Abstract: A survey of library and information centres of 12 institutions which include 3 Engineering colleges, 4 Research Centres and 5 Software companies was conducted. While investigating creation and management of digital resources as well as conventional resources, it was observed that engineering colleges have interactive classroom type of learning and therefore the libraries have mainly textbooks/reference books, where as in software companies, information was available in the web based form. It was also observed that software companies were establishing Documentation/Resources centres. In order to interact more effectively to convert information into solutions and useful products via knowledge, it is suggested that libraries/information centres should play an active role in this process. Research institutions and engineering colleges can also follow the learning and skill development process followed by IT companies. Abstract: To be more concrete about the importance of rich representation of Indian Heritage, digitization of ancient purana vidya is prerequisite. Indian heritage has reached to masses in India through 18 puranas, because of their certain outstanding features. The same could be represented very effectively appealing to masses via. Digitization process of it. Towards the digitization, puranas can be represented metaphorically with their structural peculiarities. The main purpose of this research paper is to bring to the floor the metaphorical analysis of this huge source under Indian Heritage(IH), by adopting the analogical model, that will be useful for contents tool designers as well as to the content creators by systematizing and fastening their work, and ultimately to the end users from the point of interfaces. With these issues, exploring an environmental atmosphere to make effective the process of digitization is the need for an integrated Indian Heritage Digital Library. Abstract: It is often said that “People must know the past to understand the present and face the future”. This statement more particularly suits to the church archival materials which depict and reflect the church heritage. In this paper an attempt has been made to present an overview of church archival materials in India in general and the Archdiocese of Madras-Mylapore in particular. It is based on a questionnaire survey. The survey covered various church archives in India. It has been found that in almost all church archives in India the archival materials are not effectively stored and preserved. Therefore, keeping in view, the present state of affairs in the care and maintenance of church archival materials and with the available technology, it is proposed to go in for ‘digitization’ as a means of preservation of church archival materials. In this context, the concept of digitization and its advantages, the hardware and software required for digitization, and the processes have been explained. Further, the type of archival materials to be digitized has been specified. The paper, concluding that in view of the effectiveness of digitization as a means of preservation, urges that in this new millennium the church archives in India should go in for digitization. Abstract: As the Internet became an accepted source of electronic information, a variety of information communities have developed metadata to organize these resources to effectively serve their users. So metadata has taken on a more significant role of knowledge representation and data mining. In today's context, where the web contains the collection of massive heterogeneous objects, which need to be unified and linked in a single resource, we are witnessing both the growth of different metadata standards and the attempts to reconcile the common attributes in the existing overlapping standards. The goal is to access relevant information seamlessly, regardless of its type and location. This article addresses different aspects of metadata, the rationale behind it and gives a general picture of Dublin Core metadata elements. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/87 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Library service is a busy, user-oriented activity, with a deep-rooted emphasis on means rather than ends, on tactics rather than strategy, on building collections rather than on the roles those collections play. This has been reflected by many renewed critics in their professional literature on practical and technical matters. In this paper the authors try to emphasise major changes that are likely to take place and a need for recognition regarding convergence between library, computing , and telecommunications services; of probable changes in the publishing world, and library management using new tools and techniques. Tyagi, Om Prakash (INFLIBNET Centre, March NaN, 2001)[more][less]
Abstract: The age of digital technology has revolutionised communications. It is used and enjoyed by all strata of society for business, education, research, and entertainment. Digitisation of information is of particular relevance to business. Organizations must learn how to use information effectively, as competition will keep increasing and profit margins will be under pressure. Information should be stored in a manner that the retrieval is quick and storage safe and permanent. Paper records, books, journals and reports are not very handy as compared to CD-ROMs when it comes to looking for a particular piece of information. It may take, some times, weeks to compile the results, using traditional records. So, we are looking at digitisation as a solution for the coming years. The digital collections must include genre of library materials such as text (books, serials, dissertations/theses), numeric database (statistical/scientific) and special collections (image, audio, video, manuscript etc.). In this paper, the author focuses on the meaning of digitization, benefits of digitization, application area and digitisation process. Abstract: Technology advances over the past two decades have made data retrieval faster and easier, giving rise to a substantial industry providing access to professional, business and scientific information. Some progress has been made towards increasing the relevancy of the data with the induction of various search engines and subject directories. Despite these activities, information sources remain scattered, hard to find and difficult to access. Using technology, visionary institutions, associations and individuals build a kind of network resource discovery service, called “Subject Gateways” on the web, which is de-facto network use environment. This subject gateways evolved during the last five years among early digital library projects within the library communities of the various countries. Subject gateways allows libraries and related organizations to explore the usefulness of their subject expertise in the organisation of knowledge in the word of network -based, digital information. This paper gives an overview of the subject gateways, its historical development, definitions, features and lastly the burning issues encompassing it. Also some of the international initiatives related to further research and trend are explored. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/107 Files in this item: 1
