Abstract: An attempt has been made in the present study to evaluate the attitudes of faculty members, research scholars and PG students towards the adequacy of infrastructure, resources and quality of IT based services rendered in the university libraries of Karnataka State. In this study, the mode of collection of data, its presentation, analysis, and interpretation is also presented. The data for this study has been collected through two different sets of questionnaires. To make an evaluation of IT based services, it is important to know the views of both the receivers(users) and the providers(facilitators) of services – namely the users and the librarians. Often the providers’/facilitators’ views and opinions are conspicuous, and attempts are made to bring their view points to the surface, hence, this study has distinctly attempted to involve the university librarians as facilitators of information services. The other questionnaire is obviously administered to users who are at the receivers’ end. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/316 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: There are many web-authoring software like FrontPage, Dreamweaver, etc which have been used to develop and maintain the websites. But gradually, it became difficult to maintain and update the websites because of their very dynamic nature and a variety of file formats. Content Management Systems(CMS) evolved as an alternative to such web-authoring tools. A content management system offers a way to manage large amounts of web-based information that escapes the burden of coding all of the information into each page in HTML by hand. Although the rapid proliferation of commercially available content management systems makes it easier to find a vendor that might have right solution, the cost to purchase a commercial CMS application is very high. As an alternative to commercial CMS, open source solutions are a tantalizing option. Though, there are a huge number of open source CMS available in public domain, it is difficult to decide what solution will work best for a particular organization (or library). The author explain on this paper the functional requirements, for novice users, of a CMS and to evaluate a few most popular open source CMSs. Abstract: While searching for information the researcher will encounter many types of resources-books, articles and websites. But all of them may not be suitable for his purpose. The researcher needs to identify only relevant and authentic information which suits his purpose. The information source has to be evaluated in terms of coverage, scope ,intended users, timeliness, authority, objectivity, documentation etc. Though most of the strategies stated above for evaluating the information can be applied to any type of resource, the unfiltered, free-from nature of the web provides unique challenges in determining a website'appropriateness as an information source. Many guidelines and checklists are available on Net for evaluating Internet sources. This paper presents the findings of such a study made to evaluate selected websites to check the validity of information, coverage, currency, appropriateness, links and structure of the website keeping in view certain evaluation criteria.Findings reveal that variations exist among the websites in terms of their structure and content and it is also possible to find out validity of information available on Web by evaluating the resource we want to use. Abstract: Information Communication Technologies (ICT) are undergoing rapid changes. Librarian needs to redesign the structure of their library to meet the changing needs by learning and implementing new practices and technologies. How does one provide excellent library service through digital technologies? What are the expectations of digital library patrons? How do we make library patrons satisfied in this digital era? What are the skills librarians need to possess? These questions are addressed in this articles. The digital librarian acts as guardian of the information superhighway and acts as a symbiotic human-machine guru. Article also highlights the roles and functions of a digital library information retrieval, navigation and browsing. This paper outlines professional skills and technological competencies for the development of library professional staff in order to meet the current and future need of users as well as to survive in a rapidly changing technological environment. Abstract: The features of e-book like model, market collections, developing operating guidelines and enhancing potential strategies, hardware, softwares, and standards need strong strategies, approaches and procedures to support and exchange of scholarly information for research potentiality. The development of e-books and e-publishing has challenged the traditional balance among publishers, authors, book sellers, libraries and information centers in a number of fundamental ways. The spiraling cost of publications including the non-availability of latest printed book, exploration of web technology, networks necessitated the cause of generating the ideas of e-books and more prominently when the publishers and authors found the web as the viable platform for business point of view including academic exploration to promulgate the e-books services through web. This paper throws light on the how the impact of e-books has geared to activate the research potentiality among researchers in the wake of advanced information and communication technology. Abstract: An attempt has been made to determine the present status of familiarity and use of Digital resources. It was felt that use of digital resources is still poor among the medical students of the Universities in the developing countries. This paper presents survey to investigate the familiarity and use of Digital resources by students through online and offline Information Databases of the Central Library, “Central Library Books & Journals Database (CLBJD), and the CD-ROMs databases available in the academic libraries (MUI). The subjects of this study were the students of the Isfahan Medical University. For evaluating study questions and data collection, the questionnaire was distributed to a random sample of 250 students. The result of this survey are presented and discussed in the paper. Abstract: Currently, in Taiwan there is no demonstrable solution for access management to the many heterogeneous electronic resources that academic and university libraries provide for users, such as the full texts of electronic journals and books, electronic databases, among many others. Shibboleth has been developed in U.S.A. and the United Kingdom and has become an emerging solution to the access management of electronic resources in a growing number of developed countries. Our experience in starting a virtual federation by setting up an Identity Provider (IdP) at Academia Sinica and a Service Provider (SP) at the Chinese Geoscience Union (CGU), Taipei, a society which publishes a SCI journal entitled “Terrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences”, as well as request Shibbolethbased service from some participating Shibboleth publishers like Elsevier, Springer and Thomson ISI, can provide valuable experiences to any library or organization wanting to start a Shibboleth federated access management for reference. Abstract: The article describes how federated search helps the users to find resources across library collections. Federated search is essen-tially an umbrella search often utilizing, as far as possible, the search facilities already offered by each library resource. Federated searching, also known as meta searching, broadcast searching, cross searching, and a variety of other names, is the ability to search multiple information resources from a single interface and return an integrated set of results. These targets include the library’s collection of books, software, databases and online public access catalogs. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1599 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: This article provides a brief background on the current state of information search in this highly connected and pervasive internet age. It is followed by an introduction to the federated search engine and its definition. While this article assumes that the role played by federated search engine in searching disparate information has been now quite justified and established, it lays the emphasis on the capabilities of the federated search engines. It does so by listing the functionalities expected from a federated search engine, and higher level explanation of inner workings of the federated search engine. It also lists the advantages and shortcomings of federated search engines. This is followed by the selection criteria of a federated search engine and lastly a list of some of the popular federated search engines available today.
