Abstract: An attempt has been made to determine the present status of familiarity and use of Digital resources. It was felt that use of digital resources is still poor among the medical students of the Universities in the developing countries. This paper presents survey to investigate the familiarity and use of Digital resources by students through online and offline Information Databases of the Central Library, “Central Library Books & Journals Database (CLBJD), and the CD-ROMs databases available in the academic libraries (MUI). The subjects of this study were the students of the Isfahan Medical University. For evaluating study questions and data collection, the questionnaire was distributed to a random sample of 250 students. The result of this survey are presented and discussed in the paper. Abstract: With web search getting to be more and more popular, and predictions that they would be even more popular in the coming years, given the exorbitant growth of the web in recent years, search engines, in their quest to be branded the best, have regularly been providing additional features. The users of web search interfaces are typically diverse and have wide ranging interests. This is in contrast to other application interfaces which cater to a specialized group of people. In this study, we examine the influence the interface manifestation of such features has, in their usability and effectiveness. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1542 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Currently, in Taiwan there is no demonstrable solution for access management to the many heterogeneous electronic resources that academic and university libraries provide for users, such as the full texts of electronic journals and books, electronic databases, among many others. Shibboleth has been developed in U.S.A. and the United Kingdom and has become an emerging solution to the access management of electronic resources in a growing number of developed countries. Our experience in starting a virtual federation by setting up an Identity Provider (IdP) at Academia Sinica and a Service Provider (SP) at the Chinese Geoscience Union (CGU), Taipei, a society which publishes a SCI journal entitled “Terrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences”, as well as request Shibbolethbased service from some participating Shibboleth publishers like Elsevier, Springer and Thomson ISI, can provide valuable experiences to any library or organization wanting to start a Shibboleth federated access management for reference. Abstract: The article describes how federated search helps the users to find resources across library collections. Federated search is essen-tially an umbrella search often utilizing, as far as possible, the search facilities already offered by each library resource. Federated searching, also known as meta searching, broadcast searching, cross searching, and a variety of other names, is the ability to search multiple information resources from a single interface and return an integrated set of results. These targets include the library’s collection of books, software, databases and online public access catalogs. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1599 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: This article provides a brief background on the current state of information search in this highly connected and pervasive internet age. It is followed by an introduction to the federated search engine and its definition. While this article assumes that the role played by federated search engine in searching disparate information has been now quite justified and established, it lays the emphasis on the capabilities of the federated search engines. It does so by listing the functionalities expected from a federated search engine, and higher level explanation of inner workings of the federated search engine. It also lists the advantages and shortcomings of federated search engines. This is followed by the selection criteria of a federated search engine and lastly a list of some of the popular federated search engines available today. Abstract: In the Web 2.0 environment, users are empowered to collaborate and share information. This has made the Web more participatory in nature thereby increasing the content creation at a rapid pace. With this, the ever challenging problem of categorizing content over the Web has increased tremendously. To combat this, Web 2.0 has one feature known as “Folksonomy”. This allows users to attach tags to the content so that they can use these tags to retrieve the content in the future. Folksonomy has pros & cons compared to traditional subject indexing. This paper describes the fundamental problems inherited to Folksonomy with a case study of user tagging in Social Question & Answer Platform used within Tata Consultancy Services (TCS). Abstract: Resource sharing is an age-old concept in the Library and Information profession, which is addressed by terms such as co-operation, consortia, networking etc. Information explosion has made it difficult for libraries to acquire all the required information resources, which are published. The change in information generation and transmission has made us to move from print to electronic in terms of acquiring information resources and to provide services. freeE-Journals Information Service (freeE-JIS) is a demonstration system, developed at NCSI as an extension for E-journal Information Service (E-JIS) provided by the Centre in IISc. The prototype freeE-JIS supports Co-operative E-journals Content Management System, where libraries willing to participate can share their knowledge of free E-journals, available on the Internet. The software for freeE-JIS was developed on Linux platform using Apache Web Server with MySQL database as the back end. With the additional features of login and session management, it can be a valuable service for a group of library or information centers. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/206 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: From the early 90’s, the pool of free scholarly electronic journals has increased considerably. Electronic Journals in Scholarly setting continue a tradition of creation and dissemination of knowledge that has begun long ago on Print Journals. The attitude and publishing habits of researchers have changed. Amidst the furore of serial price increase, the steady growth of scholarly journals freely available in electronic form is worth noticing. Most editors and publishers agree that the research findings should be made widely available to all, and the internet is capable of doing just that. This paper tends to look at some of the aspects of free scholarly journals, their availability, impact on the scientific community and resource links. Abstract: Since past few years free online information sources like e-journals, e-books, e-databases have increased considerably. The traditional library systems are going to transform into digital library systems and different projects like Gutenberg e-book project, Virginia Tech. Digital Library Project, University of California Digital Library project etc. have been undertaken. The author has started to compile the links of such freely available online information sources on the Internet at URL: http://www.geocities.com/ghosh_tbd and described the same in this paper. The paper also describes the impact on collection development, budget and technical processing etc. of the Library and Information centre. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/51 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Application of ICT in libraries has become inevitable in an era of information explosion and widespread use of digital information resources. Effective application of ICT in libraries helps in performing their operations and services most efficiently. The modernization of libraries and information centers enabled information transfer and access, meeting objectives and there by establishes a network of libraries and information centres. This initiative saw a major shift in resource development, resource sharing and their utilization at various levels. They subscribe to e-journals, CD-ROM databases, online databases, web-based resources, and a variety of other electronic resources. They participate in library consortia and build digital libraries. Abstract: Knowledge is widely recognized as a critical organizational resource irrespective of economic sector or type of organization. It is difficult if not possible to maximize the values of this resource without adequate understanding of how to leverage and share knowledge throughout the organization. Knowledge plays an important role in the overall development of intellectual capital of any organization. We are now shifting from information society to knowledge-based society, where we are not so much bothering about the visible or tangible information but deeply thinking about intangible information i.e. knowledge. In this knowledge-based society the main strategic resources are knowledge. And knowledge is the fuel, which is driving today the technology, economy, and the society itself. In this changing context there must have systematic way to capture, process, store and ultimately share knowledge for the development of an organization as well as society. Present Paper attempt to highlight the principles, efforts and barriers of knowledge sharing in Digital Environment URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1065 Files in this item: 1
