Abstract: The present paper discusses the importance of manuscript collection and the necessity to preserve it for the future research and references. It highlights on the existing precious manuscript collection of Jayakar library. The paper tries to convert document in the digital form to preserve and maintain it. More emphasis is given on conversion of Marathi manuscripts available in the Jayakar library. It also discusses various methods of capturing data and its advantages and disadvantages. The central theme of the paper is to find out, how much space is required to store one image in various file formats likebitmap, tif and jpeg, which may act as a guideline for preservation and maintenance of manuscripts. Abstract: This article gives an introduction about the digitisation of the MICA Library. It explains about the various bibliographical databases created by MICA library for its users using WINISIS Software. Images of the member’s photographs and print ads are also covered with circulation and print ad databases. The library does the complete digitisation of the full text dissertation on CD-ROM. MICA Rural Market Ratings (MRMR) and MICA Urban Market Ratings (MUMR) are CD products based on secondary sources and digitised maps. The article also explains about the online MICA E-mail service. Abstract: Digitization is an electronic process of converging information from a print format to a digital format. Digital libraries are electronic libraries in which number of geographically distributed users can access the contents of large and diverse repositories of electronic objects. If the future libraries are to survive, they have to be switched over to electronic mode because the information is fast changing and mostly resources are born digitally. The mission is to create a Universal Library which will foster creativity and free access to all human knowledge. Abstract: The age of digital technology has revolutionised communications. It is used and enjoyed by all strata of society for business, education, research, and entertainment. Digitisation of information is of particular relevance to business. Organizations must learn how to use information effectively, as competition will keep increasing and profit margins will be under pressure. Information should be stored in a manner that the retrieval is quick and storage safe and permanent. Paper records, books, journals and reports are not very handy as compared to CD-ROMs when it comes to looking for a particular piece of information. It may take, some times, weeks to compile the results, using traditional records. So, we are looking at digitisation as a solution for the coming years. The digital collections must include genre of library materials such as text (books, serials, dissertations/theses), numeric database (statistical/scientific) and special collections (image, audio, video, manuscript etc.). Abstract: Digital resources are a comparatively new category of information materials in Indian libraries.Although in many ways managing digital resources is similar to handling other resources, thereare significant differences. One major difference lies in the fact that libraries are also increasingly getting involved in the very creation of digital resources.Digital resources can broadly be grouped into two categories – those that are originally created and distributed in digital format and those that are originally created in another format and are later converted into a digital format through a process generally referred to as digitization. Several organizations – libraries, governments, research institutions, and commercial organizations - at local, regional, national and international levels are involved on digitization activities. This paper begins with an understanding of digitization - the meaning and the processes – and then seeks to look at the issues involved in the digitization process from the perspective of libraries. Abstract: Manuscripts provide rich, authentic information, facts and evidence for historical, legal and research references. Physical condition of the manuscripts may be decayed due to factors such as climate, insects, acidified paper and old age. A core function of libraries is to maintain and preserve the decaying/ damaged manuscripts for the present as well as use of the future generation. The most significant development in the recent times is to digitize the fragile and rare documents for better access, storage, preservation and dissemination. Digitization is an important aspect of developing digital libraries as it opens up new avenues of access, use, research and preservation of valued information resources. This paper deals with the key issues of digitization at the Gandhi Smriti Library of LBSNAA, which have started digitizing its rare collection with the aim of providing the cost-effective technical solutions for efficient development and delivery of digital services to provide enhanced access to the Library’s collections and other documentary resources, and also to provide shared access to digital collections in cooperation with other institutions. Further, it strives to provide the infrastructure for long-term management of digital material in the Library’s collection through provision of hardware and software systems supporting integrated collection management in a digital environment. Abstract: Developing preservation strategies for photographic materials require specific expertise on storage, environment, package materials and conservation treatments. Many digitization projects for photographs grew out of project primarily dealing with text. Digitization of photographs:- Obviously digitization is considered to be very attractive by institutions that hold photographic collections. When digital copies are available, users can browse through a collection without handling fragile materials. Creating an adequate digital representation of a (historical) photograph requires expert knowledge of imaging techniques as well as photographic processes. The present paper describes in detail the methods and procedures adopted by The ‘Collage’-project, The Public Record Office Library, Victoria and Albert Museum (UK), The British Library (UK) and Stadt- und Universitätsbibliothek Frankfurt for conservation of their photographic collection.
