Abstract: This article aims to introduce LIS professionals to plagiarism, its types, some famous cases and the numerous library web sites devoted to this important issue. Plagiarism by students and researchers in academic and research institutions is an old but ever growing problem. The proliferation of paper mills, full text databases, and World Wide Web pages has made plagiarism a bigger problem in academia. The easy availability of electronic information through Internet creates a challenge for librarians, who must be well informed not only to detect and deter plagiarism, but also to educate their users about its ill effects. This article also enumerates reasons for increase in plagiarism cases, how to avoid plagiarism, do’s and don’ts of plagiarism, and finally prevention and punishment for plagiarism. Use of plagiarism detection tools can not only deter but also assist faculty to combat this form of academic dishonesty. In this article various anti-plagiarism tools have been enumerated and the advantages and disadvantages of using these automated texts matching software’s are discussed and analyzed in brief. The librarian’s role in informing masses about ill effect of plagiarism is also highlighted. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1068 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Information and communication technology is transforming the society, education, business and the economy. The Library managers must understand these changes in order to position their organizations to flourish in the networked environment to provide effective information services to the users. In the Local Area Network(LAN) world, an attempt has been made to describe the network establishment in Gulbarga University Library and their experiences to enhance the techno-based services to the users. Besides, network architecture with optical fiber, hardware and software requirements for the effective implementation of LAN in the library are explained in detail. Further explores steps taken to establish CD-ROM databases; Internet Lab in accessing electronic resources under UGC Infonet, status of DBMS, library web page and Institutional productivity. Future plan for establishment of Learning Resource Centre, Provision of video camera, retrospective bar coding of collections and touch screen in the library are highlighted. Abstract: Information superhighway is today thought of as a revolutionary platform intended to form a network connecting computers globally. The Digital Library System (DLS) is an information service in which all the information resources are available in computer processable form and the functions of acquisition, storage, preservation, retrieval, access and display are carried out through the use of digital technologies. It is not restricted to the provision of information in text format. In fact, audio and video resources are also to be represented digitally. A DLS can disseminate its information across a network and users can retrieve information in the same way. Scholarly and professionals interest in DLS has grown rapidly during 1990s. A typical DLS is a media server connected to high speed networks. This paper discusses the typical DLS, with its components and features. Abstract: Advancement in the information and communication technology (ICT) has taken us in to the ‘information age’ and has given rise to ‘digital economy’ and form a part of the infrastructure sector of the digital economy. The two most important tools of ICT responsible for these unprecedented changes are ‘computers’ and ‘internet’. We can very well imagine the magnitude of development and success if these are made available to common people. But making these tools available to common people is a Herculean task and this has given rise to the issue of ‘digital– divide’, i.e. “disparities/differences based on economic status, geographic location, between those who ‘have’ or ‘do not have’ access to information, internet and other information and communication technological services and those who ‘have’ or ‘do not have’ the skills, knowledge and abilities to use information, internet and other information and communication technologies”. Hence this study/research is an another step ahead to find out real nature and the extent of digital divide existing in India and to suggest ways and means to bridge the gap between those who ‘have’ and ‘have not’ access to information and communication tools and services. Abstract: Developments in Electronic Publishing and creation of Electronic Documents are facilitating in the establishment of Digital Libraries. Digital Libraries are being implemented by people who work not only within conventional libraries but also by people who do not consider themselves librarians or publishers. The World Wide Web has created new professions. Research in digital libraries has become a vibrant academic sub-discipline, with computer scientists working along with economists, sociologists, lawyers and librarians. This is an interdisciplinary body of expertise, which is emerging. The paper outlines the developments in the e-Publishing, e-Documentary sources, copyright and intellectual property rights and organization of these documents and the impact on the Library and Information Centers. Abstract: The academic libraries today are reorienting their collections and their collection development policies in the light of e-resources. Not only are the collections changing so are the role of librarians. The dual print and electronic environment are posing a challenge to the librarians. How best to balance the available budget between the two and in the process provide easy access to relevant information to the users without any delay, is the Mantra of Librarianship today. E-journals and e-books are here to stay. In the light of this fact how to provide access, which are the best source, how to index and catalogue them to provide quick access as well as training of the staff for their new role are the various issues that have been discussed in this article. But then each library needs to develop its own model for collection development keeping in mind its users and their specific requirements. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1435 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The paper reports the results of a survey conducted to know the collection of e-resources in Karnataka state university libraries. Attempts have been made to know the Internet facilities, procurement of CD-ROM databases and online resources, participation in consortium activities and e-resources accessible through such consortium activities in the university libraries. The paper traces the barriers in collection of e-resources in the university libraries. The university libraries under the study have insufficient number of Internet nodes, low bandwidth, poor collection of CDROM databases and online resources. The scholarly literature accessible under the UGC-Infonet E-Journal Consortium is the only strength of these university libraries, as far as collection of eresources is concerned.] URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1064 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Research is an important activity for the development of scientific and technical knowledge. It is the gateway to the development of theoretical knowledge, practical skills and technical know how in any discipline. Universities are the centers of higher education and research. The libraries attached to the Universities have to deal with the needs of the researchers in various disciplines. It is the responsibility of the University libraries to provide the information requirements of the researchers from time to time. In this paper, the authors have made an attempt to know the attitudes of the research scholars towards electronic resources in the Universities in Karnataka. Survey method using questionnaire as the tool is employed to collect data. The collected data are analysed and interpretation is drawn. Suggestions and findings are presented at the end. Abstract: Knowledge management is the powerful tool for any organizational competitiveness. Knowledge is the heart of the organization. KM enhances productivity, effectiveness and efficiency in the aspect of operations and services. Knowledge is explicit and implicit in nature. This paper deals with knowledge explosion or generation, process and management for effective use of knowledge to end –users. With the introduction of ICT, knowledge has become more dynamic which instantly changes its direction and dimensions. As Library is the heart of any organization, with the introduction of ICT and Digital library concepts, libraries have moved from depository or warehouse to Knowledge centers, which preserve, classify and disseminate knowledge from creator to knowledge seeking community irrespective of location and distance. Abstract: Cryptography has widely been used as a means of information security in today’s electronic world. In addition to e-commerce, e-mail and other applications over the Internet, it has been used in common household items as well. The increased reliance on cryptographic methods has raised several ethical questions of global concern that are closely related to fundamental human rights. Some view it as a boon, as an escape from the oppressive hands of the state while others see it as a way of making the information - poor have to pay for every information and denial of access to essential information. In this paper an attempt has been made to separate out the concepts appropriate to each interpretation. Digital libraries also face quite many ethical problems concerning cryptography that even stand against the principles of a public library system. The problems are related to inequality of access, intellectual property and copyright issues. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/212 Files in this item: 1
