Abstract: Creation of research results and its publications is extremely important for further research in the same area. Research institutions are already making their best effort to digitize their research output and keeping it in an archive as repository for internal access and sharing among peer research. Open access model has paved way for publishing the research result on public access mode. Shodhganga is a National Repository of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs) awarded in Indian Universities. Search and discovery of content in a semantic approach is paramount for a researcher to navigate to the proper content in ETDs. Creation of meta-data, organizing it in a logically linked relation is proposed for a semantic visual browser. Use of ontology for the explicit specification of conceptualization of the important meta-data elements by using latest semantic tools such as RDF/XML, OWL, Protégé, NeOn toolkit are discussed in this paper. A conceptual framework for ontologies based on the standard and advanced ontological model and its creation and implementation with reference to ETDs is also discussed. Abstract: The amount of available information online has increased exponentially with the rapid development of the World Wide Web. A lack of standardization and common vocabulary has continued to generate heterogeneity, which strongly hinders information exchange and communication. Ontologies, which capture the semantics of information from various sources and giving them a concise, uniform and declarative description, have gained significance due to the demands in academia and industry. This paper discusses ontology and its uses in semantic webs for digital libraries. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1024 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The use of digital library in this era advances the speed of information access. In this regard the demand for the digitization of the paper based information into the digital format is evolving. Most of the time this requirements are fulfilled by developing digital library which are capable to hold and store a huge amount of digital data either separately or in archive. The present digital library system is facing the problem of incomplete/partial automation, resource sharing operation integration, interoperability due to heterogeneous data, information and knowledge for information discovery. Adding semantics to the digital library can alleviate the same. So, a proper Knowledge Management System based on Ontology is a key requirement. In this paper a conceptual framework is proposed for better Knowledge Management for the digital library using Ontologies. In addition to that this paper discusses about the necessity of constructing ontology based knowledge management in digital libraries using semantics. Abstract: The past few years have seen tremendous developments in information production, acquisition, and dissemination. Budgetary restrictions in research libraries have led to a period known as the serial cutting era. The new millennium has also ushered in the concept of the virtual library with seamless access to an integrated collection of print, electronic, and multimedia resources regardless of their physical location or ownership. Research scientists, policy makers, and reference librarians the world over are coming together to introduce reforms to make scientific knowledge affordable. Providing access to information free of charge in electronic formats is a concept that is gaining momentum. Open Access is one step ahead of Free Access. Open Access holds promise to remove both price and permission barriers to the scientific communication by using Internet. The present paper outlines the features of open access and the two vehicles viz. open access journals and open access archives. A few current open access initiatives in India are described in detail. In India, there is a large opportunity for open access publishing but still the number of registered archives is very less. Indian scientific communities and organizations like Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian Institute of Science, Indian National Science Academy, NISCAIR, INFLIBNET, etc are now actively taking initiatives towards creation of institutional repositories and providing open access to their publications. Abstract: Open Access (OA) initiative emerged as a revolutionary movement that promotes free access to scholarly publications over the Internet, removes the price and permission barriers and ensures the widest possible dissemination of research. OA exists where there is free, immediate and unrestricted availability of digital content. In India poor access to international journals and the low visibility of research papers are the major problems facing Indian researchers. OA is viewed as a solution to remedy this problem.A number of workshops and training events were organized in India during this period, where a few thousand library and computer professionals received training in open source software for building open access repositories. The present paper aims to give the concept of Open Access and highlights some of the Open Access Journal initiatives in India.Open Access to information and knowledge not only enables digital inclusion of common citizens, particularly under privileged communities, but also bridges social divides. Abstract: India, the second most populous country, and the most populous democracy in the world. Economic reforms have transformed it into the second fastest growing large economy. It has one of the largest English speaking populations in the world. India offers one of the largest higher education systems in the world. It has around 300 universities with 15000 Colleges of Engineering, Medical, Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences, Commerce, Science and Management Education out of which nearly 10000 Ph.Ds are being awarded every year. Scholarly journals are considered to be the main carrier of quality scholarly knowledge. In majority of the cases public money is utilized in research projects. Scientists and scholars working on these projects produce articles containing research results. These are sent to scholarly journals for publication. These articles carrying nascent information are expected to generate new cycles of knowledge. However the traditional process of publishing system of print-only journals prevent easy and quick access to these articles. Providing open access to the research work will help the researchers, especially in the developing world, to have access to the research literature from across the world. The paper outlines the features of one of most popular open source software Open Journal Systems (OJS) for Open access journal publishing. More and more number of open access journals in India will bring a significant increase in the productivity and visibility of Indian scientific research. Abstract: Open access journals are scholarly journals that are available to the reader “without financial or other barrier other than access to the internet itself.” Some are subsidized, and some require payment on behalf of the author. Subsidized journals are financed by an academic institution or a government information center; those requiring payment are typically financed by money made available to researchers for the purpose from a public or private funding agency, as part of a research grant. There have also been several modifications of open access journals that have considerably different natures: hybrid open access journals and delayed open access journals. Open access journals (sometimes called the “gold road to open access”) are one of the two general methods for providing open access. The other one (sometimes called the “green road”) is self-archiving in a repository. The publisher of an open Access journal is known as an open access publisher, and the process, open access publishing. The paper describes about the open access and open access journals. The benefits of the OAJ to researchers, for education, types of OAJ, the OAJ and the library, essential of OAJ, advantages and disadvantages of OAJ, current problems, criticism, history and links are discussed in this paper for the benefit of the research scholars.
