Abstract: The paper reports the results of a survey conducted to know the collection of e-resources in Karnataka state university libraries. Attempts have been made to know the Internet facilities, procurement of CD-ROM databases and online resources, participation in consortium activities and e-resources accessible through such consortium activities in the university libraries. The paper traces the barriers in collection of e-resources in the university libraries. The university libraries under the study have insufficient number of Internet nodes, low bandwidth, poor collection of CDROM databases and online resources. The scholarly literature accessible under the UGC-Infonet E-Journal Consortium is the only strength of these university libraries, as far as collection of eresources is concerned.] URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1064 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Research is an important activity for the development of scientific and technical knowledge. It is the gateway to the development of theoretical knowledge, practical skills and technical know how in any discipline. Universities are the centers of higher education and research. The libraries attached to the Universities have to deal with the needs of the researchers in various disciplines. It is the responsibility of the University libraries to provide the information requirements of the researchers from time to time. In this paper, the authors have made an attempt to know the attitudes of the research scholars towards electronic resources in the Universities in Karnataka. Survey method using questionnaire as the tool is employed to collect data. The collected data are analysed and interpretation is drawn. Suggestions and findings are presented at the end. Abstract: Knowledge management is the powerful tool for any organizational competitiveness. Knowledge is the heart of the organization. KM enhances productivity, effectiveness and efficiency in the aspect of operations and services. Knowledge is explicit and implicit in nature. This paper deals with knowledge explosion or generation, process and management for effective use of knowledge to end –users. With the introduction of ICT, knowledge has become more dynamic which instantly changes its direction and dimensions. As Library is the heart of any organization, with the introduction of ICT and Digital library concepts, libraries have moved from depository or warehouse to Knowledge centers, which preserve, classify and disseminate knowledge from creator to knowledge seeking community irrespective of location and distance. Abstract: Cryptography has widely been used as a means of information security in today’s electronic world. In addition to e-commerce, e-mail and other applications over the Internet, it has been used in common household items as well. The increased reliance on cryptographic methods has raised several ethical questions of global concern that are closely related to fundamental human rights. Some view it as a boon, as an escape from the oppressive hands of the state while others see it as a way of making the information - poor have to pay for every information and denial of access to essential information. In this paper an attempt has been made to separate out the concepts appropriate to each interpretation. Digital libraries also face quite many ethical problems concerning cryptography that even stand against the principles of a public library system. The problems are related to inequality of access, intellectual property and copyright issues. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/212 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: An attempt has been made in the present study to evaluate the attitudes of faculty members, research scholars and PG students towards the adequacy of infrastructure, resources and quality of IT based services rendered in the university libraries of Karnataka State. In this study, the mode of collection of data, its presentation, analysis, and interpretation is also presented. The data for this study has been collected through two different sets of questionnaires. To make an evaluation of IT based services, it is important to know the views of both the receivers(users) and the providers(facilitators) of services – namely the users and the librarians. Often the providers’/facilitators’ views and opinions are conspicuous, and attempts are made to bring their view points to the surface, hence, this study has distinctly attempted to involve the university librarians as facilitators of information services. The other questionnaire is obviously administered to users who are at the receivers’ end. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/316 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: There are many web-authoring software like FrontPage, Dreamweaver, etc which have been used to develop and maintain the websites. But gradually, it became difficult to maintain and update the websites because of their very dynamic nature and a variety of file formats. Content Management Systems(CMS) evolved as an alternative to such web-authoring tools. A content management system offers a way to manage large amounts of web-based information that escapes the burden of coding all of the information into each page in HTML by hand. Although the rapid proliferation of commercially available content management systems makes it easier to find a vendor that might have right solution, the cost to purchase a commercial CMS application is very high. As an alternative to commercial CMS, open source solutions are a tantalizing option. Though, there are a huge number of open source CMS available in public domain, it is difficult to decide what solution will work best for a particular organization (or library). The author explain on this paper the functional requirements, for novice users, of a CMS and to evaluate a few most popular open source CMSs. Abstract: While searching for information the researcher will encounter many types of resources-books, articles and websites. But all of them may not be suitable for his purpose. The researcher needs to identify only relevant and authentic information which suits his purpose. The information source has to be evaluated in terms of coverage, scope ,intended users, timeliness, authority, objectivity, documentation etc. Though most of the strategies stated above for evaluating the information can be applied to any type of resource, the unfiltered, free-from nature of the web provides unique challenges in determining a website'appropriateness as an information source. Many guidelines and checklists are available on Net for evaluating Internet sources. This paper presents the findings of such a study made to evaluate selected websites to check the validity of information, coverage, currency, appropriateness, links and structure of the website keeping in view certain evaluation criteria.Findings reveal that variations exist among the websites in terms of their structure and content and it is also possible to find out validity of information available on Web by evaluating the resource we want to use. Abstract: Information Communication Technologies (ICT) are undergoing rapid changes. Librarian needs to redesign the structure of their library to meet the changing needs by learning and implementing new practices and technologies. How does one provide excellent library service through digital technologies? What are the expectations of digital library patrons? How do we make library patrons satisfied in this digital era? What are the skills librarians need to possess? These questions are addressed in this articles. The digital librarian acts as guardian of the information superhighway and acts as a symbiotic human-machine guru. Article also highlights the roles and functions of a digital library information retrieval, navigation and browsing. This paper outlines professional skills and technological competencies for the development of library professional staff in order to meet the current and future need of users as well as to survive in a rapidly changing technological environment. Abstract: The features of e-book like model, market collections, developing operating guidelines and enhancing potential strategies, hardware, softwares, and standards need strong strategies, approaches and procedures to support and exchange of scholarly information for research potentiality. The development of e-books and e-publishing has challenged the traditional balance among publishers, authors, book sellers, libraries and information centers in a number of fundamental ways. The spiraling cost of publications including the non-availability of latest printed book, exploration of web technology, networks necessitated the cause of generating the ideas of e-books and more prominently when the publishers and authors found the web as the viable platform for business point of view including academic exploration to promulgate the e-books services through web. This paper throws light on the how the impact of e-books has geared to activate the research potentiality among researchers in the wake of advanced information and communication technology.
