Abstract: The digital library presents an opportunity for the traditional library and the librarian. Libraries and librarians have significant expertise to offer the creators of digital libraries, for example, skills in organising information.Traditional libraries will not be replaced by digital libraries, certainly not in the near future, and probably never. The reality will be hybrid libraries, with librarians needing to be able to operate in two environments: the first, physical libraries and physical collections; and the second, digital information resources. The goal will be to satisfy the information needs of the user community, regardless of whether the information needed is available in digital form or physical formats. Abstract: This paper explains what a digital library is and how it is designed to support access to digital contents and services. In a broad sense a digital library is simply an on-line system providing access to a wide variety of contents and services. Contents include virtually any kind of electronic material such as various kinds of electronic media (text, images, video, etc.), licensed databases of journals, articles and abstracts and description of physical collections. Digital Libraries offer different types of reference and referral services, instructional services, added value services and promotional services. The procedure of these services is varied but typically serves the same purpose as traditional library services. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1368 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Our information and knowledge environment has been and continues to be changed by the development of the Internet and ubiquitous communication technologies. Information and knowledge are replacing capital and energy as the primary wealth-creating assets, just as the latter two replaced land and labor many years ago. In addition, technological developments in the 20th century have transformed the majority of wealth-creating work from physically-based to “knowledge-based.” Technology and knowledge are now the key factors in development of economy of the country. With increased mobility of information and the global work force, knowledge and expertise can be transported instantaneously around the world. We are now an information society in a knowledge economy where knowledge management is essential. The paper presents an overview of the role of digital libraries in the knowledge economy, its prospects and issues. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1534 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The Internet and web are growing and accelerating the problem of information explosion globally. Internet based resources and services are very valuable particularly for developing countries including India since the printed sources of information are not easily available in time from developed countries. Internet services are being used effectively for library applications for retrieving information from remote data bases and have been the basis of advent of the digital library. India, having more than 180 Universities and 6000 colleges mainly depends on resources available in their own libraries but such isolated libraries can be made to digital library resource for providing better and quick services. The digital libraries are superior over classical libraries in many respects and rank to levels like Stand-alone Digital Library (SDL), Federated Digital Library (FDL) and Harvested Digital Library (HDL). A HDL can be charged by the expert to enhance its content. The digital libraries can be converted into Search Engines also but need a huge organizational effort, and shall become more useful for a one time shot for quickly needed information. Several digital libraries and their web sites are available on Internet related to standard libraries and different subjects for the users. A number of national digital library networks in India are in operation/implementation stage and institution are being encouraged for their transformation into digital libraries and become part of the digital network for speedy exchange of information. Development of digital libraries and their exploration through LAN, WAN and Internet is likely to benefit millions of users surfing the net in quest of information. * System Manager, C.S.J.M. Abstract: In many developing countries there has always been a problem in acquiring and storing printed materials because delivery was expensive and storage difficult in a humid climate. In the digital era these problems are solvable and avoidable. However do not imagine that you can throw away all the bibliographical standards that a physical library needs. Digital libraries need a good index and need quality catalogue records and good classification to supplement full text indexing which on its own can make retrieval of relevant materials difficult. Standards like MARC and classification schemes are indispensible as are standards necessary to create the information retrieval structure. Additionally librarians must work together in teams and provide good information literacy training. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1594 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: A library may procure contents in various sources and forms to service their clients. In the predominantly paper based erstwhile environment all these contents were put to similar types of use, and copyright restrictions were imposed based on the quantum of pages copied etc. In the electronic and digital perspective, owners of information are resorting to punitive measures regarding the use and contents in digital form. Some of the constraints faced by our libraries to engage in serious digital initiatives are three fold-that of money, manpower and contents. Most of our libraries, particularly in the higher education and research institutes solely depend on the information providers and publishers in the developed world to satisfy their urge for vital contents that inspire indigenous research. Since contents are a major ingredient in digital library development, the pragmatic and viable way out for libraries is to judiciously judge them as available in electronic forms in optical media or on Web and procure at least some of them for hosting locally. This paper presents some of the major issues involved in such a critical activity with some illustrative examples available like IEE/IEEE Electronic Library, Indian Standards on CD-ROM, Science Direct and Web access of Indian Academy of Sciences journals. The justification for selecting external contents has also been mentioned. A detailed checklist for evaluating contents is presented from various angles, like authenticity of content, user interface, search and display capabilities, documentation and technical support, and Media dependent features.
