Abstract: New technologies have always been of interest for libraries, both for the potential of increasing the quality of service and for improving efficiency of operations. In the era of globalisation and liberalisation and with the advent of hi-technologies, the whale world has been condensed in a very small frame. With enormous knowledge explosion, the need to quench the thirst of information cannot be over emphasized. Barcode made inventory tracking easier, but they have their disadvantages. For starts each barcode has to be read in individually by the reader. If an entire well stocked information Centre needed to be checked in to a computer, it could mean several hours of work. Furthermore, the basic barcode is just a tag with data printed on it, and this data can’t be updated. Except, of course by sticking another barcode over it. Where Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags come in takes asset tracking to the next level, with smart intelligent tags embedded in the package, the information on the tag can be scanned and updated automatically by readers. RFID married with today’s enterprise resource planning solutions, may soon be the next big thing in information management. The technology provides an automated method to collect product or transaction information. The RFID system works using “smart” tags, with inbuilt silicon chips that store data, a reader that scans information from the tags, and the infrastructure to store and analyse the data. This present paper will give you an understanding of how technology can impact on our libraries. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1100 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is not a new system but the base of this was established way back in 1940s. The credit goes to commercial or business organizations who have explored and implemented RFID to acquire, manage and provide security to their products or items. Information and Communication Technology has transformed the format of information and work culture of libraries. Still libraries are trying to address various problems like qualitative information management, speedy acquisition and dissemination of information and security of information products. This paper gives brief idea about the RFID, its importance in the library system, how it works and describes different components of the RFID technology. It also briefs about tentative budget to establish RFID technology in the library and finally its future in Indian libraries. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/575 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Increased use of software engineering for model analysis, multimedia technology for usability, explicit support for reuse, metrics for project management and an increased use of natural language facilities will allow tomorrows end users to create their own application. The library is the most important resource for students and young engineers who wish to develop professional expertise quickly. This paper proposes two models viz., simulation model for Library Budget and CASE centered library-forecasting model. Models represent reality and simulation imitates it. Simulation is the imitation of the operation of a real world process or systems over time. The paper deals about the purpose of simulation, steps in simulation, CASE tools, and CASE centered library model. Forecasting is employed for the projection of these operations and patterns into the future. The CASE centered forecasting model projected in this paper may be used for the development of an application system to show the potential of shared data base applications or as a foundation for a library management reengineering effort. Abstract: Developing a bibliographical database is not an easy task. While developing it the designer must think about exchange of record, minimum consumption of memory, effective retrieval of the database content, etc. With these concepts in mine, the bibliographical database should be designed and provided mandatory attributes for capturing data. Most of the Information Retrieval Systems are based on keywords of the document and retrieve a list of documents in response to a user’s query. Then the user has to sequentially determine his/her relevant document. A keyword-based retrieval is a simple model that can encounter two major difficulties such as synonymy and polosemy problem. This paper introduces the application of vector based information retrieval technique in bibliographical database for effective retrieval. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1289 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: With the growing amount of information in various domains, retrieval and analysis is the most frequently used operation. Various institutions/organizations generate valuable information in various domains which is queried and analyzed by users for various purposes. Most of the applications performing these tasks are predominantly database driven and tightly coupled with the system. This limits the possibilities of seamless database integration with other sources of knowledge and also their ability to adopt to changes in the information structures. We describe a generic approach comprising a loosely coupled system with an ability to perform complex querying, analysis and seamless integration with other systems, both off line and over Internet. Abstract: Electronic journals unfold their most valuable features when they are inter-linked with other documents, archives and databases. These electronic journals need an archiving system that is based on a global concept. Archiving ensures “continued access indefinitely into the future of records stored in digital electronic form”. Archiving system has to be flexible to adopt the new technological generation. The rapid pace at which technology becomes obsolete makes archiving an extremely expensive undertaking. The librarians are more concerned about the archiving of the electronic journals themselves, or getting access to the archives established by the publishers or the aggregators. This paper focuses on the issues related to the archiving of electronic journals in Physics and Astronomy by the publishers, aggregators and the consortia. Abstract: Preservation of digital material has become a major challenge for library and information professionals these days. Although libraries have been concerned with preserving cultural and intellectual heritage for centuries, it is only in recent years that preservation and conservation have become activities in their own right. Preservation of digital material is more complex because of the dependencies that exist between the information object itself and its technical environment- an environment that is generally created using rapidly obsolete and, therefore, fragile technology. This dependence can be at both the software and the hardware levels. In this sense, digital media present more complex problems than any other media libraries have ever had to face. The present article explores various strategies and methodologies for preserving digital materials and also focuses on the pressing need for libraries to develop strategies and practical action plans to maintain the safety and accessibility of the world’s historical and cultural heritage. Abstract: Libraries, faced with declining budgets, increasing subscription prices have found themselves unable to purchase all publications and materials that their users would generally expect to have. To compensate for this, there is shift to subscribe the journals by other models and methods. Library consortia are one of the most effective means for libraries to subscribe to E-journals. University libraries in India are accessing e-journal under UGC-INFONET E-journal consortium. This facility has also been extended to libraries in North Eastern region. This paper reflects on the growing importance of usage statistics of electronic journals, their increasing use, and in particular universities in North East region It highlights the current usage of various e-resources accessed by the users of different universities located in North East region.
