Abstract: The pivotal role of education as an instrument of social change - by altering the human perspective and transforming the traditional mindset of society is well recognized. The universalisation of education has become the top priority, especially for the developing countries. But the extension of quality education to remote and rural regions becomes a Herculean task for a large country like India with multi-lingual and multi-cultural population separated by vast geographical distances, and, in many instances, inaccessible terrain. Open Courseware (OCW) is part of a comparatively new educational movement in the line of Open Access (OA) and leading institutions and universities around the world are capitalizing it for the betterment of the society. OCW provides learners an opportunity to disseminate knowledge beyond the traditional classroom environment. The present study aims to spread the word of OCW and sensitize the teachers and learners about the tremendous potential of OCW in the context of education in India. Abstract: There are many web-authoring software like FrontPage, Dreamweaver, etc which have been used to develop and maintain the websites. But gradually, it became difficult to maintain and update the websites because of their very dynamic nature and a variety of file formats. Content Management Systems (CMS) evolved as an alternative to such web-authoring tools. There are many CMS Like Joomla, Drupal, Mambo, Pligg, Plone, Post Nuke, Tweak, Zope etc., but this paper deals with a comparative analysis between Joomla and Drupal. The goal of this comparative study is to find the better CMS of the two according to various selected criteria. The criteria includes installation, platform support, browser support, modules and extensions, documentation, support, user management, multimedia integration, content creation and searching. Abstract: Open-source software (OSS) is a utility to empower the non-elite individuals and institutions to manage knowledge and develop low cost virtual libraries. It is an attempt to keep the software market away from monopolies and enable the non-elite institutions to build sustainable institutional repositories. Though OSS has made profound impact in the public domain worldwide, yet there is an urgent need to sensitize the stakeholders in India to enable them to learn about the benefits of open-source software and promote the concept and practice behind the movement. Only this way we can ensure diversity, equity, quality and equality, and flexibility in our products and services. Raising awareness among the non-elite about the open-source software is essential for managing knowledge and developing an egalitarian society. Open-source software has the potential to contain the twin perils of digital divide and digital determinism. Institutional repositories and WIKI-Space are the right step in preserving and disseminating our documentary heritage. This paper highlights the recommendations made by the National Knowledge Commission pertaining to the cutting-edge of Open-source software and knowledge management. It also raises a few issues that need immediate attention to empower the info-poor and develop an inclusive society. Implications of open-source software and knowledge management have also been pointed out. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1431 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Information and documentation services available on the Internet through web servers are growing in an exponential manner. In recent times, open source software has been seen as an increasingly mainstream part of the market. The field of content management system has seen particularly strong growth in open source solutions, perhaps in direct response to the very high prices that commercial content management system have historically demanded. The increasing complexity of services and systems supporting has made it necessary to formulate a theoretical and practical corpus capable of combining classical information management techniques within organizations with the particular features of the digital environment. In this article the authors highlighted some of the most popular open source, free to download and use content management system tools. One can choose any of them for their website depending on their particular needs or organizational requirements. This article also highlights the different types, license, free or open source, database type, platforms, etc. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1028 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The libraries have adapted themselves to a new challenge of information integration and presentation in order to enhance access to the widely dispersed and distributed electronic information and publications. The open URL standard is a breakthrough for achieving the means to integrate electronic resources of the library. Open URL mechanism transports metadata of electronic resources from one resource to another and provides dynamic links from metadata to full content of the resource described by the metadata. This paper describes the concept underlying the Open URL mechanism, explains the Open URL structure and the link resolvers as the linking component for the resource integration in the libraries. Abstract: Catalog used to be a one point resource locater in Library in earlier days. Library professionals and users are happy with that practice in the print only era. Due to emergence of Electronic Resources, the role of catalog is also changing. Electronic resources have become reality along with print resources. Accessing electronic resources shows that librarians and users are facing a complex set of challenges. While a number of products have evolved for each aspect of the problem, the question is, how can they all be designed and implemented in such a way that they all work together, providing a clear and seamless interface for library users and avoiding redundant work for library staff? To date, no single product exists that provides comprehensive management of electronic resources. Will portals or federated search solutions be the answer to managing and providing access to resources available from academic libraries as well as other content needed by the academic community? With many, disparate electronic information sources available today, users are challenged with identifying and locating resources that match their needs. This paper explores some of the issues related to future of the catalog. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/548 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Library Consortia or Consortium is now being overheard globally. It is more because of electronic or digital form of information. Consortia are all about sharing resources and improving access to information. These resources are shared among libraries that have common missions, goals and clients (users) and act on those commonalties. Before we are sharing own library resources through inter library loan, but in this Information communication technology (ICT) age it has gained momentum even in the developing countries. When library consortiums are formed, the existing environment about users’ preferences and difficulties need to be studied. Initiating such studies would enable to incorporate the findings as the major input in consortium formation. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1124 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The primary objective and functions of libraries have not changed due to computerization. Only, the tools and techniques to achieve these objectives with ease and accuracy have. In the present day the focus is on Electronic Information. Thus it is not only acquiring, sources of information but providing access to information and sharing also. With the Internet, WWW and Information explosion, identification and extraction of information resources is an essential function of all libraries and information centers. The Electronic information sources are rapidly growing and with a wide variety in form and content it takes a lot of time to get the required information. There is thus a need to organize and classify this wide spectrum of information. With this as background, the author has created a web page providing information to not only the internal sources at the Central Library, I.I.T Bombay but also links to external electronic information sources in the field Materials Science.
