Abstract: Computer networks are a crucial part of organizations. It is one of the fastest growing technological areas and brings benefits virtually to every country in the world. With the interconnection of network to the Internet, the world has truly become a global village where we depend more, on digital materials. So in the present century all digital works need protection because they can be easily copied. For that reason DRM technology has taken place, which is not a single technology or not a single philosophy. It refers to a broad range of technologies and standards. DRM is neither thin nor thick copy right. DRM is potentially a planned technique for absolute protection of works. Thus the present article is intended to highlight few technological aspects of DRM which are essential in the library profession. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1076 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Library consortia for purchasing electronic journals became recognized as a vital part of academic information infrastructure at the research community. The biggest challenge that newcomers to the consortium world face is grasping the fact that standard setting is about giving away rights in technology. Leading institutions in North America and Western Europe take a variety of positive measures to promote consortium activities and formed unique consortia of many kinds. On the other hand, a consortium in India is still in a developing stage and struggle to solve problems they face. The factors that have led to the development of consortia are diverse among countries. This paper describes definitions, aim, organizations, internal structures, policies and other characteristics of the UGC-Infonet E-Journal Consortium which is one of the well known consortia for Higher Education in India under the UGC. It will also highlight the characteristics and issues faced by the consortia and the measures taken up to promote consortium activities. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1407 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Paper discusses the need for developing institutional repositories for bringing visibility to their research put and interoperability. States that the contributions of the institutions and their own researchers remain diffused and scattered in various sources hidden to the potential consumers of the institutions themselves, as well inaccessible to the contributors of the research papers. Paper raises certain issues associated with institutional repositories needing professional attention to resolve them. Suggests as to what contents should fall under the purview of the institutional repositories and with what priority. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1137 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Big deal or the consortia site licensing is the most preferred way of e-journal subscription for Indian Consortia be it INDEST or the UGC Infonet. In the big deal model all the journals published by a publisher or hosted by an aggregator on its web site are made available to the consortia members at a so called “highly reduced” price. It has been seen that the librarians throughout the world haves been raising objections to this mode since beginning. There are various concerns which have been identified such as monopoly of the publishers, use of a limited number of titles, effect of citation ranking of journals published by the small publishers and the fear of death of journals published by the developing countries. Though a number of articles have been published on this topic but most of them have been on the qualitative aspects of such deals. There are a few studies that have been conducted on quantitative aspects. In this paper a study of use of Elsevier’s ScienceDirect at IIT Roorkee has been presented which clearly shows that a very limited number of titles are frequently used in the Institute. This data clearly indicates that the Big Deal mode of subscription is not at all in the favour of the consortia. Supports an alternate model for subscription which should be based on the fixed fee access to the limited set of journals which are frequently used and pay for use for the journals which are less frequently used. Abstract: The university of Kashmir was initiated to the use of IT applications for its library services under the auspices of the INFLIBNET Centre, Ahmedabad. The university has so far created some databases which include those of books, theses (M.Phil and Ph.D), medical dissertations (MD and MS). The Library System of the university has developed one more database of the articles published in different international and national journals available in the Central Library (Allama Iqbal Library itself). This data base viz., Journa holds 1, 50,000 odd records of the articles from the journals / periodicals available in the library. The database is kept on a few systems for the search and study of the clientele of the library augmented by the photocopying facility available in the same floor these journals are put to display. Key Aspects in Planning an Interoperable University Library Access Portal (ULAP): a Conceptual ModelSeneviratne, Wathmanel (INFLIBNET Centre, February NaN, 2003)[more][less]
Abstract: The academic environment is becoming more and more competitive in its dealings and functions and the academic culture is fast transforming as enterprising in nature. The academic library as the centre for scholarly communication faces many challenges in meeting needs and behavioural patterns of users of the university. Among the solutions used in libraries in providing information, an access strategy through web is very much requested by modern users. A university library access portal (ULAP) is the solution for information needs of academic users to facilitate teaching, learning and research. ULAP is supposed to provide updated information and access to e-resources to cope up with the changes and challenges of the curricula and learning outcomes planned under new educational strategies. The paper tries to identify important aspects to consider in portal design and attempts to build up a conceptual model of One Point Access portal for academic users. It is hoped to integrate academic environment and the electronic information environment fulfilling information needs of teachers, students and researchers. Abstract: This paper discusses introduction to full text search, its comparison with traditional approach, which gives insight on popular open source indexing and searching tools viz a viz. Lucene and Solr by Apache Foundation. In internet era libraries are known as knowledge warehouses. Library databases are prominently available in MARCXML format and there are very few free and open source (FOSS) implementations are available in public domain. Many efforts are made in integrating the popular searching and indexing techniques which powers even some of the world’s largest search engines, In library domain this has not been attempted properly This paper is an attempt to showcase technique for implementation of Lucene/Solr based fulltext indexing over MARCXML based catalogue records to provide reliable, fast and dynamic search interface with provision of facets. Abstract: Knowledge Management can be thought of as the process of collecting, organizing, classifying and disseminating information throughout an organization, so as to make it purposeful to those who need it. Knowledge Management refers to policies, procedures and technologies user for operating a continuously updated linked pair of networked databases. M concerns organizing and analyzing information in a institutions computer databases. This knowledge can be readily shared throught a institution ,instead of languishing in the department where it was created inaccessible to other readers. It involves identification of categories of knowledge needed to support the overall institutions strategy, assessment of current state of the firms knowledge and transformation of the current knowledge base into a new and more powerful knowledge base by filling knowledge gaps. Knowledge management combines indexing , searching, and push technology to help institutions organize data stored in multiple sources and deliver only relevant information to users.
