Abstract: The loss of monopoly status, the rapid growth in the quantity of information, and the fact that information can now be digitized and delivered electronically necessitates that libraries combine their efforts in providing a range of new services through cooperative electronic networks. This is with a view to remaining relevant in spite of the serious reduction in funding coupled with increasing costs of resources. This paper, through a review of literature and visits to websites, identifies five well-established cooperative electronic networks in Southern Africa. The paper discusses their areas of cooperation and reports benefits to member institutions. The paper concludes that cooperative utilization of electronic networks is the most practical approach to providing seamless access to electronic information resources by academic libraries in the digital age. However, Internet connectivity and donor support are essential, for such consortia to be sustainable. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/203 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The article addresses activities that involve some of the exclusive rights of copyright holders; the right to make copies, to display or perform copyright works, and in some cases to distribute works; and the copyright law’s exemptions from liability for fair use and for certain library copying. Copyright is legally complicated, controversial, subject to a number of misunderstandings and generally not fully understood even by the librarians whose daily tasks include administering it. To better understand the current status of copyright and its impact on libraries the notion of copyright is briefly outlines, along with what exactly copyright is. Libraries and academic institutions can also influence publishers to adjust their present copyright policies with regard to the reuse of published articles. The expectation is that there will be many digital libraries, most of which will have specialized collections and will be internet worked together in a way loosely resembling today’s Internet. Most digital library project planners are aware there are intellectual property issues that must be resolved in order to successfully deploy their libraries. Some proposals for digital library projects express intent to resolve intellectual property issues as part of the overall plan for the library. Abstract: This paper describes the growth of the Internet resources and mentions that the major challenge for the information professional is how to control the growing electronic information, how to evaluate this information to separate the worthwhile information from the trash and how to organize this information. With the development of the Internet, a new pattern of organization of information emerged where electronic documents are linked and arranged in the spatial order instead of traditional hierarchical order of arrangement of information. Moreover, the information is now directly accessible to users over a network of computers. Collecting the most relevant and significant free flowing Internet information and organizing it into a virtual library will facilitate most convenient information access to user communities. This paper highlights the problems faced and lessons learnt from the ‘Gyan Tawi’ virtual library project undertaken by the authors. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/339 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: A survey of library and information centres of 12 institutions which include 3 Engineering colleges, 4 Research Centres and 5 Software companies was conducted. While investigating creation and management of digital resources as well as conventional resources, it was observed that engineering colleges have interactive classroom type of learning and therefore the libraries have mainly textbooks/reference books, where as in software companies, information was available in the web based form. It was also observed that software companies were establishing Documentation/Resources centres. In order to interact more effectively to convert information into solutions and useful products via knowledge, it is suggested that libraries/information centres should play an active role in this process. Research institutions and engineering colleges can also follow the learning and skill development process followed by IT companies.
