Abstract: Digitization has immense potential to store, preserve, disseminate and redistribute cultural materials, if the materials are captured in a bit stream format so as to enable to access through network for learning and understanding the history and culture of a civic society. Generally these materials are stored in museums or in libraries, but they can be spread over the globe and with the spread of the Internet, such contents can be made available to any corner of the world. Universal access implicitly assumes a largely unidirectional flow of information from the developed world to the developing world but the latter is often richer in traditional wisdom, crafts, and cultural artifacts: digital technologies have the potential to preserve that heritage and make it accessible. For developing an Image Repository for photographs of Ancient cultural material by using the advanced digital technology is a challenge, which include description of the photographs of Indian cultural Heritage Materials, Creating Metadata from the sample, Mapping the created metadata with Dublin Core, Developing an Image Repository System using Digital Library open source software etc. This paper is the result of the case study of such an attempt by the authors on exploring Open Source Digital Library Software, DSpace, for preserving the cultural heritage materials. Abstract: Building an Institutional Repository has twin objectives. It servers as a digital archive of the total research output created by the academic community of an institute. It makes freely accessible over the internet this intellectual output to all those who are interested in it, thereby promoting the knowledge development. TIFR too is therefore planning to build its Institutional Repository and as a prelude to this has undertaken a pilot project. This paper discusses some of the details of this initiative. Abstract: Paper deals with open source institutional repository software specially DSpace. After defining the terms, it discusses implementation of DSpace as an institutional repositories. DSpace has developed a model that allows users to use the system, submit and use content, and administrators can organize and configure the system. In order to be more usable to different types of users, the software provides a configurable submission and workflow process that can be fit to any organization’s information needs. Abstract: Open source software (OSS) is popular with technically sophisticated users, who are often also the software developers, and has not yet made a significant impact on the desktop of most users. OSS has much potential for libraries and information centres, and there are a number of projects, including Greenstone, DSpace and Ganesha, etc that demonstrates its viability in this context. OSS is becoming an increasingly popular software development method. This paper highlights what is an OSS, its features, software licensing, advantages and disadvantages. The paper also highlights the features, functions and use of three popular digital libraries software viz. Greenstone, DSpace and Ganesha. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1573 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: This paper identifies and outlines the role & importance of various Institutional Repositories (IR) in India. The rapid advent use of IT has completely revolutionized the library systems and changed library services. In India open access movement is getting momentum in libraries to overcome the access barriers of scholarly publication. The institutional repositories were identified through a study of the literature, as well as internet searching and browsing. Each of the Institutional Repository software has a lot of features, unique facilities and excellent capabilities, which the users could explore and experiment. But in this paper we have tried to compare only, two Institutional Repository software i.e. Dspace & Eprints & its role in building Institutional Repositories along with the comparison the various aspects of D-space & E-print software, the various institutions using it in India for their Institutional Repository. Most of the Institutional Repositories (IR) in India use D-space and E-prints software. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/983 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The emergence of computer communication technology has accelerated and offers great opportunities to fast, cost effective and efficient electronic communication. In addition, universities and other institutions across the globe are building up their own institutional repository center. Therefore, librarians and library professionals should take initiative and come up with institutional repositories so that researchers and the scholars can access the scholarly publishing materials. The present article highlights the overview of the institutional repositories. It also highlights the development of institutional repositories and its role. Abstract: Open Source Software (OSS) is software available free of cost with source code for anyone to use. Since last few years, it is gaining attention of library and information professionals. Digitization involves huge money to create and maintain and the OSS appears to be a means to reduce it. Among these, DSpace and Greenstone are becoming more popular in India and abroad. This paper deals with the comparison of these two popular OSS from various points of view. The comparative table may help the professionals who are planning to create a digital library/ institutional repository. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/517 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Rare documents are the primary sources of historic information. Digital preservation of rare documents restores it from loss, decay and theft. This paper discusses all these aspects with the practical approach planned for digital preservation, collection of its rare documents, conferences, audios of important speakers and other collections of IIAS Library. The preservation of digital information and brief installation process of Dspace are an important part of this discussion. Presently IIAS library has opted Dspace software for the development of digital archive. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/989 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Metadata research drastically improved the resource discovery mechanism in accessing information from a large distributed environment. Even technological capabilities permit multiple metadata schemas for standardizing the structure and content of indexing information towards an efficient resource discovery. This paper presents the issues on standard metadata in order to pursue digital repositories and dynamic web pages. It proposes various means of harvesting metadata using optimum standards and protocols. It also enumerates inherent mechanisms for metadata harvesting in DSpace enabled repositories through various harvesting tools; and evaluates XML as current popular choice for metadata harvesting (OAI-PMH) and exchange. System support to multiple metadata formats in DSpace has been discussed thoroughly. Finally it recognizes interoperability and extensibility functions that are being realized increasingly towards a long-term management and preservation of digital objects. However the glimpses of metadata production tools (newer & developed) could accelerate the digital repository initiatives with an increasing popularity of open access movement in real world. Abstract: The choice of library management programme is constituted by social, economic and or political factors that result in selection of a system that is not suitable for the library requirements, characteristics and functions. Open Source Software or OSS has revolutionised the modus operandi of library software for library automation. OSS is quickly becoming a solution, owing to the freedom to copy, modify and distribute it and freedom from contracts as well as for greater opportunities for interoperability with other application. The paper mainly discusses about different OSS. It is a relatively new idea for library automation. People often advocate OSS because it is free. Some of the selected OSS is highlighted. OSS is an umbrella term used to refer to a wide range of software products, services and communities. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1139 Files in this item: 1
