Abstract: The university of Kashmir was initiated to the use of IT applications for its library services under the auspices of the INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad. The university has so far created some databases which include those of books, theses (M.Phil and Ph.D), medical dissertations (MD and MS). The Library System of the university has developed one more database of the articles published in different international and national journals available in the Central Library (Allama Iqbal Library itself). This data base viz., Journa holds 1, 50,000 odd records of the articles from the journals / periodicals available in the library. The database is kept on a few systems for the search and study of the clientele of the library augmented by the photocopying facility available in the same floor these journals are put to display. The articles presented the brief account of the efforts made in designing the journal database. Description: This is only an Abstract URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/260 Files in this item: 1

Key Aspects in Planning an Interoperable University Library Access Portal (ULAP): a Conceptual ModelSeneviratne, Wathmanel (INFLIBNET Centre, February NaN, 2003)[more][less]
Abstract: The academic environment is becoming more and more competitive in its dealings and functions and the academic culture is fast transforming as enterprising in nature. The academic library as the centre for scholarly communication faces many challenges in meeting needs and behavioural patterns of users of the university. Among the solutions used in libraries in providing information, an access strategy through web is very much requested by modern users. A university library access portal (ULAP) is the solution for information needs of academic users to facilitate teaching, learning and research. ULAP is supposed to provide updated information and access to e-resources to cope up with the changes and challenges of the curricula and learning outcomes planned under new educational strategies. The paper tries to identify important aspects to consider in portal design and attempts to build up a conceptual model of One Point Access portal for academic users. It is hoped to integrate academic environment and the electronic information environment fulfilling information needs of teachers, students and researchers. Abstract: This paper discusses introduction to full text search, its comparison with traditional approach, which gives insight on popular open source indexing and searching tools viz a viz. Lucene and Solr by Apache Foundation. In internet era libraries are known as knowledge warehouses. Library databases are prominently available in MARCXML format and there are very few free and open source (FOSS) implementations are available in public domain. Many efforts are made in integrating the popular searching and indexing techniques which powers even some of the world’s largest search engines, In library domain this has not been attempted properly This paper is an attempt to showcase technique for implementation of Lucene/Solr based fulltext indexing over MARCXML based catalogue records to provide reliable, fast and dynamic search interface with provision of facets. Abstract: Knowledge Management can be thought of as the process of collecting, organizing, classifying and disseminating information throughout an organization, so as to make it purposeful to those who need it. Knowledge Management refers to policies, procedures and technologies user for operating a continuously updated linked pair of networked databases. M concerns organizing and analyzing information in a institutions computer databases. This knowledge can be readily shared throught a institution ,instead of languishing in the department where it was created inaccessible to other readers. It involves identification of categories of knowledge needed to support the overall institutions strategy, assessment of current state of the firms knowledge and transformation of the current knowledge base into a new and more powerful knowledge base by filling knowledge gaps. Knowledge management combines indexing , searching, and push technology to help institutions organize data stored in multiple sources and deliver only relevant information to users. Abstract: The success of Knowledge management frame work in an organization depends on the timely and precise updation of the data, tools and techniques used for Information exploration. The Traditional approach of Client Server model requires the data to be pooled at a central place and all clients access this central database for access to the information, which usually requires lot of manual efforts for data collection and maintenance of the database. With recent advancement and popularity of the Peer to Peer Network architecture, we have explored the possibility of the use of such type of architecture for Knowledge Management and Resource discovery. This will ensure timely updation of database and de-centralized mode of data archival. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/185 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: This article explores the phenomenon of Knowledge Management System from the viewpoint of a management of academic libraries with a professional background as a librarian. My perspective is a critical and informed one-laced with a healthy dose of system. In the early to mid 1990’s I struggled with defining the field of information management, of identifying the differences amongst data, information and knowledge, and the implications of these differences for professional education. .The knowledge management system is a new concept that has appeared worldwide in recent years. As a sub discipline of the knowledge economy, knowledge management is a completely new concept and method of management. It works for converting intellectual assets of workers and staff members in the organisation into higher productive forces – competition power and new value.
