Abstract: Catalog used to be a one point resource locater in Library in earlier days. Library professionals and users are happy with that practice in the print only era. Due to emergence of Electronic Resources, the role of catalog is also changing. Electronic resources have become reality along with print resources. Accessing electronic resources shows that librarians and users are facing a complex set of challenges. While a number of products have evolved for each aspect of the problem, the question is, how can they all be designed and implemented in such a way that they all work together, providing a clear and seamless interface for library users and avoiding redundant work for library staff? To date, no single product exists that provides comprehensive management of electronic resources. Will portals or federated search solutions be the answer to managing and providing access to resources available from academic libraries as well as other content needed by the academic community? With many, disparate electronic information sources available today, users are challenged with identifying and locating resources that match their needs. This paper explores some of the issues related to future of the catalog. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/548 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Library Consortia or Consortium is now being overheard globally. It is more because of electronic or digital form of information. Consortia are all about sharing resources and improving access to information. These resources are shared among libraries that have common missions, goals and clients (users) and act on those commonalties. Before we are sharing own library resources through inter library loan, but in this Information communication technology (ICT) age it has gained momentum even in the developing countries. When library consortiums are formed, the existing environment about users’ preferences and difficulties need to be studied. Initiating such studies would enable to incorporate the findings as the major input in consortium formation. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1124 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The primary objective and functions of libraries have not changed due to computerization. Only, the tools and techniques to achieve these objectives with ease and accuracy have. In the present day the focus is on Electronic Information. Thus it is not only acquiring, sources of information but providing access to information and sharing also. With the Internet, WWW and Information explosion, identification and extraction of information resources is an essential function of all libraries and information centers. The Electronic information sources are rapidly growing and with a wide variety in form and content it takes a lot of time to get the required information. There is thus a need to organize and classify this wide spectrum of information. With this as background, the author has created a web page providing information to not only the internal sources at the Central Library, I.I.T Bombay but also links to external electronic information sources in the field Materials Science. Abstract: 21st century web savvy people believe that one day everything ever created by humans will be available online. Call it the myth or a truth it is the future of Digital Libraries. Because there is unlimited real estate in cyberspace and because media can be digitized, we can fill cyberspace with all human knowledge and give everyone access to it. Information in all forms is recognized as a very valuable and powerful resource, forcing information management disciplines to become highly professional and technologically updated. All information in any recorded format can be conveyed in one common format—digital. This paints the vision of a sweeping and awesome potential of “Paperless Society”. This paper is intended to describe the technology trends in digital libraries, discuss key issues involved in digital library implementation, and provide some new future trends of digital library. The paper takes up the future concepts like Digital Classrooms, Digital Talking Books, Verbal Society, Paperless Society and Untethered Communication. Abstract: Paper projects the performance of the Internet Service Providers (ISP), especially the leased line connectivity extended from the institutions of Government of India i.e., Software Technology Parks of India (STPI) established under the Ministry of Information Technology and Videsh Sanchar Nigam Ltd., (VSNL) established under the Ministry of Communication. Emphasis is laid on the leased line Internet connectivity being extended to the academic institutions and private industrial establishments in Mysore City. Also highlighted are the various issues concerned with hardware and passive component requirements, including the comparison of cost factor. The data /information provided here are based on the empirical studies and experiences gained in both the cases over the past 3 years. Also depicted are the comparison of certain issues of terms and conditions quoted by both the ISPs, while extending the services. More than anything, the effectiveness of services and the customer satisfaction in attending to the work of installation and follow-up services are compared. The merits and demerits in getting the Internet connectivity through the local data circuit maintained by the BSNL (DoT) and the radio waves from the earth station are examined. Abstract: In this paper, we first present a memoized parsing method for reducing the efforts of computation in parsing the strings/ sentences of a formal’ natural language. We then discuss the statistical parsing that extracts the maximum/ most likelihood parse amongst the several parses of a string/ sentence in formal and natural domain as the most appropriate representative in disambiguation process. We integrate the statistical and memoized parsing together to achieve an efficient parsing technique. This integrated approach allows us to obtain the memoized-most-likelihood parse. Memoized-most-likelihood parse has an additional performance strength in the sense that it is highly useful further in parsing semantics. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/501 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: When browsing information on large Web sites, users often receive too much irrelevant information. The WWW Information Collection, Collaging, and Programming (Wiccap) system lets ordinary users build personalized Web views, which let them see only the information they want — and in the way they prefer. It provides a set of GUI tools, including a mapping wizard, extraction agent, and presentation toolkit, that hide the internal representation from ordinary users, but let experienced users create more advanced mapping rules. Wiccap encapsulates HTML- and language-specific details from the original Web site, facilitating the creation of personalized Personalization. Abstract: While digital technologies are enabling information to be created, manipulated, disseminated, located, and stored with increasing ease, preserving access to this information poses a significant challenge. Digital preservation involves the use of well-defined techniques to prevent the original artifact from deteriorating further and to perhaps even improve it to the point where it can be used again. It involves quite different methods, skills, and outcomes and can complement traditional preservation services, while simultaneously providing unique and dynamic new uses of information. Abstract: Plagiarism is an important ethical issue, but many researchers are still not aware of its seriousness. It is a general observation that plagiarism implies just copying or borrowing another’s work and original ideas. Terms such as ‘copying’ and ‘borrowing’ can misguide readers from the seriousness of this cognizable offense and lead them towards copyright violations. Both the teacher/guide and the librarian can play key role in reducing plagiarism by guiding students on how to use and cite proper sources of information through information literacy programs. This paper discusses the issue of plagiarism along with examples from the field of Arts and Humanities, and anti-plagiarism initiatives taken in India. The author suggests that to some extent plagiarism can be avoided with an information literacy programme, and this paper attempts to present information on this literacy framework.
