Abstract: The paper highlights on Parija Library, the Central Library of Utkal University of Orissa in relation to possible structural differentiation in the era of library automation. A critical analysis of internal and external structure of the library and states the condition of Parija Library structure before automation. Discusses about the state of the art report of automation of the library. Analyses possible external and internal restructuring of the library by dividing the whole work into different functional sections necessary in an automated environment. Provides some suggestions towards library automation in the lib rary. Concludes with the remarks that in near future Parija Library will be restructured to be a hybrid library instead of a fully automated library. Abstract: Electronic publishing has been revolutionizing the format of the recorded knowledge. Electronic information services are attracting reader’s attention in today’s network environment. This changing scenario in library environment has arisen for the need and use of e-journals along with print version. Electronic journals (e-journals) bring new challenges before the library and information professionals to give full text access to scholarly publications both in print and electronic version to its end users. The aim of this paper is to identify various issues relating to access and bibliographic control of e-journals, access management problems, policy issues, and development of e-journals consortium approach to subscribe scholarly peer reviewed journals for their library users in network environment. It also describes a brief account of UGC-INFONET E-Journals Consortium, INDEST, FORSA, and other consortium for providing access to scholarly journals to the end users of universities and institutions of higher learning for their R& D activities URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1186 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The presentation demonstrates cooperative approaches in the field of digital library development in Germany from the perspective of Bochum University Library. It demonstrates the integrated OPAC, the regional union catalog, a search engine for national/international catalog resources, solutions for accessing international periodicals titles in printed and in electronic form, a database of databases, a regional digital library and further relevant national initiatives. The paper argues for teaching information competence, for integrating e-learning and e-publishing into the library’s information architecture and for international cooperation to further enhance information products and services. Abstract: This paper introduce the structure and application theorem of the RFID system, discuss application models and issues when implement the RFID system. Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems have been used in libraries. These applications can lead to significant savings in staff costs, enhance service, prevent book theft and easy to stock verification, provide a constant update of library collections, holding management, but also attain real-time services. Due to the issues about reliability, insufficient, interfere with noise, cost and without killer application, therefore major library only experiment with RFID for holding management. RFID provided with these characters of batch access, storage mass data, and reprogram that were barcode cannot archive. Integrate both parent and holding with functions of RFID to extend various application. Just replace barcode and magnetic strip then archive there advantages for book identification, for the sorting and conveying of library books and AV materials, not only realize precise. The most important issue is that libraries can use nonproprietary systems today because the new generation of RFID chips with the ISO standard 15693 is available. Abstract: With the advent of scientific and technological communication changers are being brought about by the Internet through global connectivity of computers and development of toosl and techniques for information storage and access. Discusses the needs of Internet based information systems and services to Univesity Library. Functional processes have been discussed so as to facilitate in understanding the features of Internet. After a brief overview of Internet technology, a brief description of experiences at K K Handiqui Library towards the development of the system has been described with special reference to NE region. Abstract: The paper attempts to measure the level and status of best library practices and services of university library systems amidst drastic and dramatic changes in the global information environment. Describes that dynamic changes in the environment upset the static balances in the users, provides services, products and consultations. The library paradigm is shifting from storehouse model of information provision to “access” or “Gateway” model. Emphasizes that some sort of intervention is needed to put the same in order and bring equilibrium between the users and providers. Also describes that TQM is an intervention to bring radical changes in the system. With that aim in mind this paper examines and ausits the strengths and weaknesses of nine university libraries through TQM. Conceptualises the term TQM and reengineering in the context of library and information services. Points out that the aim of TQM and reengineering in the context of university libraries is to provide local and global information as a unified transaction from the same terminal. The induction of IT in all spheres of human activities have forced the university libraries to attain require competencies and information infrastructure to interface the problems, challenges opportunities and impending threats. Information management of this sort is nothing but application of information technology (IT) in all house keeping, networking, resource sharing and other advanced information handling activities. To cope with the changing needs of information the forms of information resources are also changing at a fast pace that is clearly visible from the long journey from ‘shruti’in vedic age to the Internet and digital resources. Library literature also reveals that convergence of print and digital technology is necessary condition for qualitative library services. To that end an attempt is made to measure that level of IT application with regard to forms of reading material, forms of periodicals, hardware and software facilities initiation of computerisation, status of housekeeping operations, retrieval services, application in library administration and management (MIS), size of in-house databases, and access to major networks and their services, particularly the use of Internet based services in all the nine university libraries under study. This is a sort of auditing of the existing scenario. Also suggests measures to reengineer the library management, structure, organisation, services, information infrastructure, and competencies to cope with the situation. Abstract: This paper describes about the usefulness and advantage of Internet in day-to-day life, impact of Internet on the library and information services etc. and explains the aims and objectives of the present survey on the usage of Internet in Barak Valley, methodology used etc. The author highlights the use of Internet in this region is in nascent stage and it has become important to make people of this valley aware for the use of Internet and regarding its potential for having enormous resources of information which can be search instantly provided the minimum facility for Internet access is available. The survey results also reveals the users communities of different strata, use of Internet from personal connectivity or from Internet café or office, or academic institutions, types of connectivity for Internet account subscription, place and time for Internet search, time slot for Internet connectivity, use of Internet tools and services, mostly used search engines for Internet access, use of browsers for Internet search, rate of Internet access from Internet café etc. Besides above aspects, the final part of the paper describes the role of Internet in library and information services, problems of getting Internet connectivity, and some suggestions for making people aware for the use of Internet and popularise the use of Internet among the users communities by arranging short term training programme by Computer Institutions, Regional Engineering College(REC), Assam University and other private Institutions URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/440 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Library plays a pivotal role in ensuring the success of higher degree of research in the university environment. Information technology has revolutionized the information handling activities in the academic libraries during the past few years. The Information Society demands that all the relevant technologies; that are involved in information processing, consolidation, repackaging and retrieval be merged so as to evolve an integrated system; capable of providing diversified services. In this direction the automation of individual university libraries is a first step, rather a pre-requisite for the development of such an integrated university library and information system. In this research study an attempt has been made to study the automation and networking of universities in India and discuss the need for an integrated information system and the components of integrated information system. Abstract: Evaluating the effectiveness of libraries is the need of the day. In order to keep up with current trends, libraries must constantly evaluate its services. Evaluating through user is result based because users can suggest effective measures to improve the existing services/facilities in libraries A survey in the form of questionnaire has been done among the students and research scholars of Guru Nanak Dev University. About 120 questionnaire were distributed to users and received back 111 questionnaire. Among these were 61 male and 50 women. This study will help to improve the library status.
