Abstract: Libraries, faced with declining budgets, increasing subscription prices have found themselves unable to purchase all publications and materials that their users would generally expect to have. To compensate for this, there is shift to subscribe the journals by other models and methods. Library consortia are one of the most effective means for libraries to subscribe to E-journals. University libraries in India are accessing e-journal under UGC-INFONET E-journal consortium. This facility has also been extended to libraries in North Eastern region. This paper reflects on the growing importance of usage statistics of electronic journals, their increasing use, and in particular universities in North East region It highlights the current usage of various e-resources accessed by the users of different universities located in North East region. Abstract: ICT is playing a major role in the all round development of society. Recent developments in the technologies have brought changes in the modes and methods of information, storage, retrieval and transmission. The Internet and web technology has open new dimension to the information systems. Internet, www, web 2.0 etc. has brought a major revolution on the library and information centres also to have access to different information sources and disseminate to the users in the era of information explosion. The paper mainly discusses about the importance of UGC-Infonet Digital Library Consortia for the libraries in the digital wor URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1291 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: In the Academic and research libraries, the long-term preservation and management of digital collections is the most important issue. In certain ways, digital materials are incredibly fragile, dependent for their continued utility upon technologies that undergo rapid and continual change. Keeping and managing the e-journal resources accessible for use by future generations will require conscious effort and continual investment. No library is self sufficient to purchase all the books, Journals and other library documents with in their library budget. So customers belonging to different academic institutions or university may purchase e-journals and sharing its cost through consortia. This paper explains the terms and definitions of Electronic Journals (e-journals), followed by the aims and objectives of the e-journal purchase and management. Also the issues in archiving and preserving the back issues of the e-journals, the initiatives taken in archiving them and the role of e-journal agents in purchasing and managing them are discussed. The purchase and management of e-journals through Consortia and the various consortium efforts taken in India with special reference to INDEST consortia also have been explained in this paper. Abstract: Interoperability is a key issue for resource discovery in a library consortia environment. Interoperability is a concept that addresses the extend to which different types of computers, networks, operating systems and applications work together effectively to exchange information in a useful and meaningful manner. The technology enabled library consortia environment is heterogeneous, it hosts many different technologies, various data, multiple applications and other networked resources. There are several emerging standards, which have been developed to facilitate the interchange of data in a distributed environment. Such standards make it possible to perform seamless searches across several distributed resources, which have been implemented on different platforms. Z39.50 standard is becoming an important strategic tool for libraries and other information organizations. The use of Z39.50 can enhance resource sharing by providing a single interface to search multiple information resources. This paper discusses about the z39.50 standard, various components of z39.50 system and its applications in the library consortia environment. Abstract: This article explores the possibilities of establishing Management and Engineering library consortia of two western Indian states - Gujarat and Maharashtra. It gives an overview of the current status of management and Engineering libraries of the region and examines the possibilities of building up information sharing system, which is of great importance and central to the formation of any consortia. Proposals are made here for a model of library consortia of the 21st century in two western states of India. It focuses on the joint purchase of the resources by IIT Mumbai, IIM Ahmedabad and other engineering and management institute libraries of the region. The theoretical and practical advantages and disadvantages of this form of collaborative approach between management and engineering libraries are described. Abstract: University Libraries, with the dawn of Internet era, are compelled to provide relevant information essential to its end users within a short span of time either from its in-house holdings or from resources available in other libraries. This could be made possible only by way of Library Consortia (LC). This paper discusses the planning of LC among the major Campus Libraries of University of Madras. It identifies the need, prerequisites, problems and solutions involved in consortia formation. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/194 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The emerging Information Technologies have brought many changes in libraries. These technologies have facilitated LIS professionals to work together to acquire and share library collection and provide digital library services to the user community. Increase of the literature in all subjects and shrinking of the library budget made the libraries depend upon each other. This leads to library cooperation, resource sharing and networking. Now the more accepted system of resource sharing is library consortia. Consortia approach is one of the many ways of maintaining cooperation and coordination among the libraries and in fact it has emerged as the ‘state of the art’ in library cooperation in recent years. The online databases; electronic journals are facilitate the formation of consortia among the libraries. This paper highlights the past and existing resource sharing and networking status of Bangladesh. In this paper the authors also depict the benefits of library consortia and try to provide some recommendations for the formation of library consortia in Bangladesh.
