Abstract: This paper describes the development of a catalogue of a digitized collection of costumes. By evaluating and analyzing the collection and evaluate how well existing metadata formats can be applied to a costume collection. The desired metadata elements shown here, selected from the existing Metadata elements and try to fit the Costume data into it. Further it can be researched by taking selected samples and actual metadata treatments to be created for these selected samples using (1) American Cataloguing Rules (AACR in) use with USMARC formats (2) the Dublin Core set of Elements , and (3) the Visual Resources Association (VRA) Core Categories for Visual Resources. Comparison and analysis of the formats will be resulted in the selection with additional metadata elements, if require. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/347 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Free and equal information is the catch of the day, emphasis is laid today on promoting information access through different medium to provide to right user at the right time. While the information revolution has placed enormous pressure on libraries as they try to find their way across the dramatic technological revolution. Information at present is the source of production, transmission and consumption in the electronic age; and is considered to be the back bone in the digital repositories. Every digital collection is based on e-learning, which provide free access to all. In democratic world uneven access has led to a growing concern about the rise of a digital divide between information “ haves” and “have nots” based on race, income, family structure, education and other factors. Abstract: DLIST is the Digital Library of Information Science and Technology, a repository of electronic resources in the domains of Library and Information Science (LIS) and Information Technology (IT). Initial collection development scope is in Information Literacy and Informetrics. Academics, researchers, and practitioners create a wealth of content that includes published papers, instructional materials, tutorials for software and databases, bibliographies, pathfinders, bibliometric datasets, dissertations and reports. DLIST aims to capture this wealth of information in a library that is openly available for re-use and flobal dissemination. Open deposit processes where authors retain copyright and facilities for full-text storage in a variety of formats are used. A demonstration of DLIST along with the steps to register, deposit, and use materials is a part of the oral presentation at CALIBER 2003, Ahmedabad, India. UK and US experiences in building institutional repositories and strategies for international consortia building for resource sharing using DLIST are also outlined. Abstract: In present scenario publishers of freely available electronic journals have the potential for positively transforming the highly problematic economics of scholarly publishing. But actual use of electronic scholarly publications shows that they present serious utilization barriers to would-be readers. Practical awareness, indexing, and archiving in this new literature can overcome these barriers and is essential if such promising publications are to transform scholarly communication. DLIST (Digital Library for Information Science and Technology) can meet these needs by integrating electronic publications into existing information systems. Thus disintermediation of the scholarly publishing process will help the clientele of the low budget library in all respects. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1521 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The transformation of a scanned paper document into an editable form suitable for further processing such as desktop publishing or archiving in a digital library is a complex process. It requires solutions to several problems – document analysis by acquiring knowledge of document layout by a Page Layout Analyzer (PLA), followed by document recognition, which mainly comprises text recognition by Optical Character Recognition (OCR). Besides these two, another important problem is document reconstruction by transforming content into an electronically editable format by keeping the original layout intact. Core OCR modules exist on different Indian scripts, but no such document reconstruction system is available for Indian scripts. The document reconstruction system reported in this paper is the first of its kind on Indian scripts and it addresses document reconstruction for Bengali document images. The system makes use of the knowledge of both document layout extracted by a PLA in a graphical user interface (GUI) and the results of text recognition steps performed by OCR for transformation of paper documents into Rich Text Format. Abstract: Electronic Information is the logical extension of the development in technology and the positive response to the growing need of the users for easy access of information and rights holders can gain better access to large amounts of rights data, and today most use that electronic tool. In order to manage the electronic information some effective tools like, Electronic Information Management (EIM), must be incorporated. In the simplest definition, EIM means using office technology systematically to help you store, retrieve, and safeguard your organization’s information. Most people think immediately of reducing paper, but as we rely more and more on technology to create digital information - software files, digital photographs, and Email, EIM takes on a broader scope. With current technology it’s possible to manage a complete “library” of information with centralized security, backups and control, different levels of retrieval and access, and archival storage. Digital Right Management offers a better way to manage the records you rely on. Whether documents are stored in an original electronic file format or scanned from paper, managing their storage, access and retention becomes easier with technology. Abstract: Digital and virtual reference services have (DVRS) have been there in libraries in the developed world for more than a quarter century now. There have been a few experiments in India with regard to provision of DVRS, and education and training for DVRS for a few years. This paper explores the need for a collaborative effort by academic libraries in India for digital and virtual reference services, and briefly describes SandarbhSoochna: a DVRS training initiative at PunjabiUniversity. Such efforts are a sine qua non for developing qualified and tr ained manpower that would transform the L&I services scene by managing knowledge and information resources effectively in a global electronic village. Trained manpower is the most crucial resource to act as catalyst for knowledge discovery and management from diverse sources. The paper also proposes that collaborative DVRS, especially among academic libraries in India is needed to develop and manage knowledge and information resources effectively to satisfy the five laws of library science and to meet the increasing demands of users’ in a global electronic village. Abstract: The present paper endeavours to focus on the current structure of Library as a dynamic organization that transcended from the earlier unit culture to the present global culture. This transitional transformation is attributed to the splendid changes being brought about by the information and communication technology to the domain of the information management and dissemination. Further, the true culture of libraries as a social and participatory place has been buttressed in the electronic environment by the developments in the web technologies and tools. The paper in an attempt to showcase the application of web 2.0 tools as add-on technology for rendering participatory knowledge services by the libraries, focuses on some of these tools with special reference to virtual reference services. While concluding it is pointed out that the profession in general, claims a long history of effectively recognizing user’s needs and then applying that user knowledge towards service delivery schema which completely address those needs.
