Abstract: The idea of converting library materials into digital format for creating digital collections has advanced rapidly in the last few years, thus leading to the concept of a digital library. A digital library is a library that contains materials in digitized form or access to internal or external digital resources. Digital information resources include not only rapidly growing collection of electronic full text resources, but also images, video, sound, and even objects of virtual reality. The most important component of a digital library is digital collection it holds or has access to. A digital library can have a wide range of resources. A digital library is not a single entity although it may have digital contents created in-hourse or acquired in digital formats stored locally on servers. A digital library may also act a portal site providing access to digital collections held elsewhere. The digital imaging technology offers a number of choices that can be adopted to translate from print to digital. Digital conversion process includes Document, Data Capture, Data Processing, Storage, Indexing and retrieval. Dublin Core standard is adopted internationally to create Meta data of digital resources. The advent of the Internet acted as catalyst for Digital Library initiatives. Digital library environment is the context of rapidly charging computer and communication technology. This paper explains digitization methods, process of digitization and tools required for digitization. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1352 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: This paper describes the development of a catalogue of a digitized collection of costumes. By evaluating and analyzing the collection and evaluate how well existing metadata formats can be applied to a costume collection. The desired metadata elements shown here, selected from the existing Metadata elements and try to fit the Costume data into it. Further it can be researched by taking selected samples and actual metadata treatments to be created for these selected samples using (1) American Cataloguing Rules (AACR in) use with USMARC formats (2) the Dublin Core set of Elements , and (3) the Visual Resources Association (VRA) Core Categories for Visual Resources. Comparison and analysis of the formats will be resulted in the selection with additional metadata elements, if require. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/347 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to describe about the Dublin Core Metadata elements, its significance, as the latest emerging International Standard of cataloguing of books, articles, videos and World Wide Web Resources. A candid discussion and general guideline is provided for the digital library professionals to manage electronic resources with the help of 16 DC metadata elements. This paper at least answers some primarily questions like “What are DC metadata elements?” “What are its characteristics?” “Why they are important and how it is becoming a techno-savvy approach of traditional cataloguing in current scenario?” The paper also examines the relationship between metadata and traditional cataloguing. The main steps for cataloging web resources using Sixteen Dublin Core Metadata elements are explained, and a worksheet is also provided to create DC metadata. DC metadata elements are valuable add-ons for digital library. The overview of Dublin core metadata cannot be complete in such small paper, therefore author limit herself to the most prominent technologies available. However, following the pointers given readers can easily find more information. The paper is of particular value for newcomers in this area. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1228 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: In present scenario, the Internet resources have become indispensable part of library and information services. Identification, selection and cataloguing of the Internet resources, is a big question of the time. Keeping this fact in mind, it is tried to analyze the characteristics and idiosyncrasies of Internet resources, from the cataloguing point of view. Further more, the emerging format for cataloguing of Internet resources “Dublin Core Metadata Element Set” is discussed in details. Abstract: Discusses the changing horizon of modern librarianship. State the digital technology influences the entire librarianship. The Web and Internet revolutionizes the librarianship requiring the necessary development to develop human resources to fit in the new environment. The present trend demands more from the traditional library professional. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/975 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: As the Internet became an accepted source of electronic information, a variety of information communities have developed metadata to organize these resources to effectively serve their users. So metadata has taken on a more significant role of knowledge representation and data mining. In today's context, where the web contains the collection of massive heterogeneous objects, which need to be unified and linked in a single resource, we are witnessing both the growth of different metadata standards and the attempts to reconcile the common attributes in the existing overlapping standards. The goal is to access relevant information seamlessly, regardless of its type and location. This article addresses different aspects of metadata, the rationale behind it and gives a general picture of Dublin Core metadata elements. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/87 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: One of the key challenges facing information managers today is the need to inter-relate different sources and types of Information, whether it be in an internet search across a range of resources with different formats, data structures and description standards or an ecommerce system that needs to exchange data between proprietary applications in order to complete a transaction. Understanding the structure of the data allows this to occur and metadata is the means by which this happens. Using metadata to record data about Information sources allows an initial assessment of compatibility and provides an avenue for merging information or for exchanging Information between systems. In other wards the concept of “interoperability” has become a major theme for information managers and ultimately for users. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/533 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The paper discusses the Open Access Initiatives for global access, repository, preservation, and organized management of networked information services in a distributed environment where both the users and resources are at varied locations. The paper highlights various initiatives of Institutional Repositories and Digital Library in the country. The Paper also discusses the necessity of DSpace Digital Library Software for Digital Library Initiatives and OAI-PMH (Open Archives Initiative Protocol for Metadata Harvesting) in Open Archives Initiative. Abstract: This paper introduces the concept of deficiencies in html and advocates that xml can be a substitute of html for its advantages. Being the web standard, it also accomplishes its application to the library documents as a metatag descriptor. The paper explains this through an example of XML, DTD, CSS, HTML files with few catalogue fields as descriptors. It also focuses on the various recommendations brought by RDF and Dublin Core in the development of metadata. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/85 Files in this item: 1
