Abstract: Libraries, faced with declining budgets, increasing subscription prices have found themselves unable to purchase all publications and materials that their users would generally expect to have. To compensate for this, there is shift to subscribe the journals by other models and methods. Library consortia are one of the most effective means for libraries to subscribe to E-journals. University libraries in India are accessing e-journal under UGC-INFONET E-journal consortium. This facility has also been extended to libraries in North Eastern region. This paper reflects on the growing importance of usage statistics of electronic journals, their increasing use, and in particular universities in North East region It highlights the current usage of various e-resources accessed by the users of different universities located in North East region. Abstract: This paper presents the status regarding the use of Electronic Resources by the post graduate students and Research scholars of VIT. The data reveals the extent of usefulness and the problems faced by the users in accessing the Electronic resources. The institute is providing online databases, online journals, distance education, CD & DVD ROM, Audio & Video cassettes etc. The use of these facilities is not satisfactory. The study shows that a majority of students use online journals for preparing project reports and for listing references only. The use of electronic resources for research purpose is very less. Measures should be taken to improve the use of electronic services. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1182 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: This paper highlights the present status of Institutional Repository (IR) in India by its collection type, subject coverage and total number of digital repository collections available to academic community as open sources. For this purpose, the Directory of Open Access Repositories (OpenDOAR) and the Registry of Open Access Repositories (ROAR) have been consulted. This paper focuses to develop humanities and social sciences institutional repositories in India. Results have been shown by collection type and subject coverage. Abstract: The study presents the trends in authorship pattern and author’s collaborative research in Indian chemistry literature with a sample of 53,977 articles downloaded from SCI-Expanded database in Web of Science during the period 2000-2009. The average number of authors per article is 3.55 %. In the study the degree of collaboration (C) during the overall 10 years (2000-2009) is 0.03, but the year wise degree of collaboration is almost same in all the years of mean value 0.97. In the 10 years of period, the multi authorship articles are higher and predominant on single authorship. The study found that the researchers in chemistry are keen towards teamresearch or group research rather than solo research. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1656 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Here we present about automatically generated ontologies for a semantic web search system using data mining techniques. This will improve the query process and will get better semantic results. Ranking algorithm[1] is used to search and analyze web documents in a more flexible and effective way. Hyperlink structure of web document is utilized to rank the results. We use association rule mining to find the maximal keyword patterns. Clustering is used to group retrieved documents into distinct sets. This will extract knowledge about query from the web, populate a knowledge base. The search engine that searches the web documents so far are syntactic oriented. Here we develop a searching system that semantically searches the documents. The semantics of the terms is achieved using the ontologies. Ontology serves as Meta data schemas, providing a controlled vocabulary of concepts, each with explicitly defined meaning. Ranking algorithm used here is the hyper textual ranking algorithm that scans both the contents of the documents and also the reciprocally linked documents. This technique has several advantages that include providing better semantic notion during the search. It also serves for multiple frame documents. There is a need for automatic generation of ontologies when using the semantic searching system. The paper here focuses on how the automatic generation of ontologies could be done for a semantic search system using data mining techniques. Abstract: The paper highlights on Parija Library, the Central Library of Utkal University of Orissa in relation to possible structural differentiation in the era of library automation. A critical analysis of internal and external structure of the library and states the condition of Parija Library structure before automation. Discusses about the state of the art report of automation of the library. Analyses possible external and internal restructuring of the library by dividing the whole work into different functional sections necessary in an automated environment. Provides some suggestions towards library automation in the lib rary. Concludes with the remarks that in near future Parija Library will be restructured to be a hybrid library instead of a fully automated library. Abstract: Libraries are using cutting edge item level RFID technology in a closed loop system. Today, more and more libraries are adopting RFID as it streamlines workflow in the area of self service, book returns, shelf management and inventory. The potential benefits of using RFID in libraries from the perspective of its main stake holders- the organization; library staff and its patrons shall be highlighted. The paper discusses underline NCIP standards development, practical issues related to RFID working in a library environment and touch upon basic RFID issues concerning equipment maintenance & support; software compatibility; privacy and standardization. Real potential of RFID as a cross-institution platform for identification will be limited by use of proprietary RFID systems and hence recommends system integrators, vendors and libraries to adopt standards & follow best practices guidelines issued by NISO for use of RFID in Libraries. Abstract: The history of education and the scholars produced by Bihar is well known to the world. The patliputra was the ancient capital of India during Ashoka Dynasty. The well-known libraries, i.e. Nalanda and Vikramshila were in this state. Our education started from paperless society and we are moving towards paperless society. The difference is, in ancient time paper was not invented but now the advent of IT, we are moving towards paperless society. In the context of Information Technology the article, tries to explain the existing scenario of automation especially in Academic Libraries. The paper will include the libraries of Jharkhand too. The Jharkhand is a bifurcated part of Bihar. It came into existence on 15 November 02. At present, there are 14 universities catering the needs for higher education in the state. The Patna University in richest university in terms of collection, infrastructure facilities, established in 1917.In 1992, according to State University act five new Universities were established. All the Universities are having well equipped Libraries with modern architecture. So far as Library automation is concerned it is joint responsibility of state authority and UGC/INFLIBNET to make full automated. Abstract: Discusses findings of a study conducted on Social Science researchers in two Universities in North East India. Findings show that Social Science researchers in North East India are having the same issues regarding Internet search engines as researchers in other parts of the world. Concludes that better presentation of web sites would help them get indexed by search engines and make them more accessible. Also, improvement in search strategies would help researchers find more relevant information, faster. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1325 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The Internet is a huge source of free and openly available information. However, the awareness about the availability of such free and open source information amongst members of the academic community is not clearly known. This aspect was studied using a structured questionnaire and the data recorded through the survey was analyzed. The results reinforce the commonly held belief that the academic community is largely unaware of these vast and freely available resources. The study also points out the role a librarian can play in imparting awareness through information literacy sessions from the library . URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1626 Files in this item: 1
