Abstract: Internet is one of the valuable and probably most used information resources for the present days. There is hardly any topic on which information is not available on Internet. But the problem with it is automated indexing and poor recall and precision of retrieval. Tough in some cases, search formation are not formulated properly, still the performance of Internet or website is not satisfactory. Here, an approach of building subject base Internet resources is discussed under the heading of subject gateway. It may be a better tool for retrieving subject information in comparison of popular search engines. Different sides of ‘subject gateways’ are discussed to manage the growing web resources. In conclusion the role of information professionals in this regard is discussed. Description: This is only an Abstract URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/398 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: As -and when the number of resources grows, complexity in organizing the static pages will also grow and it becomes very unfriendly to the end-users. In this situation one may have to think about database driven WebPages that would help the end users to interact with the stored information to retrieve the required information. The web databases have become very popular in the Internet world for organizing the Information resources. Library and Information centers can effectively utilize this web technoiogy for improving as well as delivering new services. This paper discusses the tools and the techniques of the 'Database Web' connectivity in brief. Description: This is only a Abstracts URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/447 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The Central Library at IIT Kharagpur is continuously exploring new IT tools and techniques for better information organization and services. The entire collection details (OPAC) are computerized and can be accessed from the Campus LANIERNET WANl Internet IWWW. The OPAC menu also keeps the Institute users informed about other details like campus academic activities, continuing education programmes and the staff directory. Now since these details are being accessed through the library website (cental library link of http://www.iitkgp.ernet.in) any person through a computer connected to the internet can access them. Besides OPAC, a CD-ROM network facilitating access to the earlier stand alone databases subscribed in the Electronic Library, is commissioned and this facility developed with distributed access in mind could also be accessed by any Internet machine, subject to high bandwidth connectivity and shared access arrangements/ copyright restrictions. The basic steps of designing web server for library applications and connectivity aspects of internet will be stressed upon. The paper will summarise the local developments and suggest an illustrative account for Indian libraries to migrate from computerised to Internet services and to emerge as workable digital libraries in the long run. Abstract: In early days people were communicating orally with one another, offering their perspectives on the world and sharing their passions. By lowering the barriers to publishing, the web can make those communications, whether representing individuals or their organizations, more powerful than ever before, but that require the right tools, metaphors and platforms. Through a gradual process of evolution and technology development, the communications has finally found a native online form through which to express themselves: a new form of web site called the weblog. Abstract: Agharkar Research Institute, Pune is a grant-in-aid research institute of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The current research activities encompass biological sciences and focus on three broad areas: Animal Sciences, Microbial Sciences and Plant Sciences. The web site www.aripune.org has been launched to present the scientific activities and achievements of the institute. Information about ARI library is one of the important features of the web site. The present paper attempts to discuss the planning and strategies adopted for the implementation of WEB OPAC activities of the library. The discussion is based on actual experience gained during this process. We advocate that it is not necessary to provide access to all the data or information through Internet. However, it is always better to keep separate the locally and globally accessible information. We further discuss the issue of WEB OPAC of reprints of papers published by the scientists of our institute. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/225 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The paper discusses the role of libraries in the Semantic Web. It provides a brief introduction to the Semantic Web and its technologies, including Resource Description Framework, and their relevance to library metadata. It describes the evolution of library expertise in developing metadata schemas and creating structured metadata, and the resulting quantities of rich, high-quality metadata records that might provide critical mass to the development and utility of the Semantic Web. The paper outlines modern analyses of user tasks and requirements for knowledge discovery, including International Standard Bibliographic Description, Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records, and RDA: resource description and access, and how the associated models and rules are being made available to the Semantic Web. Examples of current initiatives to make legacy metadata available are given, and the work of the W3 Library Linked Data Incubator group described. The paper then discusses the potential impact of the Semantic Web on library metadata management, as the focus changes from record to individual statement, and the beneficial impact on users of Web and library service. Abstract: Web scale discovery services for the library environment have the capacity to more easily connect researchers with the library’s vast information repository. This includes locally held and hosted content, such as physical holdings, digital collections, and local institutional repositories. Perhaps more significantly, web scale discovery also accesses a huge array of remotely hosted content, often purchased or licensed by the library, such as publisher and aggregator content for tens of thousands of full-text journals, additional content from abstracting and indexing resources, and content from open access repositories. This paper defines web scale discovery and highlights importance of discovery tools being used by the libraries. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1665 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: Information is available in many different forms. Search Engines are very useful tools to find out information available on the net. The competition among Internet search engines is intense, and that’s good news for net users. But despite each search service’s attempt to become the ultimate online find-it tool, no single service can cater for every need. Library and Information professional use this type of tools and get better result from the site, use popular search engines. Internet is a wide network many type of information can get it. In this paper the Authors suggest that the resources are available in the net somehow know web address of the site without any information of the site find the information. For better use of this one should use the search engine. Search engines have a variety of ways to refine and control your searches. Some of them offer menu systems for this. Others require you to use special commands as part of the query. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/425 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: “A library is a place where the right information is provided at right time, at right place and in a right personal way” by Dr. Ranganathan still holds true with the coming of new technology. The resources are shifting from print to electronic forms and the horizons of information age have expanded considerably than ever before, thanks to Internet and World wide web making the whole world a global village, thereby leading to such huge information maze which is beyond imagination. But, in order to make effective use of this mine of information, it becomes equally important to understand it and devise tools and techniques to utilize it effectively. Besides the analytical skills to identify the needs of users, knowledge of search tools has started becoming a speciality. Where search engines, subject’s guides and meta search engines help identify and locate the information, search logic helps to conceptualize the queries. However, the librarians who are excited to use wonderful web resources are digging out and mastering techniques to understand it’s behavior keeping in mind the fact that the value of a resource, and its ability to satisfy the information requirements, will vary for different audiences. However, as the Internet resources are dynamic and keep on changing, so resource evaluation has becomes more difficult than ever before leading to non-credibility of the results. This magnificent tool for librarians and informational professionals if properly understood and utilized can drastically change the frame of the today’s libraries and librarians building new relationships with the users, satisfying their information needs in a way they could never have anticipated. Abstract: The Web services framework intends to provide a standards-based realization of the serviceoriented architecture (SOA) over Internet, which has emerged in response to a fundamental shift from program-to-consumer (B2C) to program-to-program (B2B) interactions. Fully Interconnected enterprises are being replaced by business networks in which each participant provides the others with specialized services. This new service architecture defines a set of requirements that distinguish SOA from other services architecture. Security and Web services are consistently reported among the top technologies of interest to business. Concerns about the security technology are major deterrent to companies considering use of the technology. This paper attempts to explain the new Web Services security and mentions the main initiatives and their respective specifications. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1569 Files in this item: 1
