University Libraries - Kenya, URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1636 Files in this item: 1
