Abstract: The changing world of librarianship has paved to information highway from the traditionally embarked concept of private world. The adaptation of Information Technology (IT) for data readiness, accessibility and decision support excellence has got into the virtual environment of electronic devices in many libraries. The convergence of computer and communication technologies has linked the human minds worldwide and is trying to cut across the physical barriers. This paper points out the gradual shift-over towards digital info high-tech from traditional rudimentary adherence thus giving rise to fears into the librarians to greater extent. The fears are like phobia to computer exposures, stationary skills, regressive attitude, cognitive factors etc. These are the pressing challenges before the professionals of coming generation to enthuse with information highway. The paper also gives suggestions as to how to overcome the fear and develop knowledge based confidence for high tech absorption of Digitization breaking the barriers of distance. Abstract: ICTs have been adopted by libraries in India as and when they are evolved. The transformation of some traditional libraries into hybrid libraries has been gradual, but with little jerks as well. The paper stresses that ICTs are inevitable for a modern library in a networked global information society. This paper also raises some is sues, particularly the ones concerning human resources, faced by Indian libraries in various stages of transformation. Libraries in India are now faced with issues concerning the most critical resource in management, viz. the human resource. From poorly organised collections managed by non-professionals to modern networked libraries managed by professionals, and libraries falling somewhere between the two extremes, India has all types and levels of libraries. With a large number of libraries still tradit ional, some automated, and only a few having digital collections, manpower issues in case of Indian libraries are diverse and complex. Many university and special libraries have completed to a larger extent their automation processes, and are also networked. This paper highlights the problems faced by librarians in modernising their libraries and digitizing their collections. Public libraries seem to have been left behind as far as adoption of ICTs and modernisation of libraries is concerned. In the absence of clear-cut policy and guidelines for networking, and digitization of libraries, and the provision of electronic library services, library authorities and professionals are facing a lot of problems. The paper points out that in India there is also a contradiction regarding employment scenario in libraries. On the one hand there are many libraries which don't have a qualified professional librarian, and on the other there are inadequate employment opportunities for the very large number of qualified bachelors' and masters' degree holders in library and information science. This situation has implications for teachers in library and information science for updating the syllabi of existing courses and introducing new need based short-term courses to strengthen the existing professionally qualified staff. The paper lays emphasis on developing policy drafts for library and information services in the country in the context of digitization and global electronic village. Particular emphasis must be laid down in the policy on issues concerning manpower. Since government agencies have not done much regarding policy issues, concerned professional associations and organisations should take up the initiative in this regard. The paper concludes with the hope that in the near future, library associations and organisations shall play proactive and assertive roles so that some of the issues currently faced by the profession are sorted out. Abstract: Digitization is an electronic process of converging information from a print format to a digital format. Digital libraries are electronic libraries in which number of geographically distributed users can access the contents of large and diverse repositories of electronic objects. If the future libraries are to survive, they have to be switched over to electronic mode because the information is fast changing and mostly resources are born digitally. The mission is to create a Universal Library which will foster creativity and free access to all human knowledge. Librarian is no more simply a custodian of reading material, but is a collector and evaluator of information. Librarian need to possess knowledge in the field of computer, networking, information analysis, Internet surfing techniques, digital sources, various web sites and organization of data embedded in them. This paper is an attempt to discuss on the issues related to the management, opportunities, advantages and problems of Digital Library. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1286 Files in this item: 1

Tyagi, Om Prakash (INFLIBNET Centre, March NaN, 2001)[more][less]
Abstract: The age of digital technology has revolutionised communications. It is used and enjoyed by all strata of society for business, education, research, and entertainment. Digitisation of information is of particular relevance to business. Organizations must learn how to use information effectively, as competition will keep increasing and profit margins will be under pressure. Information should be stored in a manner that the retrieval is quick and storage safe and permanent. Paper records, books, journals and reports are not very handy as compared to CD-ROMs when it comes to looking for a particular piece of information. It may take, some times, weeks to compile the results, using traditional records. So, we are looking at digitisation as a solution for the coming years. The digital collections must include genre of library materials such as text (books, serials, dissertations/theses), numeric database (statistical/scientific) and special collections (image, audio, video, manuscript etc.). In this paper, the author focuses on the meaning of digitization, benefits of digitization, application area and digitisation process. Parekh, Harsha (INFLIBNET Centre, March NaN, 2001)[more][less]
Abstract: Digital resources are a comparatively new category of information materials in Indian libraries.Although in many ways managing digital resources is similar to handling other resources, thereare significant differences. One major difference lies in the fact that libraries are also increasingly getting involved in the very creation of digital resources.Digital resources can broadly be grouped into two categories – those that are originally created and distributed in digital format and those that are originally created in another format and are later converted into a digital format through a process generally referred to as digitization. Several organizations – libraries, governments, research institutions, and commercial organizations - at local, regional, national and international levels are involved on digitization activities. This paper begins with an understanding of digitization - the meaning and the processes – and then seeks to look at the issues involved in the digitization process from the perspective of libraries. As such, the focus is greater on the digitization of printed materials, rather than objects or sound, film or video recordings. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/79 Files in this item: 1

Bist, Rajender Singh (INFLIBNET Centre, November 9, 2006)[more][less]
Abstract: Manuscripts provide rich, authentic information, facts and evidence for historical, legal and research references. Physical condition of the manuscripts may be decayed due to factors such as climate, insects, acidified paper and old age. A core function of libraries is to maintain and preserve the decaying/ damaged manuscripts for the present as well as use of the future generation. The most significant development in the recent times is to digitize the fragile and rare documents for better access, storage, preservation and dissemination. Digitization is an important aspect of developing digital libraries as it opens up new avenues of access, use, research and preservation of valued information resources. This paper deals with the key issues of digitization at the Gandhi Smriti Library of LBSNAA, which have started digitizing its rare collection with the aim of providing the cost-effective technical solutions for efficient development and delivery of digital services to provide enhanced access to the Library’s collections and other documentary resources, and also to provide shared access to digital collections in cooperation with other institutions. Further, it strives to provide the infrastructure for long-term management of digital material in the Library’s collection through provision of hardware and software systems supporting integrated collection management in a digital environment. Abstract: Digitizatoin in Indian setup is a bigger challange than it appears. This is true in the light of several issues governing the process. Some of these includes, monetory factors, buraucratic setup, absence of the policy-frame, unavailability of the skilled labour, and above all the absence of the environmental in which this needs to be carried out. Still to creat difinit space, in this age of Information Communication and Technology (ICT), Govt. of India in their own way, through the support of its ancillary bodies is trying their best to creat a niche for their users, so that they could stay in the race in this fast changing and growing world of Information Technology.
