Venugopal, S (INFLIBNET Centre, March NaN, 2001)[more][less]
Abstract: There has been steady erosion of sole custodial authority of the library on the heritage of human kind ever since the Information Technology brought about a media revolution in the content and access of human knowledge. Metaphorically, the library has triumphantly crossed the physical barriers of time and space. The library automation has reached, but, the first milestone of providing multiple bibliographical-access to the printed documents mostly, but has not penetrated further into the full-texts. The library needs to look beyond automation. Admittedly, the library has to effectively carry on its mission with new stock -in-trade of e-books/e-journals. It has to redefine its services by way of responding constructively and imaginatively to the challenges. Days are not very far off when the library will be brought to the desktop of each user for collaborative virtual reference service. The organization of the Internet resources in inter- and intra disciplinary areas for the prospective community of scholars rests with the library professionals. Abstract: The ongoing Information Technology(IT) revolution has deeply affected almost all areas of our life and all aspects of humans activity. Libraries, Information and Documentation Centres(LIBIDOCS) are no exception to the impact of Information Technology. The application of IT in different types of libraries in India has gained sufficient momentum. The IT application tools are essential for providing efficient and cost effective library and information services to the user community in the present scenario. Review of literature reveals a number of studies conducted in the application of IT in LIBIDOCS in the recent years. This paper presents one such study which has been carried out by surveying the application of IT among academic LICS in and around Chennai. There are nearly 100 academic institutions at graduate, post graduate and research levels in various disciplines. Libraries of 45 institutions like universities and colleges have been covered in the survey to analyse the nature, extent and types of application of IT based services. It also studies the areas of IT application, collection development policy , manpower development and the attitude of staff towards IT application. Finally, it also analyses the reasons for poor use of IT if any, and concludes objectively that application of IT in university libraries would certainly bring about orderly operations in Library and Information Manager Environment (LIME) without much of human interventions. Abstract: From the early 90’s, the pool of free scholarly electronic journals has increased considerably. Electronic Journals in Scholarly setting continue a tradition of creation and dissemination of knowledge that has begun long ago on Print Journals. The attitude and publishing habits of researchers have changed. Amidst the furore of serial price increase, the steady growth of scholarly journals freely available in electronic form is worth noticing. Most editors and publishers agree that the research findings should be made widely available to all, and the internet is capable of doing just that. This paper tends to look at some of the aspects of free scholarly journals, their availability, impact on the scientific community and resource links. Abstract: For several decades, preservation specialists have voiced concern over preservation of our cultural heritage in electronic form. Digital information is no less important than its analogue counterpart. Both require efforts to preserve the wealth that they contain. But, because electronic formats are mo re fragile and rely on technology that is constantly changing, the decisions that must be made about preservation must be considered sooner rather than later. It is in this context, that, this paper explores the issues surrounding the preservation of digital information and throws light on proposed strategies for digital longevity. This paper concludes that the need of hour is to create and develop valid documents in standard formats and adopt suitable methods to preserve data in digital format. Jeevan, V K J (INFLIBNET Centre, March NaN, 2001)[more][less]
Abstract: As a means for improving access and for preserving the contents for posterity, a proposal for developing a digital library of Indian Library and Information Science journals is attempted in this paper. A brief about the purposes, functions, and tasks involved in digital library development is discussed. Around 29 journals are identified for digitising, by considering the style and coverage of articles published in them from those listed as from India in Ulrichs, and by making a survey of journals published. Since digitisation and digital library development are stupendous tasks involving computer and communications infrastructure, and considerable specialized human skill, institutions like INSDOC, DRTC, NCSI, DELNET and INFLIBNET are identified to host this decentralised digital library. To have the state of affairs in the national level, two case studies of Current Science online and the recent venture by NISSAT to host their Newsletter, Information Today and Tomorrow on Tripod Server is presented. The need for proper formats like PDF, as the initiatives discussed are resorting to multiple formats of html, gif and jpg to deal with text and figures, is stressed. Since some of the journals have a collection of over 4 decades and in all probability old issues in electronic form may not be available, scanning and CD archiving of old issues is suggested with web access to the latest volumes, may be 5-10 years to begin with. Problems and prospects of how the copyrights are transferred to the developer, how the contents are accessed, security mechanisms, sponsorships needed to host it as a free facility permitting unhindered access, and the unresolvable problem of Internet bandwidth demands are highlighted. Abstract: For Social Science research libraries, preservation of documents is as important as the acquisition, access and retrieval of information. The application of information technology, therefore, needs to be applied to preservation as well. The modern techniques give us the option for preservation, access and retrieval, which was not possible with the traditional options. Digitisation, as a modern method of preservation, is yet to be tested as far as reliability is concerned. So, before undertaking the process of digitisation, a clear-cut policy should be formulated and certain guidelines are to be outlined pertaining to selection, both of documents and software. A cost-benefit analysis should also be made to ensure that the digitisation of documents reaps maximum benefits and justifies the cost involved. Rajkumar, P V (INFLIBNET Centre, March NaN, 2001)[more][less]
Abstract: The digital library offers users the prospect of access to electronic resources at their convenience temporally and spatially. Users do not have to be concerned with the physical library’s hours of operation, and users do not have to physically go to the library to access resources. Much has been written about the digital library. The focus of most studies, papers, and articles has been on the technology, or on the types of resources offered. Human interaction in the digital library is discussed far less frequently. One would almost get the impression that the service tradition of the physical library will be unnecessary and redundant in the digital library environment. This paper explores the role of the librarian and of the service perspective, in the digital library environment. Focus of the paper is limited to librarian/user collaboration where the librarian and user are not co-located. The author, explores the role of the librarian as outlined in the literature on digital libraries, examines some studies that attempt to put the service perspective in the digital library, surveys existing initiatives in providing library services electronically, and outlines potential service perspectives for the digital library. Abstract: Managing the digital contents is a generic problem. Digital contents can include anything from business logic (rules, procedures, standards, specifications, communications etc.) and business transactions to digital books, video and images (digital library) gathered for the purposes of reading, viewing, listening, study and reference. Thus digital library can be called a subset of digital contents. The complexity of managing them is directly proportional to the volume, location and type of contents. Storage technology is advancing and access technology is undergoing changes in terms of hardware and software. The technical challenges in managing and servicing a digital library, have been presented here. Numerous examples have also been given to elaborate the ideas.
