Abstract: Preservation of digital material has become a major challenge for library and information professionals these days. Although libraries have been concerned with preserving cultural and intellectual heritage for centuries, it is only in recent years that preservation and conservation have become activities in their own right. Preservation of digital material is more complex because of the dependencies that exist between the information object itself and its technical environment- an environment that is generally created using rapidly obsolete and, therefore, fragile technology. This dependence can be at both the software and the hardware levels. In this sense, digital media present more complex problems than any other media libraries have ever had to face. The present article explores various strategies and methodologies for preserving digital materials and also focuses on the pressing need for libraries to develop strategies and practical action plans to maintain the safety and accessibility of the world’s historical and cultural heritage. Abstract: As a means for improving access and for preserving the contents for posterity, a proposal for developing a digital library of Indian Library and Information Science journals is attempted in this paper. A brief about the purposes, functions, and tasks involved in digital library development is discussed. Around 29 journals are identified for digitising, by considering the style and coverage of articles published in them from those listed as from India in Ulrichs, and by making a survey of journals published. Since digitisation and digital library development are stupendous tasks involving computer and communications infrastructure, and considerable specialized human skill, institutions like INSDOC, DRTC, NCSI, DELNET and INFLIBNET are identified to host this decentralised digital library. To have the state of affairs in the national level, two case studies of Current Science online and the recent venture by NISSAT to host their Newsletter, Information Today and Tomorrow on Tripod Server is presented. The need for proper formats like PDF, as the initiatives discussed are resorting to multiple formats of html, gif and jpg to deal with text and figures, is stressed. Since some of the journals have a collection of over 4 decades and in all probability old issues in electronic form may not be available, scanning and CD archiving of old issues is suggested with web access to the latest volumes, may be 5-10 years to begin with. Problems and prospects of how the copyrights are transferred to the developer, how the contents are accessed, security mechanisms, sponsorships needed to host it as a free facility permitting unhindered access, and the unresolvable problem of Internet bandwidth demands are highlighted. Abstract: For several decades, preservation specialists have voiced concern over preservation of our cultural heritage in electronic form. Digital information is no less important than its analogue counterpart. Both require efforts to preserve the wealth that they contain. But, because electronic formats are mo re fragile and rely on technology that is constantly changing, the decisions that must be made about preservation must be considered sooner rather than later. It is in this context, that, this paper explores the issues surrounding the preservation of digital information and throws light on proposed strategies for digital longevity. This paper concludes that the need of hour is to create and develop valid documents in standard formats and adopt suitable methods to preserve data in digital format. Abstract: Libraries, archives, and museums play a critical role in organizing, preserving, and providing access to the cultural and historical resources of society. Digital technologies are used increasingly for information production, distribution, and storage. The institutions that have traditionally assumed responsibility for preserving information face technical, organizational, resource, and legal challenges in taking on the preservation of digital holdings. Maintenance will be critical to digital libraries; especially those who promote broad access to diverse, informal materials. If ignored, maintenance issues within the digital library, especially those relating to its materials will threaten its usefulness and even its long-term viability. We perceive the maintenance problem to be both technical and institutional, and this paper considers the preservation and maintenance of the digital library. The paper examines collection maintenance from several vantage points, including software architecture and the type of collection. The paper ends with an examination of potential technical solutions. Abstract: Now-a-days, while a mature system of preservation and conservation (PAC) technology and methodology exists world wide to achieve the systematic PAC of world’s cultural heritage, the PAC programs of Bangladesh National Archives (the custodian of Bangladesh Government’s records) have excluded the same provisions to sustain the usable life of it’s resources. In this circumstance, this study seeks to articulate the current PAC status of archives in Bangladesh National Archives, and examine the barriers that have hindered the development of fullfledged PAC program for them. Finally some recommendations have been put forward at the consideration of Bangladesh National Archives so that it can employ the minimum technologies for proper care of its resources and become gradually able to adopt latest technologies for the preservation of manual archives together with the development of a national digital repository of archives. Abstract: Much of what a man is pertains to his imagination. Indeed, imaginary are his hopes, his intentions, his ideas of himself. People dream of their lives and live on their dreams. The dividing line between living and dreaming is not always clear. Films are collective dream of society. They provide society with mythologies or patterns of behaviour. However, the mass appeal of the movies is a clear indication that most people today respond in one way or another to the dream like fantasies projected on the screen. It is necessary to grasp the significance of the preservation of movies in the life of the people. Preservation of cinema is no doubt the issue that haunts cinema preservationist, archivist librarians at the moment. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/999 Files in this item: 1
