Abstract: Digital resource building , Intranet online services and Internet browsing are gaining momentum in technical library services during last few years in order to supplement the modern library services, specifically in the area of research and development activities in different parts of our country, and so is the case with Central Library of Indian Institute Of Technology (I.I.T) at Kharagpur. I.I.T. Kharagpur, being a premier, large and diversified technical institute in the field of science and technology, is always at the fore front of adopting modern practices for providing new kind of services to its community. Annexing Electronic Library (EL) in the year 1995, Central Library , I.I.T. Kharagpur , since then in a continuous process, started acquiring various digitized commercial databases and also applied all other possible means to build up its digitized document collection and services thereof. This paper presents an image of experiences gathered by the ‘Author’ in augmenting digitized resources and making newer services available thereof to meet the changing needs of the users, focusing on computer based literature search services, electronic SDI, and the like. Author, being an experienced library professional, starts this paper with an introduction to a panoramic view of to-day’s library system. He, proceeds further to give a brief account of traditional library services, followed by ,the salient features of the Electronic Library at I.I.T. Kharagpur including collection of digital resources in their stock, unfolding the scope and coverage in each case, such as source of origin, the search and retrieval software, the vendor details, cost of the database and the computer platform used . Further to this ‘Author’ tries to give reference to the in-house digitized information creation by way of Homepage development and its world wide accessibility through Internet ; creation of web documents through MHRD(Ministry of Human Resource Development) project grant (i.e Archives on Technical Education) . Finally ‘Author’ concludes this paper with his optimistic idea of emergence of hybrid library system in coming days to maintain parallel collection of documents both in print media as well as in digitized format to supplement and complement the gap in formation need of the users at large. Abstract: In the present era of Information Technology ( IT ), extensive efforts are made for the resource sharing activities at various levels. Resource sharing through networks is more popular in the area of Library and Information Services (LIS). Activities of resource sharing are increasing and more effective and efficient services are provided to the user community with the help of IT. Networks play an important role in LIS and help in achieving the economy in dissemination of information. Internet has proved to be a boon and intranets are gaining importance in sharing the organisational resources. The present paper deals wit h a case study of establishment of intranet at NCL (National Chemical Laboratory) and benefits acquired by the staff of the organisation. Abstract: ‘Electronic book’, a term coined by Van Dam of Brown University during the 1960s, is very popular today across the globe. The e-publishing phenomenon that began in the 1960s paved the way for the development of electronic versions of printed books which is known as e-Books. E-Book is nothing but a book in electronic form. We can download thousands of free e-Books from the Internet and nowadays, most of the world renowned Science, Technology and Medicine (STM) publishers provide perpetual access to the e-Books published by them under one time subscription basis. Abstract: Application of ICT in libraries has become inevitable in an era of information explosion and widespread use of digital information resources. Effective application of ICT in libraries helps in performing their operations and services most efficiently. The modernization of libraries and information centers enabled information transfer and access, meeting objectives and there by establishes a network of libraries and information centres. This initiative saw a major shift in resource development, resource sharing and their utilization at various levels. They subscribe to e-journals, CD-ROM databases, online databases, web-based resources, and a variety of other electronic resources. They participate in library consortia and build digital libraries. Abstract: User is the key person in any library. The success of any library depends considerably on how best the system design is based on a close and accurate understanding of the users. The user is not only the important aspect but is also paradoxically a dynamic component of the library. The internet is a highly complex network that interconnects millions of computers around the world. In a medical college hospital campus, all the doctors and students are not able to come to the library to search the library resources, which are available; it may be print materials or online materials or non book materials. So, it is necessary to design/develop their own Intranet microsite or Campus network of the library, which could be connected to the LAN (Local Area Network) and make available to all the network computer terminals of the campus/hospital; this microsite should deliver/give all the facilities available in their library. The Manipal University Health Sciences Library also developed/designed and made access of library microsite for their users. Our study showed that 96.7% of respondents have awareness of Microsite developed by the library; 66.7% of the respondents were accessing the Internet resources through the library microsite and they are satisfied with the library resources. Abstract: Information Technology (IT) is the buzzword now-a days. It has brought out fundamental changes in functioning of libraries and the services they provide to the users. Today, in the age of Information Technology, we have the concept of ‘Using Information from Digital and Network Libraries’. For using information from digital libraries, we need speed creativity, ability to retain people and security. All these requirements can be met by Internet and an Intranet. It means that, today, the role and importance of these two buzzwords not only in libraries/organizations but for each human being is very high. Internet should reach to every man, woman and child. In my opinion, therefore, a new slogan should be coined as “Roti, Kapda, Makan aur Internet !”. This paper describes briefly Internet, Intranet, their differences, and their role and applications in an educational organization and particularly in digital libraries and network security. Abstract: Web 2.0 technologies provide opportunities in various ways to add value to e-services to the world. This term Web 2.0 is widely used to cover a lot of different things especially online on the Internet. These push technologies open new challenges for Library applications too. These powerful e-services reflecting the 2.0 movement integrate dissimilar data to make it more focused for user needs, integrate data within specific user tasks, facilitate collaboration and team use of information, and allow creation of new information and value by users online. However, RSS is one of the easiest and most seamless ways to connect and be informed. RSS (Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication) is basically a format to deliver updated Web content. This paper describes the implementation of RSS 2.0 feed into an online information Gateway in a local Intranet environment thoroughly. Implementation of RSS feed provides news and information merely not static but also with a click. This paper highlights the features and technologies being used for implementation in a closed intranet environment. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1052 Files in this item: 1
