Abstract: Information Literacy warrants acknowledging the documents cited for writing articles, research papers, term papers and assignments. Those who copy/use another person’s ideas illegally are now known in the LIS circle as ‘Plague Patients’. In order to be free from ‘Plague’ the academic scan use any plagiarism detection tool available. This will help to avoid unintentional duplication of information as well. Plagiarism detection tools are useful to the academic community to detect plagiarism of others and avoid such unlawful activity. Abstract: This article aims to introduce LIS professionals to plagiarism, its types, some famous cases and the numerous library web sites devoted to this important issue. Plagiarism by students and researchers in academic and research institutions is an old but ever growing problem. The proliferation of paper mills, full text databases, and World Wide Web pages has made plagiarism a bigger problem in academia. The easy availability of electronic information through Internet creates a challenge for librarians, who must be well informed not only to detect and deter plagiarism, but also to educate their users about its ill effects. This article also enumerates reasons for increase in plagiarism cases, how to avoid plagiarism, do’s and don’ts of plagiarism, and finally prevention and punishment for plagiarism. Use of plagiarism detection tools can not only deter but also assist faculty to combat this form of academic dishonesty. In this article various anti-plagiarism tools have been enumerated and the advantages and disadvantages of using these automated texts matching software’s are discussed and analyzed in brief. Abstract: Plagiarism is an important ethical issue, but many researchers are still not aware of its seriousness. It is a general observation that plagiarism implies just copying or borrowing another’s work and original ideas. Terms such as ‘copying’ and ‘borrowing’ can misguide readers from the seriousness of this cognizable offense and lead them towards copyright violations. Both the teacher/guide and the librarian can play key role in reducing plagiarism by guiding students on how to use and cite proper sources of information through information literacy programs. This paper discusses the issue of plagiarism along with examples from the field of Arts and Humanities, and anti-plagiarism initiatives taken in India. The author suggests that to some extent plagiarism can be avoided with an information literacy programme, and this paper attempts to present information on this literacy framework.
