Abstract: We are living in the information age. Information is the basic requirement for every human activity and it is important as food, air and water. Information in itself has no value, but its value lies in its communication and use. Information Literacy is the key competency for the Information age. Every person has a fundamental right to information literacy and information access. It is a necessity for all students, staff and faculty to be accomplished information users. Information literacy is key characteristics of life long learning and an essential element of higher education. Promoting information literacy skills at all levels of education is the collective responsibility of teachers, librarians and administrators. The paper discussed the concept of information literary and the role of LIS professionals in promoting electronic information literacy in Digital Libraries. Abstract: Meta search engines are powerful tools that search multiple search engines simultaneously. Unlike crawler-based search engines such as Google, AllTheWeb, AltaVista and others, meta search engines generally do not build and maintain their own web indexes. Instead, they use the indexes built by others, aggregating and often postprocessing results in unique ways. Meta search engines accept your query, and send it out to multiple search engines in parallel. They are often quite fast, using private “backdoor” servers made available by the search engines they query. They get this privileged status thanks to revenue sharing agreements. There are several advantages to using meta search engines, though they’re not always the most appropriate tool. The most obvious advantage is that you can get results from multiple search engines without having to visit each in turn. Apart from the time savings, there is some evidence that this gives your search a broader scope, since each individual search engine’s index differs from all others. Present paper attempts to highlights the role of meta search engine in web- based information retrieval URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1327 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: The key concepts open access, open source and open standards are playing a great role today when we talk about borderless libraries. Immense benefits and importance to libraries are being examined. Greater benefits include lowering of cost, greater accessibility and better prospects especially for long term preservation of scholarly works. The paper mainly discuses on the importance and utility of the three concepts i.e. open access, open source and open standards in libraries emerging, which has helped to widened the gap in resource sharing, making it accessible in a far better way, limiting the expenses and above all standardizing which helps different systems to share their resources. Abstract: Humans are telling stories since ancient times. What is new is the purposeful use of narrative to achieve a practical outcome. Storytelling will become a key ingredient in managing communications, education, training, innovation and sharing knowledge in the digital learning environment. Storytelling is the act of telling a story in an entertaining, impressive or dramatic way. Adding feeling or emotion is probably very important in story-telling. How do we do it? Generally we remember the feeling of the event or imagine what our characters might be feeling and then adjust our ‘delivery’ accordingly. While focusing on the concept of learning style, learning methods, learning tools in knowledge management system, this article discusses the features of storytelling and how the software facilitate the telling of a story URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/549 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: There is an enormous range of available information in the world. In electronic environment many libraries have created a presence on the Web, but have we really thought about why we want to be there? Should library Web sites be grounded in the past or look forward to the future, or both? This paper has tried to focus on various issues related to the object and importance of the library homepage, how to create, what is requirement etc for library homepage. The role of the library is to select, acquire, organize and make available an appropriate subset of this information. Proving electronic information to its users has become a common feature of many special libraries through their homepages. A case study of IUCAA library’s homepage is presented. It discusses how IUCAA Library has taken challenges of the new emerging technologies and increasing demands of its users by adopting electronic information sources and services and how it generates value added electronic information for its users. Abstract: Information sources are growing enormously and the biggest access point of information today is the Internet. Search engines are the most popular information retrieval tools in the web today. Bur they retrieve more junk than pinpointed information. Can thesaurus be used in improving the quality of information retrieval, in this context ? Most of us are familiar with the concept of traditional thesaurus or dictionary of synonyms. But online thesaurus still remains a concept familiar to librarians, expert searchers and high-end system developers only. This paper tries to discuss the role of thesaurus in improving the quality of modern information retrieval. Abstract: Today’s real border are not between nations, but between powerful and powerless, free and fettered, privileged and humiliated(Kofi Annan, 2001). The humiliated, fettered and powerless, in this context are the rural population, mainly because they are remote, they lack information. With small and widely – dispersed population, rural areas, constantly face deteriorating services. They often face difficulty in obtaining even the essential services, being forced to travel, despite the fact that there is an abundance or saturation of goods and services in their neighbouring urban areas. Many of the services, essential for everyday life are available only in the urban areas. This paper describes the ways in which universities can bridge the digital divide. Abstract: Advances in Information Communication Technology (ICT) has created immense methods for creating, storing, maintaining, accessing and preserving the traditional printed documents in digital form. The different publishers have taken the full advantage of publishing the research outputs of the academicians and deprive the institutions and the community of the institution from the research outputs. This paper explores the importance of Institutional Repository (IR) and the role of the Open Source Software (OSS) in building the Institutional Repository of any institution. To publish and serve the community of an institution building institutional repositories is the most feasible solution. We have to take the help of some special software packages to build up an institutional repository and the role of open source software in this regard is very important. The institutions which are economically not strong enough can take the advantage of using open source software to build up their own institutional repository and can expose their knowledge stock to the world. Abstract: Web 2.0 technologies provide opportunities in various ways to add value to e-services to the world. This term Web 2.0 is widely used to cover a lot of different things especially online on the Internet. These push technologies open new challenges for Library applications too. These powerful e-services reflecting the 2.0 movement integrate dissimilar data to make it more focused for user needs, integrate data within specific user tasks, facilitate collaboration and team use of information, and allow creation of new information and value by users online. However, RSS is one of the easiest and most seamless ways to connect and be informed. RSS (Rich Site Summary or Really Simple Syndication) is basically a format to deliver updated Web content. This paper describes the implementation of RSS 2.0 feed into an online information Gateway in a local Intranet environment thoroughly. Implementation of RSS feed provides news and information merely not static but also with a click. This paper highlights the features and technologies being used for implementation in a closed intranet environment. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1052 Files in this item: 1

Abstract: RSS is a Web 2.0 technology that is being used by millions of web users around the world to keep track of their favourite websites. In the ‘old days’ of the web to keep track of updates on a website visitors had to ‘bookmark’ websites in their browser and manually return to them on a regular basis to see what had been added. RSS has become a valuable technology for everything from casual web users to webmasters. According to a recent Yahoo survey only 12% of internet users are aware of RSS and a mere 4% have knowingly used RSS. The paper discusses about the different aspects of RSS such as meaning of RSS, evolution of RSS, how to create RSS and how to get / read RSS Feeds including basics of XML, which is the basic language for writing programs for RSS Feeds. At the end of this paper, details of the project about the INFLIBNET’s RSS Reader is also discussed. URI: http://hdl.handle.net/1944/1168 Files in this item: 1
