Abstract: Ever since the development of the webpage, the Internet resources have grown at an exponential rate. Growth rate has further increased with the digitization of old documents besides the creation of new digital resources. The Internet empowers every author to create, publish and directly distribute the contents to the end users. Easy and expeditious access to information, convenience of use and advances in technology led to the increasing accessibility of the Internet resources and further accelerated their growth. The Internet can provide comprehensive information in a diversity of subjects for a variety of needs and to various categories of users at any point of time. The major concern now is evaluation and quality filtering of information resources, accessible on the Internet. This paper includes the criteria for evaluation and selection of web resources for libraries and information users. Abstract: Digital resources are a comparatively new category of information materials in Indian libraries.Although in many ways managing digital resources is similar to handling other resources, thereare significant differences. One major difference lies in the fact that libraries are also increasingly getting involved in the very creation of digital resources.Digital resources can broadly be grouped into two categories – those that are originally created and distributed in digital format and those that are originally created in another format and are later converted into a digital format through a process generally referred to as digitization. Several organizations – libraries, governments, research institutions, and commercial organizations - at local, regional, national and international levels are involved on digitization activities. This paper begins with an understanding of digitization - the meaning and the processes – and then seeks to look at the issues involved in the digitization process from the perspective of libraries. As such, the focus is greater on the digitization of printed materials, rather than objects or sound, film or video recordings. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/79 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Journals are an important source of information to a research community. But the problems associated with information explosion and escalating cost of journals have made it difficult to effectively access the information contained in journals, even for a narrow subject area. Application of information technology, like availability of on-line journals and e-mail based table of contents services, has eased the problem to some extent. One such service is the Electronic Table of Contents (ETOC) service provided by National Centre for Science Information (NCSI) to the research community at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). This service is based on the Current Contents obtained from Institute of Scientific Information (ISI). This work aims to add value to the ETOC service by including information about the availability or non-availability of a journal in the JRD Tata Memorial Library in the institute in the ETOC service. Abstract: A library may procure contents in various sources and forms to service their clients. In the predominantly paper based erstwhile environment all these contents were put to similar types of use, and copyright restrictions were imposed based on the quantum of pages copied etc. In the electronic and digital perspective, owners of information are resorting to punitive measures regarding the use and contents in digital form. Some of the constraints faced by our libraries to engage in serious digital initiatives are three fold-that of money, manpower and contents. Most of our libraries, particularly in the higher education and research institutes solely depend on the information providers and publishers in the developed world to satisfy their urge for vital contents that inspire indigenous research. Since contents are a major ingredient in digital library development, the pragmatic and viable way out for libraries is to judiciously judge them as available in electronic forms in optical media or on Web and procure at least some of them for hosting locally. This paper presents some of the major issues involved in such a critical activity with some illustrative examples available like IEE/IEEE Electronic Library, Indian Standards on CD-ROM, Science Direct and Web access of Indian Academy of Sciences journals. The justification for selecting external contents has also been mentioned. A detailed checklist for evaluating contents is presented from various angles, like authenticity of content, user interface, search and display capabilities, documentation and technical support, and Media dependent features. Abstract: Information superhighway is today thought of as a revolutionary platform intended to form a network connecting computers globally. The Digital Library System (DLS) is an information service in which all the information resources are available in computer processable form and the functions of acquisition, storage, preservation, retrieval, access and display are carried out through the use of digital technologies. It is not restricted to the provision of information in text format. In fact, audio and video resources are also to be represented digitally. A DLS can disseminate its information across a network and users can retrieve information in the same way. Scholarly and professionals interest in DLS has grown rapidly during 1990s. A typical DLS is a media server connected to high speed networks. This paper discusses the typical DLS, with its components and features.
